Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. JENSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transmission-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improved form of construction primarily ada ted for use in connection with the gear shif ting devices of a motor driven vehicle whereby a retainer is provided for retaining the shifter devices in their adjustedposition; an interlock is provided for retainin one device in its adjusted position during't e movement of the other and providing a lock for precluding the operative movement of either of said devices when in a predetermined position.
The invention consists primarily in a simplified construction and arrangement of parts for accomplishing the above set forth ends and wherein a member is provided which is normally in cooperative engagement with members associated with t e shifter devices, the function of said members associated with the shifter devices being dependent upon the position of said member. The invention further consists in the ar rangement of the various elements in such manner that when the shifter devices are locked from operative movement the removal of the gear case cover is prevented until such time as the locking-mechanism is released by an authorized person having a proper key, 'at which time the members forming the invention may be disconnected. permitting the removal of the gear case cover and access had to the mechanism interiorly thereof again.
With the above,'mentioned and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts preferred embodiment of my invention, with parts positioned to retain the shifter devices in their adjusted position and in which position the shifter devices are capableof being locked from operative movement.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, disclosing the position of the shifter devices with the members cooperating therewith engaged respectively in the neutral stops thereof.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, disclosing one of the shifter devices as being operated, whereby the members cooperating therewith rovide an interlock to retain the operated s lifter device in its adjusted position.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1, taken at right angles thereto.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3, disclosing the members associated with the shifter devices in the position to engage the stops of saiddevices, after one of said devices has completed its movement illustrated in Fig. 3.

The bores 2 are connected by a bore 4 disposed between the same, and'said bore is intersected preferably,-
but not necessarily midway of its length by a slot or channel 5. The elements heretofore described are illustrated as being incorporated in the gear case, but it is readily apparent that in such cases where the shifter devices are positioned within the case cover the arrangement of the bores and channels are equally as well adapted for such installations.
On corresponding faces adapted to be moved, into alinement with theopposite ends of the bore 4, shifter devices are provided with stops or recesses 6 and 7, the recesses 7 being of greater depth than the recesses 6 and in the present disclosure are adapted to lie at opposite ends of the bore 4 when the shifter devices are moved to position .the power transmission elements associated therewith into what iscommonly termed, neutral position. On the operative move ment of one of the shifter devices 3 to posi tion one of the stops 6 in register with one end of the bore 4, the device so positioned in the, present illustration is in what is commonly termed a speed position, either forward or reverse.
The shifter devices 3, in the present disclosure being illustrated in the form of rods, are selectively operated, preferably by the movement of a shaft lever 8, although, it
'will be readily understood that any suitable mechanism for selectively operating the rods and which is Well-known in the art may be employed.
Mounted within the bore 4 and adapted one to coiiperate with each of said shifter devices are the members 9 of a length when their adjacent ends are in contact equal to the distance between said shifter devices 3 plus the depth of one of said stops 7, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
In the present illustration, these members 9 are illustrated as plungers having the tapered ends 10, to seat within the respective stops 6 or 7, and are formed in their adjacent faces with the adjacent ends of the slots 11, the lower portion of the end wall of each of which is inclined or beveled as at 12. While this form is disclosed, it is readily apparent that other shapes of members may be .used, either elongated and having rounded ends or spherical in formation, the only requirement being that when said members are in contact at their adjacent points they will be of sufficient size to equal the distance.between said shifter devices plus the depth of one of the stops 7.
Resting on the case 1, .is a suitable cover 13 of any desired construction, in which is preferably mounted the lever 8 and said cover is provided with a ,vertical bore 14 open at its upper end and adapted to register at its lower end with the upper end of the slot 5. Mounted to reciprocate within the bore 14 is a locking barrel mounting head 15, of a size corresponding to that of the diameter of the bore 14 and within a chamber in the upper end of the same is mounted any suitable form of wellknown type of co-actuated lock 16, the same being preferably of the type embodying a locking pin 17 which is adapted to project through an opening 18 in the'side of the head 15 and when said head is manually depressed, as hereinafter described, to
project intoa suitable recess 19 in the sidewall of thebore 14 adjacent its upper open end. The lower edge of the head 15 is preferably slotted as at 20, said slot being intersectedby a pin receiving bore 21, opening at the opposite side edges of said head, and within which is adapted for mounting a retaining pin 22 inserted in position through an opening in the side wall of the bore 14 and which opening is normally closed by a threaded cap or plug 23.
Depending from the under s1de of the head 15 with its upper end received within the slot 20 and pivoting about the pin 22 is a member operating plate or device 24 which extends between the adjacent ends of the members 9 and is received in theber 24 is of a width to contact with the bases of said slots 11, when the outer ends of the members 9 are in cooperative engagement with the stops 7.
A spring 27 is positioned to normally force the head 15 to roject. upwardly from the outer end of the ore 14 and is disposed with its body coiled about the plate 24 with its upper end lying in contact with the underface of the head 15- and its lower end resting on the upper surface of the case 1 surrounding the slot 5.
The parts being assembled as described, the device operates in the following manner:
With the shifter devices 3 in neutral position as in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the tension of the spring 27 forcing the plate or device 24 upwardly, causes the inclined surface 26 of the'lower end 25 thereof to ride on the inclined surfaces 12 of the members 9 and yieldably force said members outwardl'y to retain the outer ends thereof within the stops 7. On the selective operation of one of said devices 3, as for example in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the movement of the desired member to position one of the gears controlled thereby into opera'tive position causes the member 9, associated therewith, to be expelled from the stop 7 against the tension of the spring 27, which movement of the member, when the outer end thereof is riding on the surface of the operated shifter device 3 between adj acent stops 6 and 7 causes the inner end of said member 9 to contact with its cooperating member 9, as illustrated in Fig. 3. During' this movement, it will be apparent that an interlock is provided between the operated and idle shifter devices whereby the idle shifter device is held in its neutral position. During this operation, it, will be apparent that the head 15 is drawn downwardly, due to the forcing-together of the members 9, but the downward movement of said head is not suflicient to permit the into the position as illustrated in Fig. 5, the tension of the spring 27 operates the plate or member 24 to yieldably -se arate the members 9 to retain said shifter evices in their adjusted position, as illustrated in Fig. 2. Until such time as the operated shifter device is again moved or returned to neutral position, it will be apparent that the idle shifter device cannot be operated due to the interlock formed between said shifter devices 3 by the members'9. On the return of said operated shifter devices to neutral position, as in Fig. 2, said devices are capable of being locked from operative movement, and to accomplish this purpose, it is only required that the. Head 15 be downwardly pressed against the tension of the spring 27, at which time the portion of the member 24 above the reduced portion 26', will be forced into said slots 11, completely'filling the same as in Fig. 6 of the drawings, and precluding inward movement of said members 9. When in its depressed position the latch 17 engages the depression 19 and locks said member against all released movement until such time as the controlling key for the locking barrel 16 is employed to retract the plunger 17.
It will be apparent that on the movement of the head 15 to locked position the bore 21 formed therein will be out of register with the opening controlled by the plug 23, thus precluding the detachment of the head 15 and plateor device 24 which would defeat the objects of this invention by permitting the removal of the cover 13 from the case 1; however. when said head is in released position the pin 22 is capable of being removed from the bore 21.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. In combination with a shifter device provided with a. stop, a me-mbercooperating therewith, means cooperating with said member and capable of manual movement to one position. automatic movement to another position, and movement by the operation of said member to a third position, whereby said means when in its first position locks said member in engagement with said stop, when in its second position yielda-bly maintains said member in cooperation with said stopand when in its third position yieldablv retains said member in cooperation with said shifter device, and a. lock associated with said means for locking the same when moved into its first position.
2. In combination with a pair of shifte devices each provided with a stop, a pair of members cooperating therewith and positioned between the same, means extended be said members operate, a spring for operating said means to maintain the wall at one side of said reduced area in contact with said members to normally separate the same, said means adapted for operation to position the wall at the other side of said reduced area between said members to lock said shifter devices from movement, and a lock for locking said means in its latter position.

plate extending between said members and provided on its opposite side edges with the lower end of said plate being of a width to preclude the upward removal of the same from between said members, a locking head connected with the upper end of said plate and adapted to lock the same in its depressed position with its reduced area removed from cooperation with said members, a spring coiled about said plate and bearing against said head for restoring the plateto unlocked position and to maintain the lower wall of said notches in contact with the under surface of said members whereby said members-are yieldably maintained to contact with said devices.

In combination with a gear case, a pair of shifter devices mounted therein a-ndeach provided with a stop, a pair of members positioned between said devices for cooperation with the stops thereof, a gear case cover, means carried thereby and extended between said members, said means provided with a reduced area within which said members operate, a locking head connected with the lock the same in its depressed position with said reduced area removed from cooperation with said members. a spring for'restoring said means to unlocked position to maintain upper end of said means and adapted to one wall.of said reduced area in contact with said members, whereby said members are yieldably maintained in contact with said devices, said means and head adapted for disconnection on the movement of the means to unlocked position whereby the removal of the cover from the case is permitted.

In combination with a pair of shifter devices provided with stops, a pair of members positioned between the same and slotted at their inner ends, the combined length of said members when the adjacent ends are in contact being of a length approximately equal to the distance between said shifter devices plus the depth .of one stop, a longitudinally movable plunger extend-ing between said members and received within said slots, said plunger having an enlarged lower end lying below the inner ends of said members and formed on its upper surface with inclined walls for cooperating with the base of said slots, said enlargement precluding the removal of said plunger from between said members by an upward movement, spring pressed means for operating said plunger to maintain the beveled walls thereof in engagement with said members to separate the same to maintain the outer ends thereof in contact with said devices and means for locking said plunger from movement.

In combination with a gear case provided with a pair of shifter devices therein, a pair of movable members positioned between the same, a movable plunger extending between said members and having an enlarged portion lying below the inner ends of said members, said enlargement precluding the removal of said plunger from between said members by an upward move ment, a case cover provided with an opening within which said plunger operates, spring pressed means for operating the plunger to maintain said members separated to retain said devices in their adjusted position, and means for locking said plunger to the case cover to preclude removal of the cover from the case and to preclude operation of said shifter devices.

An apparatus for separating members positioned between a pair of notched shifter devices to retain said shifter devices in their adjusted position and to lock the same from movement, the same comprising a movable plunger extending between said devices and provided with a contracted portion within which the adjacent ends of said members are received on the operation of said devices, means for locking said plunger when moved to a position to preclude inward movement of said members when the same cooperate with said device notches, and 'yicldable means for automatically moving said plun er in an opposite direction on the release 0 said locking means to position a portion of the plunger to engage said members to yieldably separate the same and maintain them seated within said notches to be expelled therefrom on the movement of said devices.

An apparatus for separating members positioned between a pair of notched shifter evices to retain said shifter devices in their adjusted position and to lock the same from movement, the same comprising a longitudinally movable elongated plunger extending between said members and having an enlarged lower end, said plunger provided above said enlarged end with a contracted portion within which said members are received on the operation of said devices and formed with beveled walls connecting said enlarged end' and contracted portion, yieldable means for normally maintaining said plunger with said beveled walls in engagement with said members, and means for locking said plunger when moved to position the body thereof between said members.

An apparatus for separating members positioned between a pair of notched shifter devices to retain said shifter devices in their adjusted position and to lock the same from movement, the same comprising a movable plunger extending; between said members and having an enlarged lower end lying below said members for cooperation with adjacent portions of said members, means for yieldably maintaining the said enlargement in engagement with said adjacent member portions to separate said members and maintain the outer ends thereof in contact with said devices, and lock controlled means for precluding the operation of said plunger.
11. An apparatus for separating members positioned between a pair of notched shifter devices to retain said shifter devices in their adjusted position and to lock the same from movement, the same comprising a movable plunger extending between said members and having an enlarged portion lying below the inner ends of said members for cooperation. with adjacent portions of said 'members, said enlarged portion precluding the removal of said plunger from between said members by an upward movement, a spring associated with the plunger for operating the same to maintain the enlarged portion thereof in engagement with said members, to yieldably separate the same and to maintain the outer ends thereof in contact with said devices, and means for locking said plunger from movement.
