Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led August 25, 1917. Serial No. 188,205.
To all whom t may conce/m.'
Be it known that I, HENRI Vieron JULES J OUFFRET, engineer, citizen of the French Republic, residing at Paris, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Controlling Means, of which the following is a specification.
rllhis invention relates to controlling means and refers more particularly, although not exclusively, to apparatus ofthe' kind in question intended for controlling the valves of motors.
The principal object of the invention is to construct apparatus of the class under Vconsideration so that they can be .more easily regulated and so that they are more simple than has hitherto been the case.
The controlling means is of the type in which there is provided between the operating part and the part to be operated, an intermediate part which part carries a roller or drum, by means of which the motion is transmitted either from the operating part to the intermediate part or i'rom the intermediate part to the part to be operated, and the invention consists essentially in mounting the roller eccentrically with respect to an axle on the intermediate part and the furnishing means for turning the roller into and holding it in various positions for the purposes oi' taking up play or wear.
'I'he invention comprises, in addition to the principal feature just mentioned, certain other features which will be explained more fully hereafter. It includes particular methods or constructions for carrying the said invention into eiicct and, as new industrial products, devices ot the class in question embodying the said improvements, as Well as special parts suitable for their construction and motors provided with the devices.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood it will now be described With reference to the accompanying drawing which, as will be clearly understood is given merely by way of example.
Figure 1 of the said drawing is a side elevation of controlling means for controlling the valve of a motor by means oi a cam, the device being constructed according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on the lineQ--QA Fig. 1. The same letters of reference are employed to denote the same parts in both the views.
In the method of carrying out the invention more particularly illustrated in the drawing and showing, as before stated its application to the control of valve mechanism from a cam, a is the cam and is the valve rod which is to be operated through an intermediate lever c.
According. to the present invention two `axles c1 and c2 are provided mounted on the lever c, and on each oi' these axles is mounted a roller, (Z1 or Z2 in such a way that one of the rollers is in contact with the cam a and the other with the extremity of the valve rod b.
One lof the axles for instance the axle c2 is so formed as to comprise an eccentric portion cgo upon which is mounted the roller d2, it desired with the use of an intermediate sleeve or casing c.l
In this way, by turning the axle c2 through a greater or less angle, the operation is regulated in an extremely simple manner, and means of compensation are provided ior talring up any play which may exist;
In some instances, in addition to the arrangement or construction just described it is desirable to provide the axle with means Patented apr. 23, inte.,
for locking it in any position into which it 4 has been set when the regulation has beenl effected.
With this object in View it is preferable to form the lever c, `from two plates, between which are located the rollers Z2 and d1. There is provided on one of the plates, around the hole provided for the passage of the axle, on the outer face of the plate an enlarged portion 02 having teeth adapted to engage the teeth c", and at the other extremity of the axle is a screw thread adapted to enable the said axle to be fixed with respect to the lever c by means of a nut.
In this way, in order to eiiect the regulation, it is suiiicient to unscrew lightly the nut, in order to be able to disengage the` teeth 0200 from the teeth c to turn the axle c2 through the desired distance and then to screw u the nut again.
As will be readily understood, the invention is not limited to the particular con-- struction herein described and shown in the accompanying drawings, as the construction may be modified. For instance in some -cases a simple plunger may take the place of the lever.
In general any modifications may be introduced within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by Let- Patent of the `United States of Ameriea is:
l. Controlling means more particularly applieai'ile for control-ling valp4 ot motors eomprisitgg an operating part, anmperated pa t, and
an intermediate part, tlie latter adapted to receive motion from the operating part and to transmit it t0 the operated part, a roller on the intermediate part through which the movement is transn'litted from the operating part to the operated part, a pivot rotatably mounted on said intermediate part said roller being mounted eeeentrically with respect to said pivot and means for holding,` said pivot in ditt'erent positions ot' rotation with respect to said intermediate part to vary the/angle of ecentricity ot said roller.
Qontrolling means more particularly applicable -for controlling .falvesrotL motors` comprising an operative part, an operated part and an intermediate part adapted to receive motion Jfrom the operating' part and to transmit it to the operated part, a roller on the intermediate part through which roller the movement is transmitted from the operatingJ part to the operated part, a carrier upon which said roller is loosely and rotatably mounted, an axle upon the intermediate part with respect to which said carrier .is mounted eecentrically, and means for look ing the axle in Variousengular positie,
Les
'rotate t' rough the said plates, a projectingr portion 0&3
and to transn'tit it to the operated part. the
said intermediate part etnnprising two plates between which are located two rollers through which the motion is transmitted7 from the operating part to the operated part, one ot' the said rollers being1 mounted so amo eeeentricall)T upon an axle passing;
around tlnI aperture through which the axle passes on the outside ot one ot the plans the said projecting?r portion being provided n'it h teeth, an enlarged extension of the axle pre-- vided with teeth and adapted to engage with the previously mentioned teeth, Va screw threadtal portion` at the otlnr end ot the axle coming beyond the other plate and a nut adapted to screw on to the said screw threadeiportion otl the axle. all suhstant iallyv as and tor 'the purposes set forth.
In testimonlt7 whereof I have hereunto .set my hand in presence ot two subscribing witnesses.
