UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL KYLE, OF HYDE PARK, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE- SHOVELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,320, dated November 26, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL KYLE, of Hyde .Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illito increase its capacity, and to shield the hand in using, as will presently more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shovel made with the improvement. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line pm of Fig. 2.
Like letters of reference made use of in the several figures indicate like parts.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with particularity, making use in so doing of the aforesaid drawing byletters of reference thereto.
General Description. A represents the body of the shovel or bottorn. B is the handle. The shovel-bodyA is made of any proper metal, formed, as shown in the drawing, with flaring sides, which curve around at the heel of the shovel in circular form. C is a flaring, horseshoe-shaped guard or partial cover, of metal, joined to the flaring sides of the body, extending from the sides in over the shovel-body to partially cover the same, and extending down from the heel for about half the length of the body. This guard or partial cover is secured rigidly to the shovelbody, and by its recurvature serves to brace and strengthen the same materially, while at the same time it serves to retain the contents perienced with fire-shovels, of coals and ashes falling back over the heel of the shovel upguard and shovel-body are joined firmly together by any of the Well-known means, or the whole may be cast in one piece of metal.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The hand fire-shovel, substantially as described, made with flaring sides and. an inwardly-flaring horseshoe-shaped guard, 0, as and for the purpose specified.
. SAMUEL KYLE.
