Another feature of my invention is the` viding a, frictional resistance to returnV movement of the primary sliding platewhich resistance may be' at a maximum when the door is wide open and decrease as it closes, thus forming a check tothe return movement of the primary slidingz plate.

As the primary sliding plate is moved along the casing 1 one end 12 of each bell crank lever ,l0 slides along a channel 13 formed between the -end of the casing 1 and thecam like projection 14 upon the bottom of the casing, iny Contact with the end of the casing 1 and the other end 15 of each bell crank lever 10 Y is in sliding contact with the one end 16 of the secondary sliding plate 17. This end 16 of the secondary sliding plate 17 is specially shaped as shown in sucha way'that a pair of compression springs 18, 18 which act upon the secondary sliding plate 17, add to the spring pressure upon the primary sliding 'plate 6 just at the beginning of the motion ofthe hinge spindle 2. The end 16 of the ,secondaryl sliding plate 17 and the faces of the bell crank levers 10 are however, so shaped that the primary sliding plate 6 is relieved of its additional spring pressure to a great extent after the first few degrees of angular V'movement of the Yhinge spindle 2. This relief is effected by'means of the bell crank levers 10 which are pivoted at 11 to the primary sliding plate6, these levers 10 acting in the manner of struts betweenthe end of the casing 1 and the end 16 oi the secondarysliding plate 17, which also has the closing movement. VThe end of the secondary sliding plate 17 remote fromthe cam has two upturned projections'20. Theseprojections are engaged effect of retarding or checking a too rapid -by shoulders19 upon the end of the primary l ondary sliding plate.

The primary sliding plate 6 may have attached to it a hydraulic, pneumatic, or dash pot device such as 23 to assist checking the return movement of the swing door. This device may be of any usual construction comprising a plunger working in a cylinder. The plunger may be held stationary by a pin 24 attached to the casing 1 of the apparatus, while the cylinder 25 is attached to the primary sliding plate.
The hinge spindle 2 is provided with an arm 26 either made integral therewith or fixed upon a taper square27 or in any other 1 manner. This arm 26 is provided with two tapped holes 27 at its free end. The under side 'of the door 9 is recessed at 28 to fit over this arm 26 and metal plates 29 are provided upon the door through which, at each side, are screws iO-which enter the tapped holes 27 in the arm 26 upon the hinge spindle 2. By tightening one and slackening the other screw 30 the door can be accurately centered upon the hinge and its angular position thereon adjusted.
Fig. 6 illustrates one of the metal plates 29 and the holes 31 through which the adjusting screws pass to the arm 26, while Fig. 7 illustrates the arm 26 made integral with the hinge spindle 2.
The holes in the metal plates 29 upon the door may take the :t'orm ot slots 31 extending to the edges of the plates 29 to facilitate removal of the door 9. Screws having a spherical or convex shoulder under the head may be employed and those parts of the plates with which these shoulders come into contact may be correspondingly shaped so as to allow a small angular adjustment of the screws. This arrangement enables a. standard size of itment to be applied to doors of varying widths and dispenses with the use of a shoe beneath the door.
Screws may also be employed having an annular groove or recess under thc head into which fit corresponding lugs on the metal plates 29 for the purpose of preventing any tendency the screws may have of becoming detached through the swinging of the doors.
In operation assuming that the door 9 in the closed position. all three compression springs 8` 18, 18 will be acting to keep it in this position. When the door is moved, tor the first few degrees of movement it is necessary to compress all three of the compression springs. Then the door has been moved a tew degrees, a further movement necessitates the continued compression of' the primary sliding plate spring 8 but only very slight further compression of the Secondary sliding plate springs 18. At this point the bell crank levers 10 which are pivoted at 11 to the primary sliding plate 6 begin to act as struts, in the manner hereinlbefore described, so that ifthe door 9` isinow released itwill return toits originaliposition` under the influence of thespring pressure from the primary sliding plate only, and
this movement will be checked by the triction oil the bell crank levers 10 and by the dash pot or like device 23 if same is pro-- simple strut between the endof the primary sliding plate 6 and the casing l and the door S) will consequently remain open until the cam `is moved from this position. When the cam -l is acting as a strut the pressure from the plate (i may be `transmitted to the casing l through the hinge spindle bearings 3, or one end of the cam 4l may make contact with the end ot' the casing.

A spring hinge tor swing doors comprising a hinge spindle having means for securing a door thereto, a cam arranged in operative connection with said spindle, a primary spring pressed sliding plate having one end shaped to coperate with said cam, a secondary spring pressed sliding plate mounted in lost motion relation to said primary sliding plate, whereby said secondary sliding plate exerts additional pressure `upon theprimary sliding plate at certain angular positions of the hinge spindle, and guides prising a casing containing a hinge spindleV having means for securing a. door thereto, a tain arranged 1n operative connection with y said spindle, a primary spring pressed sliding plate having one end shaped to coperate with said cam, a secondary spring pressed sliding plate mounted in lost motion relation to said primary sliding` plate, whereby said secondary sliding plate exerts additional pressure upon the primary sliding plate at certain angular positions of the hinge spindle, a pair of levers pivoted tothe primary sliding plate, each having one end bearing on the end of the casing and its other end bearing on the end of the secondary sliding plate, said levers acting as struts between the secondary sliding plate and the casing and also providing a frictional resistance to return movement ot the primary sliding plate, and guides for said sliding plates.

A spring hinge for swing doors comprising a casing containing a hinge spindle having means for securing a door thereto, a cam arranged in operative connection with said spindle, a primary spring pressed slid ing plate having one end shaped to coperate with said cam, said end being recessed to partially inclose the cam so as to provide surfaces upon which the cam can Oper-4 `plate yat certain angular positions of the hingespindle, a pair of levers pivoted to the -primary sliding plate, each having one end bearing on the end of the casing and its other end bearing on the end of the secondary sliding plate, said levers acting as struts between the secondary sliding plate and thecasing and also Vproviding a frictionalresistance to return movement of the primary sliding plate, and guides for said sliding plates.

H primary spring pressed sliding plate having one end shaped to coperate with said cam, said end being recessed to partially inclose the cam so as to provide surfaces upon which the @am can. operate during movement of the plate in either direction and so avoid lost motion between the cam and the plate, a fluid pressure device associated with said primary sliding plate to assist in checking the return swing,'a secondary spring pressed sliding plate. mounted in lost motion relation to said primary sliding plate, whereby said secondary sliding plate exerts additional pressure upon the primary sliding plate at certain angular positions of the hinge spindle, and guides for said sliding plates.
8. A spring hinge for swing doors comprising a casing containing a hinge spindle havingmeans for securing a door thereto, a cam arranged in operative connection with Y said spindle, a primary spring-pressed sliding plate having one end shaped to coperate with said cam, said end being recessed to partially inclose the cam so as to provide surfaces upon which the cam can operate during movement of the plate in either direction and so avoid lost motion between the cam and the plate, a fluid pressure device associated with said primary sliding plate to assist in checking the return swing, a secondary spring pressed sliding plate mounted in lost motion relation to said primary sliding plate, whereby said seeondaiy sliding plate exerts additional pressure upon the primary sliding plate at cci'- tain'angular positions of the hinge spindle, a pair of levers pivoted to the primary sliding plate, each having one end bearing on the endl of the casing and its other end bearing on the end of the secondary sliding plate, said levers acting as struts between the secondary sliding plate and the casing and also providing a frictional resistance to return movement of the primary sliding plate, and guides for said sliding plates.
9. A spring hinge for swing doors comprising a hinge spindle, spring means operating in opposition to angular displacement of said hinge spindle, and an arni mounted in driving engagement with said spindle, two separate side plates for attachment to the door, slots in said side plates extending to the edges thereof, said arm being provided with tapped holes in which are oppositely projecting screws whereby the door carrying the side plates can be placed in position without removing the screws and secured to the arm by the screws and its angular position in relation to the hinge spindle adjusted.
