Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filewfieptcmber 25,1919. Seris1-iN0.326;340.
To all whom may concern:
Be it known that II, Annexe. GJSi RnU- one, a citizen of the United States, residing at Odaiiah, in? the county of hshland and tltate otil isconsin, have invented (561i3t111 new and useful Improvements in Pump- "lilruius. ol which the tollmvingis a specification.
lily in vention relates to new and useful iniu'ovtuncnts in a pa nnp attachment and more particularly to a drain tor the PUIHPPIPO or t). linder.
l"he invention has :lor itsprincipal object the constriurtion oi a drain which may be easily connected to thepunip pipe beneath the plutit'orin :lor draining the pipe oiavate' so that itvvill not freeze.
1t further object of: the invention resides in the provision. of a valve adapted for closing the drain when pumping andadapted to be raised to open the drain alter pumpin so that the Water Will (lliilIliflOl'H the pipe.
A further object resides in the provision of novel means for connecting the drain to the pump pipe as Well as means for operating the valve and holding it in both its open and closed positions.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel details oi: construction and arrangement of parts Which will be more clearly understood from the following specification and drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2--2 ofFig. 3, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates the platform over the well and 2 indicates the pump pipe or cylinder which extends through the platform down into the Well. It is a Well known fact thatin Winter it is do s- 'red to drain the pump pipe, lOGlOW the platterm. 1., so that the Water Will not freeze in the pipe and break the same. It is for this purpose that my invention is provided.
My attachment comprises a block 3 the in nor face of Which is concave as more clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawingsso as to conform to the curvature of the pipe. A transversely extending opening or bore 4k is formed in the block 3, intermediate the ends thereof, and this bore or opening extends troin the concave face of the block to a point adjacent the 1 opposite side. This here 1e1- =opening 4- atlapted to register With an opening 5 formed in the i pipe A vertical o iening 6 r is also formed in the block 3 and extends ilrolu the top thereof and communicatesuvith the openin-w or bore a as more particularly illust 'ated 111 Fig, 3 of? i the i draw.- ings. L;'L16CQSS is formed in the concave iiace of the block 3, around the end of the openingorborc 4 and is-adapted to receives ruhher gasket 7 so that a tight fit Will hceecured around the open iug 5.
A flen eS is "Formed i on each side of 1 the v block, adjacent the rear face thereof, and an extension 9 extends upwa rdly from the block as is more particularly illustrated in Fig. 1. of the drawings. Po 10 aresecuredtoi the l topof the block 3,"adjacentthe eoncavefacc thereof, and suppmt: a pie to 11:. at: the upper end of" the extension 9. If desired the plate 11 niight be"connected tothe extension 9in :lny desired manner. The for uirdend ot the plate 1.1 isconeam is; to conform to; the curvature of the pipe which it engages. who opening is 1 formed in the plate 11 for pu rpose to belatcr described.
U-shaped clamps or rods 12 extend around. the pipe 2 and the end pass through the flanges 8 formed on the block 3. Nuts 13 are received on the ends of the rods for securely holding them in position. A similar U shaped clamp rod 1a extends around the pipe 2 and the ends pass through the extension 9 adjacent the upper end thereof. The arms of this U-shaped clamp 14 engage the side of the plate 11. Nuts 15 are received upon the ends of the rods 14 for securing them to the extension 9. I .A tube 16 is secured to the top of the plate 11, around theopening therein, and this tube extends through the platform 1 as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 1, of the draw ings. A tapered valve 17 is adapted to be received in the vertical opening 6 of the block 3 and a reduced extension 18 is formed on the to J of the valve and has an eye 19 secured t ereto. The tapered valve 17' is preferably of such a length to extend entirely through the opening 6 when in position. A Wire 20 is secured to the eye 19 and extends upwardly through the opening in the plate 11 and through the tube 16. The upper end of the Wire 20 is provided with an eye 21 for a purpose to be later described.
A coiled spring 22 has the lower end received on the shoulder of the valve 17 formed by the reduced ortion 18. Theend of the coded spring surrounds the reduced portion 18 as well as the wire 20. The upper end of this coiled spring engages the unerside of the plate 11 and normally holds the valve Within the opening as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings.
A hook 23 is secured tothe pipe above the platform 1 and is adapted to receive the eye 21 of the wire 20 when the valve 17 is raised.
From the above detailed description of the construction of my drain it is thought that the manner of using the same as well as the advantages will be clearly understood. The drain is connected to the pipe 2 as shown and described and when pumping is taking place the valve 17 is received in the opening 6 as. shown and is held in position by the coiled spring 22. After the pumping has been stopped it is desired to drain the Water from the pipe 2 so that it will not '-freeze and burst the pipe. To do this the ring 21 is grasped and raised upwardly thereby pulling upon the wire 20 and raising the valve 17 a ainst the tension of the coiled 7 spring 22. Tie eye 21 is engaged over the hook 23 so as to hold the valve open sothat the water may properly drain therefrom. When one wishes to start the pump again they merely disengage the eye 21 from the hook 23 and the coiled spring 22 will force the valve 17 back in position to close the opening 6. The valve 17 is of such a length that the lower end will not be drawn from the opening when raised. By making the valve this length it will readilv rose-at itself when the wire is released.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved, form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, etc., as may prove expedi ent and fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A pump drain comprising in combination with a pipe having an opening therein, a block secured to the pipe and having a transverse opening reoistering with the opening in the pipe and a vertical opening registering with the transverse opening, an extension formed on the block, a plate secured to the extension above the block, a valve for closing the vertical opening, a coiled spring having one end engaging the valve and the opposite end engaging the plate on the extension, a tube secured to the top of the plate, a wire secured to the valve and extending through the tube, an eye formed on the upper end of the wire, and a hook secured to the pipe adapted to receive the eye.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
