C. C. FARMER GOVERNOR TAPPET Filed y 12, 1925 INVENTOR CLYDE QFARMER ATTORNEY Patented A r. 6, 192a.
UNITED arars FFEQE.
CLYDE C. FABMER, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB TO WESTINGHOUSE AIR BRAKE COMPANY, OF 'WILIVIERDING, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
GOVERNOR 'I'APPET.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLYDE C. FARMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, rave invented new and useful Improvements in Governor Tappets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to speed control ap paratus and more particularly to a governor tappet therefor.
In speed control apparatus of the type having a governor portion with a crosshead, which moves in proportion to the speed of the train, tappets are used and are so disposed in the crosshead that upon a pre determined movement thereof said tappets will engage and unseat corresponding speed control valves for controlling the speed of the train.
It is highly desirable in this type of governor device to have tappets which are easily adjustable with respect to the distance which they project from the face of the crosshead, so that the tappets will unseat the speed control valves upon a predetermined movement of the crosshead, according to the adjustment of the tappets. It is also desirable that adjustable tappets of this type should be held in their adjusted position against any accidental movement which might be effected by sudden jars and vibrations.
The principal object of my invention 1s to provide a governor tappet of the above character.
In the accompanying drawing; Fig. 1 is afragmentary View, partly in section, showing a portion of a governor crosshead with a tappet embodying my invention mounted therein and also showing the position of a speed control valve with respect to the tappet; Fig. 2 a plan view of one of the tappet locking washers; Fig. 3 a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 a plan view of the other tappet locking washer; and Fig. 5 a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown a portion of a governor crosshead 1, in which is mounted a tappet 2 having screw-threaded engagement therein and provided with a key way 3. An end piece 4 is secured to one end of the tappet 2 and the other end thereof is adapted upon a predetermined movement of the Serial No- 29,732.
crosshead 1 to engage and unseat a speed control valve 6, which is contained in a casing 7 and is normally held seated by a coil spring 8. The position of the tappet 2 with respectto the valve 6 is-freely adjustable by reason of its screw-threaded engagement in the crosshead 1.
In order to lock the tappet 2 in its adjusted position, I provide a washer 9 having a central opening of sufiicient diameter to receive the tappet 2. The washer 9 is pro- Vided with a plurality of radial ribs 10 on one face and a. tang 11 projecting perpendicularly from the edge of the other face.
A co-operating cup-shaped washer 12 is provided, having a central opening of the same diameter as the opening in the washer 9 and having a tang 13, which is adapted to engage the key way 3 of the tappet 2, so that rotation of said tappet will also rotate the washer 12. One face of the washer 12 has a plurality of radial grooves 14 of a shape corresponding to the ribs on the washer 9. I
In assembling the tappet 2, with the end piece 4 removed, is screwed into the crosshead 1 so that it projects out on the opposite side. The washer 9 is then slipped over the tappet 2 and so placed that the tang 11 engages a recess 15 in the crosshead 1, thus holding said washer against rotative move ment with respect to the tappet 2.
The washer '13 is then placed on the tappet 2 with the tang 13 engaging the key way 3 so that any rotation of the tappet 2 will also rotate the washer 3. A coil spring 16 is then placed over the tappet 2 so that one end of said spring fits into the cup-shaped face of washer 12. The end piece 4 is then applied to the tappet 2 in such a manner that the spring 16 is compressed between the flange 5 of end piece 4 and the washer 12, so as to yieldingly' press the washer 12 into engagement with the washer 9.
It will now be evident that as the tappet 2 is rotated, in order to adjust it to a desired position with respect to valve 6, that the washer 13 will also be rotated and the grooves 14 will register with corresponding ribs of the washer 9 as the tappet is rotated, so as to lock the tappet in the desired position of adjustment, and at the same time permit of ready readjustment by merely rotating the tappet by hand.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A tappet, a member in which said tappet has screw-threaded engagement. a washer mounted on said tappet and secured against rotation with the tappet, a washer mounted on and rotatable with the tappet and means -for effecting a locking engagen'ient between said washers.
Q. A tappet, a member in which said tappet has screw-threaded engagement, a washer mounted on said tappet and secured against rotation with the tappet, a washer mounted on and rotatable with the tappet, co-operating means on said washers for efit'ecting a locking engagement between said washers, and a spring for pressing one washer into locking engagement with the other washer.
8. A tappet, a member in which said tappet has screw-threaded engagement. a washer mounted on said tappet and secured against rotation with respect to said tappet, and a washer mounted on and rotatable with said tappet, one washer having radial ribs adapt ed to engage corresponding radial recesses in the other washer, for ell'ecting a locking engagement between said washers.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto so: my hand.
CLYDE C. FARIJICR.
