WOLOOTT J. PARMELEE, OF FORT PLAIN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ADELLIA A. PARMELEE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF CARRlAGE-AXLE BOXIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,475, dated April 1, 1873; application filed February 28, 1873. V
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WOLCOTT J. PARME- LEE, of Fort Plain, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Making Carriage- Axle Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents the two sections composing the die in which the axle-boxes are made. Figs. 2 and 3 show the blank. Fig. 4 shows by a cross-section at w a the shape of the blank when prepared for the die-section. Fig. 5 shows by a cross-section the axle-box in the die-sections. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section through the die and axle-box, showing a mandrel therein. Figs. 7 and 8 are views of the finished axle-box.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The object of this invention is to produce an axle-box from a single wrought-iron or steel blank, as I will now proceed to describe.
The following description of my invention will enable others skilled in the art to understand it.
In the accompanying drawing, Figs. 1 and 2, A A represent the two halves of my die, in each of which is the concavity for giving the final shape to the axle-box. The two semicircular concavities are for centering the mandrel or core, as shown by Fig. 6. The semicircular concavities are for forming neck 0 of the box with recesses d d for producing ears d d thereon, and the semicircular concavity a is for producing the barrel or body of the box B. A blank, B, with steps 0 0 and a tongue, a is stamped out of metal and shaped between suitable dies, and then bent upon a mandrel, so as to present in cross-section the shape of the letter U, as shown by Fig. 4. This bent blank B, properly heated, is then adjusted into the recesses in the lower die, and the upper die is brought down forcibly upon it, which brings together the edges of the blank, and welds them on the core or mandrel shown in Fig. 6, they finishing the hub-box. The mandrel which is used in the die consists of a barrel, a two circular enlargements, e 0 and a handle, 0
It will thus be seen that I produce a hubbox complete out of a single piece of metal, and from a blank, represented by Figs. 2 and 3, which blank is thicker at 0 than at any other portion, for the purpose of affording the necessary amount of stock to form theears d d. 7
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The stepped blank B, of the form described, from which to produce an axle-box, as set forth.
2. The die sections A A and mandrel a c 0 combined, for producing from the blank B an axle-box, substantially as described.
' WOLCOTT J. PABMELEE.
