Description
G. M. IRWIN.
Tops for Molasses Pitchers.-
NO. 133,317, Patented N0v.2t`;,1872.
W' y j,
'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE M. Ilt-WIN, OF BIRMINGHAM, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOPS FOR MOLASSES-PITOHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,317, dated November 26, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. IRWIN, of Birmingham, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tops for Molasses-Pitchers 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description proceed to describe more fully its con struction.`
In the accompanying drawing which forms part of my specification, Figure l represents an ordinary molasses-pitcher provided with my metallic top. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same; and Fig. 3 represents a vertical transverse section of the band, rim, and lip prior to giving the lip the desired outward curve.
In the accompanying drawing,Arepresents the molasses-pitcher. B represents the metallic top, which consists of the band O, haring rim D, and curved lip e.
The top is in all respects constructed in the manner described in Letters Patent No. 120,-
748, grantedto me November 7,1871. Ithen,
by means of suitable dies or other tool, curve the lip e outward, as represented in the ac companying drawing.
By curving the lip e as herein described, the lid f can be made lower and with less concavity on the under side of it, whereby less stock is required in constructing it, enabling the manufacturer to make a cheaper top, and one of a different form than that represented in Letters Patent No. 120,7 48, hereinbefore cited. The curved lip e gives to the top an increased commercial value, it being considered bymany the more desirable form of lip for pouring. The curved form of lip affords better facility for cleaning the pitcher A.
Having thus described my improvement, what I claim as of my invention is A new article of manufacture, viz., a metallic top for molasses-pitchers, said top consisting ofthe band O, aring rim D, and lip e curved outward, in contradistinction to a vertical lip, said lip and top edge of the rim C being covered by the lid f', as herein described.
GEO. M. IRWIN.
