AM PHDTO-UI'HUGEAPHIG CQMYMS DRNEB PROCESS) ivrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PERRY BROWN, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT-IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,406, dated November 26, 1872,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERRY BROWN, of Louisville, in the county of J efi'erson and State of Kentucky, have invented an Improvement in Gar-Couplings, of which the following is a specification:
My present invention relates to an improved apparatus for coupling and uncoupling cars, the same being particularly designed for employment in connection with an automatic coupling for which I propose taking out separate Letters Patent. The invention relates to a vertical extension of the coupling-pin and winged shaft described in that case, and to providing them with lateral arms adapted to engage with each other, so as to set the de-' vices within the draw-head in readiness for automatic coupling of freight and passenger cars.
Figure 1 of drawing is a front view of a car-body with my improved coupling device attached. Fig. 2 is a partly-sectional view, (looking d0wnward,) showing the link entered between the rollers and about to come in contact with the winged plate which supports the coupling-rod.
The draw-head A is provided with rollers B, as in the other case above referred to. The
winged shaft 0 is extended vertically and en-.
the bracket, and is then turned on its axis, the arm G will strike the plate F of the shaft 0 and cause it likewise to turn ori its'axis and carry its wing a under the coupling-rod, so as to support the same. In that position the devices are in position to effect the coupling of two cars automatically, since, when the link of a draw-head attached to another car enters the draw-head, it will strike the Wing at of the shaft 0, and, pushing it back, allow the rod to fall through the link; I have constructed the bracket D of two parallel horizontal plates, the lower one being notched or cut out at its front edge to permit the arm G to pass through it, so that when the shaft is turned to the left 7 the saidarm will rest on the bracket, and thus the rod will be supported independent of the winged shaft. The result of this arrangement is to allow cars (one or both) provided with my improved coupling to come together without coupling or connecting.
It will be seen that this invention is of such a character that the devices may be set in.
readiness for automatic coupling without any necessity for entering between the cars.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters
