Be it known that I, HJALMAR Nilsson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hammond, in thecounty of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and uset'ul Improvements in Shearing Machinery, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to shearin machinery, and more particularly to w iat is commonly known as plate shears.
The object of the invention is an improveinent in the construction of the ordinary plate shears or shearing machines of the class hereinafter described, whereby an etlicient and durable machine is produced at a minimum cost.
Another objecto the invention is to produce a machine wherein the main bearings support the main shaft without involving an overhanging or bendiing strain on the shaft of the machine. i
With these and other objects in view, my invention comprises certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referringto the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the main frame or casting which is provided with a hollow elongated body 2 (Fig. 3)., and above the elongated of my sectional view taken on line er @estrellada 12 are vertical bearing Stand ards 3, in which standards `3 suitably journaled the driving shaft 11.
The primary jaw 5 is supported upon frame l, and said jaw 5 `comprises the hollow end frames 5"', together with, blade 9; each frame 5 is provided with transverselyf alined elongated slots 7, through which bolts` 6 extend, which bolts 6 .tasten the :trames 5 in adjusted positions upon the main trame. 1. Each frame is provided at its front edge with a flange 5, upon which rests the lower edge of `the blade 9 (Fig. 10); the blade 9 is of the same width as the flange 5C, and fastening means, as screws 5b, secure the ends of the blade to the frames 5c. Bolts 8 are `mounted upon the righta-ngled extensions 1fL of the frame 1, and these bolts serve to push or adjust` the jaw 5 transversely Of the frame, by the bolts 8 bearing against the outer faces of the frames 5, so that the blade 9 can be ad- .justed to a nicety with reference to the blade 9 of the auxiliary jaw or ram. i
The rainl() is secured in place by the detachable plates l1, which platos 11 are tastened upon the front of the central body portion 2 by means of bolts 12; the rain or auxiliary jaw 1() slides behind` these plates ll, and on the ram or auxiliary 'jaw 10 is a blade 9a that cooperates with blade 9 for shearing or cutting a sheet or bar of metal. The ram or jaw 10 is provided with extensions 13 in the standards 3, and in these eX- tensions 13 arerotatably mounted the ecccntries 14C. y

17, and a movable clutch member 18 `is keyed upon `shaft l and when the movable clutch member m18 meshes with the fixed )clutch member 17, the motor driving the gear wheel 15 will impart a rotary motion to the shaft 4 and hence .a reciprocal move ment through eccentrics 14 will be imparted to the auxiliary jaw for producing the shearing or cutting action. ot the knives.
To operate the clutch, pedal 19 `is mounted through links 20, at 2l., upon the frame 1, and connected. to one of the links at 22, Fig. 1, is a vertical link 23, which link 23 is pivotallv connected to lever link 24; the lever link 24; is pivotally mounted on lug 25, and the inner end of the lever link `24: is pvotally consented to a vertically-movable pin 26, which pin 26 is adapted to engage g at its inner end the movable clutch member .,.ciently to allow the lever link 27, pivoted at; 28 upon the movable clutch member 18, to throw7 the clutch member intomesh with clutch member 17 through the action of the s ring 29 attachedto' the lower end of link 217.' Upon the operator releasing pedal 19, through the action of arspring in the housing 30, partly containing the pin 26, the pin 26 will be forced downwardly causing this lower end to engage the clutch member 18, and as the clutch member revolves, its cam surface 31 will be engagedby the lower end of pin 26, resulting in the end riding over the cam surface land causing the movable clutch member to be disengaged from the clutch member 17, ,thereby stopping the rotary movement of shaft 4. Each of thev balance weight devices comprises a bracket32 secured to the top of the central body portion 2 and pivotally mounted upon this bracket 32 is an arm 33; upon the outer end of the arm 33 is a large weight 34, and the inner end of the arm 33 is provided with an enlarged apertured portion 35, through which apertured portion extends a pin 36 andmcunted on the ends of this pin are links 37, and these links 37 are also mounted upon a sliding block 38, which block 38 is mounted upon bolt 39; bolt 39 is provided, with a nut 40, and between the block 38 and nut 40 is positioned coil spring 41. The bolt 39 is provided with a lower sleeve-like'end 42, similar in construction to hollow or sleeve-like lugs 43, which lugs 43 are integral lwith the upper part of the jaw 10;"a pin or bolt 44 extends through the lugs 43 and sleeve 42, holding the bolt 39 in position. The spring 41 relieves 'any jar or shock bya Sudden movement ofthe auxiliar jaw. Y. Y

In Figs. 8 and 9, I have shown an Voiler ring 46, fitting around shaft 4 at each of the vbearing standards Each standard 3 is provided with Yan enlarged'annular groove 47, which groove'is provided with an enlarged or Voutwardlydiared part 48 at its bottom, ,constituting a reservoir for a lubricant, in ywhich part 48 the ring 46'is freely mounted. By reason of this ring` oiler or oiler ring, the bearings are efficiently lubricated.

1j. In a machine of the class described, the
combination with a frame, of a primary jaw mounted upon said frame, said ]aw co1npris ing hollow ends, said ends provided with elongated slots, fastening means in said slots and adjustably securing the aw to the frame, horizontally-positioncd bolts on Said framefor adjusting the jaw in one direction upon the frame', an auxiliary jaw coperating with said primary jaw, said aws provided with blades, and means lor moving the auxiliary jaw with respect to the primary jaw.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a frame, of a primary l'aw on said frame, an auxiliary, movable jaw carried by the frame, a pair of lugs Secured to the auxiliary jaw, a. bolt secured between said lugs, a block on said bolt, a nut on said bolt, a spring positioned between the block and nut, links connected to said block. a weighted arm pivotally mounted upon the frame, means connecting said arm to the links, and means for moving said auxiliary jaw upon the frame.
3. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a frame, of a primary and an auxiliary jaw carried by said frame, a shaft journaled upon said frame. means con` necting said shaftto the auxiliary jaw, a gear wheel loosely mounted upon said shaft` said gear wheel provided with a clutch member, a. slidable clutch member keyed upon said shaft and coperating with the clutch member of the gear wheel, said slidable clutch member provided with a cam surface, a lever link mounted upon the frame and pivotally connected to the sliding clutch member, a spring connected to said lever link, a casing provided with a sliding pin mounted upon the frame, a. spring in said casing and exerting a downward pressure upon the pin. the pin normally enga ging the cam face lor the sliding clutch member for holding the clutch member in an inoperative position, and manually-operatcd means connected to the pin for holding it in an unset position and releasing thc sliding clutch member for engagement with the clutch member of the gear wheel.
4. In a shearing machine. the combination with a primary frame, of a primary jaw mounted upon said frame. said jaw comprising hollow frames provided with fianges, a blade resting upon said fianges, means fastening the blade to the hollow frames, means carried by the hollow frames and said primary frame and being capable of adjusting the jaw upon the primary frame and secure the same in an adjusted position, an auxiliary jaw carried by the primary frame and coperating with said primary jaw, and means for moving the auxiliary jaw with respect to the primary jaw.
5. In a shearing machine, the combination with aprimary frame, of aprimary jaw adj ustably mounted upon said primary frame,
said jaw including a blade and frames at the end of said blade, means carried by the primary frame and the frames of the jaw for securing the same in adjusted positions transversely of the primary frame, means carried by the primary frame and cooperating with the jaw for adjusting thel jaw transversely of the primary frame, and an auxiliary jaw carried by the frame and cooperating with-the primary jaw.

In a shearing machine, the combination `with a primary frame, of a primary jaw slidably mounted upon said frame, said jaw comprising a pair of hollow frames having transversely-alined, elongated slots formed in their bottoms, a blade secured to ,the inner faces of said hollow frames, means extending through elongated slots and portions of the primary frame for securing the hollow frames and blade in an adjusted position, means carried by the primary frame and bearing against the outer fac-es of the hollow frames for adjusting the same trans-- versely of the primary frame, and an auxiliary jaw cooperating with the primary jaw. 7. In a shearing machine, the combination with a primary frame, of a primary jaw adjustably mounted upon said primary frame, said jaw comprising a pair of hollow frames each having open ends, each hollow frame provided with alined slots in its bottom, a blade secured to the inner faces of said hollow frames, means extending through the slots of the hollow frames and portions of the primary frame for securing the primary jaw in an adjusted position, means on the primary frame and engaging the hollow frames for adjusting the `primary jaw upon the primary frame, and an auxiliary jaw cooperating with the primary jaw. l In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature.
