More specific objects of this invention may be said to consist in the provision of a machine of the above mentioned character wherein guides are en'iployed for engagement with the groove or space between the planks forming the decking for consequently keeping the machine in the proper position as it is being moved :lorivardly and operated; to provide feeding means wherein the guid- .lllg or bunching means and the feeding finger are of novel construction; to improve the cinistruction oi the shoes of the feeding means so that they will etlcctively insure of the movement of the feeding means in one direction when engaged by the reciprocating actuators or operating arms; and to also provide improved means for mounting and actuating the callcingr tool and the actuating arms.

With the above and other objects in view. the invention accordingly consists in the novel features oi construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinaitter referred to and more particularly pointed, out in the, specification and claims.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
' Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings there is provided a main frame preferably of a rectangular configuration consisting of side bars 1 connected by a front cross bar 2 and a rear cross bar 3. Arranged between the rear portion of the frame are bearing plates t in which is journaledan axle 5 having supporting rollers or wheels 6 mounted thereon while elongated bolts 7 are adjustably arranged through the respective ends of these bearing plates and through the adjacent side bars 1 and the rear cross bar 3 being in turn engaged by nuts which cooperate with the plates and the side and end bars for adjustably mounting the rear portion of the frame with respect to the deck 9. In supporting the front end of the frame spaced bearing blocks 10 are adjustably mounted on the front cross bar 2 being rigidly held at various adjusted positions by means of set screws 11. These blocks 10 are formed with vertical bores in which are mounted the threaded portions 12 of supporting legs 13 to the lower ends of which arerigidly fastened brackets 1% while supporting rollers 15 are j ournaled in these brackets and are of course engageable with said deck 9. Suitable adjusting elements such as nuts 16 are mounted on the threaded portions 12 of the legs and act as bearings contacting with the upper and lower edges of the bearing block 10 for insuring of the maintenance of the legs in the properly adjusted positions. By this construction it is apparent that the forward portion of the frame is adjusted with respect to the deck.
As intimated, there has been provided a secondary frame generally indicated by the numeral 16. In reducing this feature of the invention to practice the frame may be said to consist of a pair of substantially U-shaped supports comprising an intermediate portion which constitutes a cross bar 1'7 and spaced standards 18 while bracket arms 19 project outwardly at right angles preferably from the upper and lower ends of these standards. A platform 20 is supported upon and secured to the cross bar 17. Opposed pairs of vertical rods 21 rise from the side bars 1 of the main frame near the ends thereof and are engaged by thebrackets 19 while disposed about these rods and positioned respectively between the side bars 1 and the lower brackets and between the upper brackets and adjustable elements such as nuts 22 mounted on the upper ends of the rods 21. are coiled springs and 24. These springs serve to yieldably support the secondary frame with respect to the main frame and in addition serve as a means for absorbing shocks likely to be transmitted to the calking chisel in a manner that will hereinafter become apparent.
With a view toward providing the improved plunging or calking means proper a standard 25 is mounted on the platform. 20 while also mounted on the platform directly in advance of the standard is a casing 26 desirably of a rectangular configuration the side walls of which are formed with opposed slots 27 while the front wall is provided with spaced vertical slots 28 for a purpose that will presently appear. A shaft 29 is retatably mounted in the upper end of the standard 25 while carried by one end of the shaft and positioned within the casing 26 is a disk 30. A pin 31 extends eccentrically from the outer face of the disk and is formed with a head 32. This headed pin is arranged in engagement with a correspoint ingly formed transverse or diametrical slot 33 provided in the adjacent face of another disk 34. A plunger rod 35 is secured by suitable fasteners 36 vertically of the opposite face of the disk 34: and is slidably ::r-- ranged through opposed openings in the top of the casing 26 and in the platform 20. By this construction it will be up parent that when the shaft 29 is rotated owing to the pin and slot connection between the disks 30 and 34c and the slidablc mounting of the plunger rod the latter will be reciprocated during the rotation of the shaft 29. A chuck head 37 is formed on the lower end of the plunger rod 35 and receives the calking tool generally designated by the numeral 38 in the present instance in the form of a chisel having a shank 39 formed on its upper end with a head 40 which is receivable in the chuck while the outer edge of the engaging end of this chisel is curved longitudinally as at 41. and transversely as at 42 this construction serving to insure of an effective tamping or calking of the milk-- ing material. in. a manner that will hereinafter become apparent. A counterbalancing weight in the form of a ball 4-3 is detachably connected to the upper projecting end of the plunger rod iictnatable with the plunger rod and positioned forwardly of the casing and vertically slidable through openings in the platform 20 are spaced :ictuator arms 43 for the feeder mechanism. Connection is preferably maintained bctween these arms 'by means of bracket arms 4A the outer ends of which are detachably fastened by suitable fasteners such as screws 4C5 to the upper ends of the arms while the inner ends are fastened as at 4-6 to the rod 35, the medial portions being slidable through Cir lllt) order that the plunging or calking means may be. operated independently of the feeding and bunching means, it is only necessary toeengag'e the plate 72 and-move it forwaidly so that it may be engaged with the lugs 81 on therod and thereby locked in afterward orinactive position.
Coiiperating with the groove engaging guides. 67 and 68 is another guide 90, the threaded shank 91 of which is arranged through a-bearing block 92 in turn adjustably mounted on theirear cross bar 3. A set-screw 93 serves to maintain the bearing block 92 in position while suitable adjust 'able elemen ts such as nuts 94 are mounted on the threaded shank 91 to cooperate with the block 92 and maintain the shank 91. of theguide: in a properly adjusted position relative to the decking. A bracket is preferably connected to the shank 91 of the g'uideOO while journaled in this bracket is a supporting roller 96 for insuring of a proper actuation ofthe guide and maintaining. it in a-properposition -within the" groove .69.
To facilitate the manipulation of the mach-ine, gripping handles 97"are connected to the top of'thecasing 26 and the reariU- shaped support-of the secondary frame.

In connection with the foregoing, it is to b understood that the springs 23 and 24; which yieldably support the secondary frame also act as recoil springs taking shock of the chisel 3S oii' of the machine. To permit of the independent operation of the calking chisel it is only necessary to arrange the plate 72 in a forwardly locked position behind the lugs 81 thus locking the feeding mechanism in inactive position. This is done at times when the first piece of material is laid in the groove (39.
It is believed in view of the foregoing description that a further detailed description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise it is believed that the As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. It is also to he understood that the languageused in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention, which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
Having thus fully described this invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
l. A calking machine including a movably and yieldingly mounted support. a vertically reciprocatory plunger rod operably mounted on the support, a calking tool carried by the lower end of the rod, means for supporting calking material on the support, horizontally. movable feeding mechanism suspended from the support and through which the calking material is trained, actuating members connected to and operable with the plunger rod for moving the feeding mechanism in one direction so that the feeding mechanism will engage a fresh supply of calking material, and. resilient means cooperating with the feeding mechanism for moving the feeding mechanism in an opposite direction to advance and bunch the calking material beneath the calking tool so that the material will subsequently be acted upon by the calking tool.
2. A ealking machine including a movably and yieldingly mounted support, a verltltl lli') llfll tically reciprocatory plunger rod operably mounted on the support, a calking tool can ried by the lower end of the rod, means for supporting calking material on. the support, horizontally movable feeding mechanism suspended from the support and through which the calking material is trained, actuating members connected to and operable with the plunger rod for moving the feedino' mechanism in one direction so that the feeding mechanism will. engage a fresh sup ply of calking material, resilient means co operating with the feeding mechanism for moving the feeding mechanism in an opposite direction to advance and bunch the calking material beneath the calking tool so that th material will subsequently be acted upon by the calking tool, and means depending from the feeding mechanism and the support for guiding the machine duringmovement. t
3. A calking machine including a movably and yieldingly mounted support, plunging means operably mounted on the support, means for supporting calking material on the support, horizontally movable mechanism suspended from the support for feeding the calking material beneath the plunging means so that it will be acted upon by the plunging means, means operable with the plunging means for acting against the feeding mechanism to move said mechanism. in one direction, resilient means cooperating with the actuating means for advancing the feeding mechanism in the opposite direction, and means for locking the feeding mechanism in an inactive position and against the tension of the resilient means whereby to permit of the independent operation. of the plunging means when desired.
4t. In a calking machine, the combination with a support, and a vertically reciproca tory calking tool. mounted thereon, of mechanism suspended from the support for feed ing and launching calking material beneath the calking tool, said mechanism including a frame, a feeder finger slidable on. the frame, means for sliding the finger in one direction so that it will. engage a fresh supply of calking material, resilient means mounted in the frame and coiiperating with the finger for moving the finger in the opposite direction so that the finger will advance the calking material into a position beneath the calking tool whereby to permit of the call:- ing of the material into position by the call:- ing tool.
5. In a calking machine, the combination with a movable and yieldingly mounted support, a vertically reciprocatory calking tool mounted on the support and actuators movable with the calking tool. of mechanism 'for feeding calking material including a frame suspended from the support, shoes slidably mounted on. the frame and disposed beneath the actuators so as to be engaged by the actuator-s and slid in one direction, a feeder finger mounted between the shoes and movable therewith so as to engage a fresh supply of calking material, and resilient means mounted in the frame and cooperating with the shoesformoving theshoes in an opposite direction to advance the finger and position calking material beneath the calking tool so that the material will subsequently be engaged and forced into position by the calking tool.

In a calking machine, the combination with a movable and y'ieldingly mounted support, a vertically reciprocatory calking tool mounted on the support and actuators movable with the calking tool, of mechanisu'l for feeding calking material including a frame suspended from the support, shoes slidably mounted on the frame and disposed beneath the actuators so as to be engaged by the actuators and slid in one direction, a feeder finger mounted between the shoes and movable therewith so as to engage fresh supply of calking material, resilientmeans mounted in the frame and cooperating with the shoes for moving the shoes in an opposite direction to advance the finger and position calking material so that it will subsequently be engaged and forced into position by the calking tool, and guides depending from the frame for guiding the feeding mechanism during movement. a
7. In a calking machine, the combination with a movable and yieldingly mounted sup port, a vertically reciprocatory calking tool mounted on the support, and actuators connected'to and movable with the calking tool, of mechanism for feeding calking material. including a frame adiustably suspended from the support, calking material guides carried by the frame, shoes slidably mounted on the frame and engageable by the actuactors so as to he slid in one direction, a feeder finger mounted between the shoes and movable therewith so as to engage a fresh supply of calking material, resilient means mounted in the frame and coiiperating with the shoes for moving the shoes in an opposite direction to advance calking material into a position beneath the calking tool, the finger insuring of the material pasing through and being bunched by the guides so that the material will subsequently be engaged and effectively forced into position by the calking tool.
8. In a calking machine, the combination with a movably and yieldingly mounted, support, a vertically reciprocatory calking tool mounted on the support and actuators connected to and movable with the calking tool, of mechanism for feeding calking material including a frame suspended from the support, calking material guides carried teriorly vof the sidesthereof, shoes connectedto the rods, a feeding finger connected between the shoes, the shoes being positioned so as to beengagedby the actuators and thereby moved in one direction so that the feeder finger will engage a fresh supply of calking material, springs disposed about and connected to the rods and exerting a tension on the rods so as-to move the rods and consequently the shoes and finger in an opposite direction so that the finger will advance and force the oalking material between the guides to insure of the bunching or foldin of the material preparatory to the forcing o the material intoposition by the calking tool, and other guides depending from the frame for: guiding the feeding mechanism during forward movement of the calking machine.
