Description

G. P. SWE EZY.
Lifting-lacks.
Patened New 26, i872.
, @www UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE P. SWEEZY, OF RIVER HEAD, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN L-IFTING-JACKS.
' Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,499, dated November 26, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. SwEEzY, of River Head, county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting Jack, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention relates to the construction of a lifting-jack; and consists in making it from a single-board or plank, the block being cut from the body and adapted to work up and down in the space from which it is cut.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation with lever and cross-piecesbroken away. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view taken on line a represents an ordinary piece of plank of -A any suitable thickness and width, and which is provided with the ground sill b, so as to give it greater width at the bottom, and enable it to stand in an upright position. Out out of the top of this body a is the block c, having a number of steps cut upon its top for the purpose of adapting the jack to vehicles of dii-ferent heights. This block ts in the space from which it was cut, and is held in place by the side bars d and the projection e made in the body, which catches over a shoulder, f,
made on the block. Pivoted to the body a is the operating-lever h, which is provided with a small friction-roller, i', for a bearing which comes just under the center of the block, so that in moving the block up and down there will be no friction upon the sides. This lever may be made to operate by hand, or by making the lower end of the block extend down further, a shorter one, to lbe worked by the foot, may be used.
By this simple construction I am enabled to make a complete and effective jack from an ordinary piece yof plank or board, which is suitable for all ordinary purposes, and which can be furnished at a much lower price than those now in general use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The body a, block c, and lever h, provided with a friction-roller, when all are constructed and combined to operate as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I hereunto affix my signature this 20th day of November, 1872.
GEORGE P. SWEEZY.
