7 T0 all-whom it may concern:
' Be it known that 1,1WILLIAM Gmson, a subject of the'King of GreatBrltam and Ireland, residing at Belfast, Ireland, have inventedcertam' new and useful Improvements Relating to Ring-Spinning Apparatus, of which tion. k 1
This, invention relates to apparatus for the wet or dry spinning of fibers, suoh for example as flax or cotton fiber's,-0f the class having a movable ring capable,- under the action of the yarn, ofrolling eccentrlcally in a groove in the fixed ring or ring-plate and its object is to improve the construction of such apparatus. 7
Under my invention, I provide a fixed member or ring which serves as an anti-ballooning device and also acts as an automatic drag on the yarn. The fixed member or ring, which co-acts with the'rmg plate or builder plate to form the annular groove for the usual movable ring, is so shaped as hereinafter described that there can be, practically, no accumulation of gummy or wet deposit from the yarn nearits inner surface or near the space between the anti-ballooning ring and the movable ring, thereby keeping the thread path free from dirt. The anti-ballooning ring or member has a slit in it which facilitates the easy laying and piecing of the yarn these operations being also assisted by the provision of a disk on the spindle, or turning therewith, having a slit or slits therein for holding the yarn in such manner that the thread may be l'aid on without stopping the spindle.
the following is a specifica- In order that the invention may b'eclearly understood I have hereunto appcndedan explanatory sheet of drawings, whereon:--
Figure 1 shows the device with an empty bobbin on the spindle and the thread in position when starting to spin. 7 v Fig. 2 shows the bobbin filled and the builder plate in its top position ready for dofling. 'F Fig. 3 is a plan view corresponding to Fig. 4 is a plan view corresponding to Fig. 2.
. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view of the slotted portion of the anti-ballooning ring and the builder plate showing the shape of the slit at top and bottom which allows for the spinning spindle being rotated right or left as desired while it insures that the yarn :will-not, accidentally, enter the slit the" ring Referring to the drawings wls the-spmnmg spmdle, b the bobbin, c
the builderplate and'cl the-movable ring;
-The movable ring is accommodated in an annular-recess 0Z3 formed by, or between,- the ring-fand thebuilder plate' a; .The ring f is extended upward to form. the antimallooning ring ,1 who-seinner wall or also acts asan automatic drag "odthe ,urface i yarns; The-surface may be plainor f'covcred With sultable material to give" the required dragging efl'ecton and: (or) polish to the yarn. The outer side f ofthe ring 7 is sloped, as shown, to give a top edge f of theleast possible thickness so that. the gummy and'wet deposit from the yarn will gravitate down the slope to the bottom of the ring f thereby keeping the thread path free from I dirt and this may be further insuredby the movable drag ring d being within therecess d where it is constantly kept free from the dirt which the thread on-touching the ring, deposits on its top side.
A thread laying'and piecing slit, F, is provided in the ring f, and, in. the builder plate, there is a corresponding slit 0, while a. disk 9, secured to the spindle, has diametrically opposite slits g and 9 All of said slits are provided for the convenient and ready laying on, or piecing, of the yarn.
The slits in the disk 9 holdthe yarn so that the laying onscan be efi'ected'while'the spindle is running. A brake can be applied to the spindle at is. The slit g is used when the spindle is rotating in the direction of the arrow as and the slit 9 when the spindle is rotating in the opposite direction. The top i of the slit f in the ring 7 is made with a portion f thinned off at one side as shown in the detail view at Fig. 5, while, at the bottom and opposite side of the slit, the pen v 'tion f islikewise thinned off as shown in Fig. 5 and, further, the slit f 'is also'angled as shown at Fig. 1, thesefeatures being all 1 designed to prevent the yarn catching at y when'running in the direction of the arrow in and at 3 when running in the opposite direction. The angle of the slit also prevents centrifugal force acting on the end of the yarn and carrying it out of the ring f and it permits the yarn to drag on the inner wall or surface of the ring 7. In order to prevent rust about the thread path agun metal or otherrustless ring it isqinserted between the ring and the Builder plate 0.
The ring it could be reversed when Worn at one, side by the frictional contact of the ring (I. V
' "r call y' opposite slits therein, a builder plate In addition to its anti ballooning efiect, the extension f of the ring f has the further advantage that it prevents spray being thrownout thereby conducing to greater.
cleanliness in the spinning operation.
HavingnoW fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I f a V 1. Ring spinning-apparatus compr sing a spindle, a slitted disk, on said spindle, a
builder plateya movable ring, and a fixed ring of conoidal formation, said builder" plate and said fixed ringhaving laying and piecing slits therein.
"'2. Ring spinning apparatus comprising spindle, a disk on-the spindle ha'vingdiamethaving a straight slit therein, a movable ring, and a fixed ring of conoidal formation havlng an angular sllt thereln.
3; Ring spinning apparatus comprising a spindle, a slitted disk on said spindle, a buil'derplate, a movable ring,vand a fixed ring of conoidal formation, and' fsaid builder plate having laying and piecing slits therein.
4:. Ring spinning apparatus comprising a spindle, a slitted disk on said spindle, a builder "plate, an' annul ar-ring, and a fixed ring of oonoidal formation provided with an annular recess for sa d ring,,sa1 d bullder plate-andsaid fixed r ng haVmg laymg-and,
