,UNITED sTATEs P y u IRANK LAROCHE,- oF HAMPSTEAD, LONDON/ENGLAND. 'c
kTo all whom t may concern:
' vBe it known that I, FRA-NK LA ROCHE,- a
citizen of the French Republic, residing at Stanley House, Stanley Gardens, Hampstead, N. W. 3, in the county of London,
that the. spindle is vertical or approximatelyvertical-edrives the differential directly .through theV intervention of a worm and worm wheel, or'other suitable gearing.
It is found iii practice with vehicles of` lthis description that theIv mechanism is very `likely to become clogged-with dust and thelike, and that thevobject ofmy invention is to provide a morey elicient construction which prevents' the liability of such clog- ,25
ging and enables the whole driving mechanisni between the motor spindle andthe driven axles to be kept perfectlysupplied with lubricant. y
According to 'my invention I provide a differential of any known. type for driving ythe divided rear axles vofthe vehicle. This differential is driven from the spindle ofthe Velectric, motor by means of suitable bevel gearing, a worm and worm wheel or the like, and the whole of this mechanism 'including the differential andthe bevel gearingor its equivalent is inclos'ed in the casing .containing or intoY which the motor spindle passes, .the 'motor being preferably mounted symmetrically `with relation to the-breadth of the vvehiclefand so that Vits driving spindle vis vertical.` 1 v And in order that -my said invention may be better understood I "will nowproceed'to describe they saine with reference to the ac companying drawing in which Figure l shows a sideV elevation .of fan .invalid `chair with my invention adapted thereto.
Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic elevation of the rear axle showing the motorl and casing.
Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic section through the casing at rightangles to the axle. Y
Fig. 4 is alongitudinal section of the cas-f ing 'a.nd" di ferential to aV greatly enlarged scale.

ATENT OFFICE. i
The same letters of referencev are employed to denotethe same parts in all the views.
L shows an 'invalidi chair. battery. c is the motor. The spindle of the worm wheel which is keyed to the casing p yof, the differential, such casing carrying the usual bevel pinions a gearing with-the corpinionsV le at the ends of they responding 'bevel divided shafts s.
Ao gthe storage eisal Q is, casing inclosing the whole inechaf'` i nisin, within which the differential rotatesl suitable bearingsbeing providedl which may take the iorm-v of bearing sleeves v' located within suitable recesses in the casing. The
" ends of the casing may be extended VintoV tubes r reaching to the wheels'within which the axles s. rotate, or the spindles s may alone extend tothe wheels. Y
The casing Q is -inadein halves, bolted to gether so yasto inc'losethe shown, and lubricant is supplied to the in,-
" terior of the casing in any appropriate manner so V'that the whole of the gearing'- is kept 'perfectlylubricated, while at the ,same time dust and dirtare kept awayfrom the working parts. n
, Although I have shown', by way of ex? ample an invalid chair, withvmy arrangement of mechanism adapted thereto, I kdo notwish to confine myself to this particular vehicle, as Iinay adapt the invention tov any otherelectrically driven road vehicle.v
WhatI-claim as'myV invention and desire mechanism, as
to secure by Letters j'Patent of the United States of America is :`V
In an electrically propelled motorvehicle,
casing inclosing said differential, a worm wheel rigidly secured to oneend of said casing, a vertical spindle located symmetrically .vitliV respect tov the breadth ofthevehiclaa vworm on said spindleengaging said worm wheel, a casing inclosing saidditl'erential andwoim and yworm wheel and an electric Vmotor located above said lastinentioned cas` ingforydriving said spindle` substantially as and'for the-,purpose set forth.
