To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JULIEN STRANDERS, a subject of the King of England, anda resident of Brooklyn, county of Kings, in the city and State of New York, have invent ed certain new and useful Improvements in Display Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to display devices and broadly considered contemplates the provision of a very simple and inexpensive device of this character which will afford a novel and attractive advertisement for various commodities.

In particular, my present invention consists in the provision of a carton of exaggerated size having suitable advertising mat ter printed on its several surfaces, and one wall of the carton body being provided with an integral panel extending alongits longitudinal edge and having a marginal contour corresponding to that of'a fictitious article, presumably adapted to be contained within the carton and thereby simulating an arrangement of such a fictitious article in juxtaposition to the carton;

It is another important object of my invention to provide a display device for the purpose stated,.which is formed from a single blank of-cardboard or other flexible material and is provided with a collapsible body with the displav panel extending from one wall thereof, another of the body walls having an extension rigid therewith and in effect constituting a continuation thereof which is out out from an adjacent body'wall. and is adapted to support the carton and the display panel in an obliquely inclined position.

Having the aforementioned objects in view, the present invention comprehends certain novel and improved combinations of mechanical elements. and the structural characteristics thereof, as will be more fully developed in the following description. and subsequently incorporated in the subjoined claims. 3

Preferably, the device as illustrated in the accompanying drawing is'formed frona heavy cardboard, though if desired aluminum, tin or other sheet metal having the requisite stiffness may be employed. The

device includes a carton of exaggerated size, generally indicated by the numeral 5. This carton is formed by scoring the sheet of flexible material along longitudinal parallel lines at spaced intervals to thereby provide the hingedly connected body walls 6, 7 8 and 9 respectively. The walls 6 and 7 of the carton have suitable advertising matter printed or otherwise delineated upon. their outer surfaces as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The walls 7 and 9 are transversely scored adj acent to their opposite ends to provide the inwardly foldable flaps 10. The wall 6 is similarly provided at its ends with a relatively long flap llwhich is scored adjacent to its free end as at 12 to I provide a sealing tab 13. Thus, from reference to Fig. 20f the drawing, it will be observed that the ends of the carton may be securely closed by first folding the flaps inwardly toward each other and then folding the flaps 11 inwardly and downwardly upon the flaps 10 and inserting the tab 13 between one end of the flaps 10 and the wall 8.

The :wall 6 of the carton is provided with an extension panel 1a which projects laterally from one longitudinal edge of said wall and is properly out so that the outline thereof corresponds to that of a fictitious article which is presumably adapted, to be contained within the carton. The surface of this panel is also properly marked or' ornamented in correspondence to the marking upon. the article which is actually offered for sale and of which the fictitious article is an enlarged reproduction. This panel 14 which is an-integral continuation of the wall 6 of the carton is out from. one end of the flexible sheet of material. The wall 9 which is formed from the other end of the sheet is scored adjacent to its end to provide a bendable flap or strip 15 which is adapted to be extended at right angles to the wall 9 and adhesively or otherwise perman ently secured to the rear face of the panel ll contiguous to its juncture with the longitudinaledge of the carton wall 6. The wall 9 is also provided with a rigld integral extension 16 disposed in the plane of said wall, which extension is cut out from the wall 8 of the carton body, thereby providing in the latter wall an opening 17 which is de-. signed to receive the extension 16 when the .relationtothe juncture of the body wall 7 and 8 of the cart-on which also contacts with the support rhusit will, be seen that the extension 16 serves to support the carton and the display'panel la in an obliquely in dined-position relative to the support upon which the device may be placed, and therefore exposing to view the advertising matter contained upon the surfaces of the Walls 6 and 7. V i V lVhen the device is set up inits display position in a window or upon a show case or counter, to the casual observer it will appear as though the article had been removed from the carton and arrangedin superposed re lation therewith, and when considered 111 eoniuncti'on with theadvert-ising matter appearing upon the surfaces of the carton and the panel, aiiordsan original and attractive advertising display, w thout necessitating the use of the artlcle itself, wl'n'ch' smanu- .factured for sale to theretail jtrade. As is well known, the exposure of manyjcommodities in store windows or show cases to the effects of the sun and light results in a de' terioration in the quality of the commodity which frequently entails an appreciable financial loss. While I have, for the purposes of illustration of the present improvements, shown the display panel in the familiar form ofnietal' tube, such as thatin which shaving cream, tooth powder and similartoilet preparations are usually vended, it is of course manifest that this panelmay be fashioned in numerous other shapes for the. purpose of advertising, in conjunction with a carton or container, for various other commercial articles. Also, as I have indicated in the drawing, the closure flaps 11 for the ends of the carton may likewise havesuitable advertising matter printed thereon.

"From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, manner of use'and' several advantagesof my invention will be clearly and fully understood. The device may of course be produced in various sizes, but in every case, for the purpose of enabling the casual observer to obtain a complete realization of the character of the commodity advertised, the size of the carton and the display panel will be greatly exaggerated in comparison with'the actual size of the article and the carton in which the same is vended. Vhen the display device is not in use, the several walls of the carton may becompactly folded as seen in Fig. 4 by simply pulling the tabs 13 and the flaps 11 outwardly and then collapsing the carton body. In such collapse of the carton, the supporting extension 16' will fit neatly within the opening 17 of the carton wall 8 as clearly shown in Fig. 4. Thus, it will be appreciated that a large number of the collapsed display devices may be compactly arranged within a relatively small storage space. ,As the device in its entirety is formed from a single sheet of material and may be cut out and arranged in condition for use by means of a few minor operations it willbe appreciated that the invention canbe manufactured and sold or furnished gratis by the manufacturer to retailers, at a very. small cost. 7

In the preceding description and the accompanying drawing I have disclosed one practical embodiment of 'the invention, which, however, may likewise be exemplified in numerous alternative constructions. Accordingly the invention as herein claimed is to be considered as inclusive of all legitimate equivalents for the various elements employed as well as other contemplated arrangements thereof, 'whichfinay satisfactorily accomplish the desired results.

' I claim:

1. A display device comprising a complete carton fora single articleof merchandise having a panel extending along the longitudinal edge of one of its walls and disposed in the same plane therewith, said panel being formed and superficially marked to represent a fictitious article presumably adaptedto' be containedwithin the carton, and thereby simulating the said'article arranged in juxtaposition to the carton.

2. A displaydevice comprising a collapsie ble carton complete in itself and having hingedly connected body walls, an additional panelintegral" and" rigid with one of said walls and disposed in the plane thereof, the conformation of said panel cor esponding to that of a fictitious article presumably adapted to be contained within the carton and thereby simulating the article arranged in juxtaposition to the carton."

A display device comprising a collapsi- V ble carton having hingedly'connected body walls, a panel' integral and rigid with one of said walls and projecting from one longitudinal edge thereof, the conformation of said panel corresponding to that'of' a fictitious article presumably adapted to be-coni tained within the carton and thereby simu lating the article arranged in superposed relation to the carton.

l. A display device comprising a carton complete in itself for the reception of a single article and a relatively immovable panel simulating a fictitious article presumably adapted to be contained Within said carton and projecting from one longitudinal edge of the carton at the juncture of adjacent walls thereof, and in fixed juxtaposed relation to the carton.

5. A display device comprising relatively movable body walls hingedly connected to each other along one of their longitudinal edges, and adapted to be angularly arranged relative to each other when the device is disposed in display position to form a rectangular closed carton, and a rigid display panel integral with one of said walls and projecting in the plane thereof from the hingedly connected edges of said walls.

6. A display device comprising a collapsible carton consisting of a single sheet of material scored at spaced points to provide a plurality of hingedly connected walls, one end of the sheet of material being cut to provide a panel integral and rigid with one of said walls and having a marginal contour conforming to the contour of afictitious article presumably adapted to be contained within the carton.

'7. A display device comprising a parallelogrammatic body structure constituting a completely closed carton of exaggerated size, and a display panel adapted to be arranged in juxtaposed relation to said structure and simulating in outline and superficial marking a fictitious reproduction of the marketable article presumably adapted to be contained within said carton.

8. A display device comprising a parallelogrammatic collapsible body structure constituting, when in display position, a completely closed carton of exaggerated size, and a display panel rigid with one wall of said structure and simulating in outline and superficial marking a fictitious reproduction of the marketable article presumably adapted to be contained Within said carton.

9. A display device comprising a parallelogrammatic collapsible body structure constituting, when in display position, a completely closed carton of exaggerated size, a display panel rigid with one wall of said structure and simulating in outline and superficial marking a fictitious reproduction of the marketable article presumably adapted to be contained within said carton, and another Wall of said structure having means extending in a plane at right angles to said panel to support the device in display position.

10. A display device comprising a collapsible body structure formed from a single. sheet of material and having relatively movable walls adapted to be arranged to constitute a completely closed carton of exaggerated size, and a fictitious reproduction of the marketable article carried by one of said body walls in projected relation thereto and presumably adapted to be contained within said carton.
