UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
LAWRENQE E. GONNELL Y OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-ITALF TO WILLIAM v, CONNELLY, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO.
STEAM-GENERATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 16,1920.
To all whom it may-concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE E. CON- NELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Generators; and I do hereby declare the following to-be a full, clear, and exact description of the inventlon, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains, to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
This application is a continuation in part, of the application filed by me February 20, 1918, Serial No. 218,261.
This invention relates to steam generator furnaces and improvements 1n the arrangement of bafiie plates hereinafter explained and pointed out and illustrated in the accompan ing drawing, in which The boiler furnace with my invention installed therein.
In this drawing A indicates the muddrum of a water-tube boiler of the Stirling type; A, A and A indicate upper drums Which are in circulatory connection with the mud-drum A by'means of banks of tubes B, B and B and with each other by means of banks of tubes B and B; all of usual construction. The drums "and banks of tubes are inclosed in a boiler setting comprising front and back walls C and C, side walls C and cover C D indicates the usual fire-wall at the rear ends of the furnace grates D, extending from the bottom C of the furnace to the mud-drum A, in the usual at the rear side of the bank of tubes B said-"bafile pllate being preferably curved as shown, so t at the space between it and the gure is a sectional view of a steam.
mud-drum will be substantially uniform at all points.
The upper. edge of the bailie plate Gr is suitably secured in a plurality of clamps H which are clampedaround the rear series of the bank of tubes B so that the plate Gr will be suspended from said clamps so that its lower edge will not extend to thebottom of the pocket F. .The plate G is provided with suitable openings through which the tubes of the bank B pass. Behind the bank of tubes B, and extending upwardly from the clamps H, and upper edge of the plate G, is a bafile wall E which does not reach entirely to the drum A; and behind the rear bank oftubes B a baffle-wall E extends from the drum A downwardly.
J indicates the smoke exit; K and. L indicate doors through one of the side walls G into the chambers K and L formed by the dividing or barrier wall F between the, fire wall D and rear wall C, so that ashes and dust can be removed therethrough from the chambers K and L.
In operation the fire-gas travels through the furnace chamber as indicated by the arrows on the drawing, and is prevented from passing around the lower edge of the baflie wall E by the baffle plate G and barrier wall F; the material in the. pocket F in which the lowerjedge of the plate G is embedded forms a yielding seal around the edge of the plate G, and prevents the bypassing of fire-gas at that point, so that it must pass upwardly over the upper edge of the baflle wall E and ashes and dust which mud-drum A and bafile-plate G into the chamber L',-thus rendering it unnecessary to clean out the space between the baflles E and E on the top of the drum A.
Having thus shown and described the construction and operation of my invention so as to enableothers to utilize, the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a water tube steam generator, a boiler setting containing a fire chamber in the front portion thereof, a lower or mud drum, a fire wall under said drum, a rear upper drum, a rear bank of tubes connecting said mud-drum and said rear upper drum, another upper drum in front of said rear upper drum, a bank of tubes connecting the same with said mud-drum, a baflie wall behind said last mentioned bank of tubes, the lower end of which is in spaced relation to said mud-drum, a bafile extending from the lower end of said first mentioned bafiie wall in spaced relation to said mud-drum transversely through said rear "bank of tubes, and means to prevent the fiowof fire-gas around the edge of said last mentioned baflle, substantially as set forth.
2. In a water tube steam generator, a boiler setting containing a fire chamber in the front portion thereof, a lower or muddrum, a fire-wall under said mud-drum, a rear upper drum, a rear bank of tubes connecting said mud-drum and said rear upper drum, another upper drum in front of said rear upper drum, a bank of tubes connecting the same with said mud-drum, a bafiie betweenvsaid two banks of tubes the lower end of which is in spaced relation to said mud-drum, a barrier wall behind said fire-wall. the upper edge of which is in I spaced relation to the rear bank of tubes, a
bafile extending from the lower end of 'said first mentioned bafile wall in spaced relation to said mud-drum transversely through said rear bank of tubes to the upper edge of said barrier wall, substantially as set forth.
3. In a water tube steam generator, boiler setting walls containing afire chamber in the front portion thereof, a lower or muddrum, afire-wall under said mud-drum, an upper rear drum, a bank of tubes connecting said mud-drum and said upper rear drum, another upper drum in front of said upper rear drum, a bank of tubes connecting said last mentioned upper drum with said muddrum, a baflie wall between said banks of tubes the lower edge of which is in spaced relation to said mud-drum, a barrier wall between said fire-wall and the rear boiler setting wall, having a pocket in the upper edge thereof, a baflie extending from the lower edge of said first mentioned bafiie tansversely through said rear bank of tubes, and into the pocket in the upper edge of said barrier wall, and means to yieldingly seal the edge of said baflle in said pocket, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
