Roller-and-breast mills.-A mill for grinding paints, inks &c, comprising a roller having a rotary movement and a reciprocating axial movement and a grinding block adjustably adapted to the feed hopper, is characterized by the hopper and grinding block being supported by a frame adapted to slide in a substantially vertical direction with respect to the main frame of the machine. The roller 1 is supported by its axle 2 in bearings 47 mounted in side standards 19. The hopper 4 and grinding bar 5, Fig. 2, are bolted, through the interposition of packing strips, to a lifting frame 22 slidable in the standards 19 and raised or lowered by a cam or eccentric 25 operated by gear wheels 28, 29, the lifting frame being provided with a roller 24 to bear on the eccentric and the eccentric being provided with notches 30 to receive the roller at the limit of its travel. The lifting frame is adapted to be bolted to the standards 19 in the working position of the mill by swivel bolts 21. The lifting frame may be operated by a rack and pinion. The grinding bar 5 is guided radially toward the roller by a surface 8 on the hopper and is adjusted toward the roller by screws 9 provided with lock nuts 12, the screws being carried by a bar 10 which is dovetailed to receive a bar 14 which carries screws 15 for adjusting a roller 13 against the bar 5 to press the latter against the surface 8. The roller 1 is reciprocated by a cam surface 32 and a roller 31. The cam surface is provided on a gear wheel 33 loosely mounted on an extension 53 of the main bearing 47, a thrust bearing 55 being provided between the gear-wheel 33 and the standard 19. The gear-wheel 33 is driven by a gear-wheel 36 fixed to the shaft 2 and idle-wheels 56, 57, so that the gear ratio may be changed when desired to alter the relative motion between the grinding bar and roller. The paint &c. is removed from tha roller by a scraper 6 and the gear wheels are enclosed in a casing. Specification 274,162 is referred to.
