IMPROVEMENT .IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
'Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,059, dated August 19,1873; application led June 25, 1873.
To all whom, it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES TEMPLE, of Mooresburg, in the county of Montour and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make part of this Specicaticn, in which- 4 Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a car-coupler embracing my improvements. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section, the coupling-link being removed and the pin in position to couple. Fig. 3 represents a front view of the coupler, showing the pin in the position it occupies when the cars are coupled; and Fig. 4 represent-s a view of the pin detached, with its guiding-yoke.
My invention relates to car-couplers; and it consists in such a combination and arrangement of the several parts constituting my improvements as that the coupling-pin is supported by the sprin g-gates in position to couple, vand the link is ejected from the drawhead when desired, and guided by said gates in its entrance into the mouth of the drawhead, and is also held by an angular plate in a position to couple onto the next car of the train, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, A A' represent the draw-head of a railway-car, having the ordinary bell-mouthed or other shaped opening B in the bumper G thereof for the entrance of the link D. Hinged to the rear face of the `bumper C are two curved gates, E, which are so located as that they are thrown in contact between the upper and lower timbers A A' of the draw-head by springs E', which are attached also to the rear face of the bumper, and arranged to be always in contact with said gates. F represents the couplin g-pin,passin g down, when coupling, through holes in both the upper and lower horizontal timbers A A', and guided in its vertical movements by a yoke, F', which encircles the said timbers A A', and is bolted to said pin F at its upper end, so that it moves with the latter in coupling and uncoupling the cars. On the top face of the lower timber A' of the draw head is arranged an angular plate of metal, H, which serves to hold the coupling-link in proper position to couple with the next car of the train, whatever may be the height of the draw-head of the car to be coupled, as clearly shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
When it is desired to couple cars the pin F is drawn vertically upward until it clears the spring-gates E, which are then forced inward and underneath said pin by the springs E', which gates E support it in position for coupling, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. rlhe link l),
entering the aperture B, strikes the gates E,
forcing them asunder, which leaves the pin F free to drop down through the link, being guided in such movement by the yoke F', as shown in Figs. '3 and 4. The link passes through the gates and into the draw-head unl til it strikes the plate H,'in the different an gles of which it is adjusted to suit the height of the draw-head of the next car to be coupled. It' it be desired to drop the couplinglink it is only necessary to withdraw the coupling-pin, and the force of the spring-gates drives the link out without being touched by the attendant.
Having described my invention, I claim- The combination of the draw-head A A', the Spring-gates E, which operate as a Sup. port for the coupling-link l) and to eject it from the drawhead, the coupling-pin F, guiding-yoke F', and the angular guard H, the whole arranged to operate as Set forth.
In testimony whereof Ihave hereunto signed my name.
Witnesses: JAMES TEMPLE. DANIEL J. ROTE, 1). C. KELLEM.
