IHHTEEDEVIOE CONTROL-LOCK AND LOCK-OPERATING- MEANS.
To all w ham it may concern:
268,191 filed )cc. 24, 1918; and to tilt devices illustrated in' lictters iatent Nos. 1,296,397, and 1,296,398? i to me March 4, 1919; The' pgrt'lt fliffl improvement in the presentcons'truetion bein in the provision of a shifter device lock w ich is in operative position during such time as the vehicle clutch is engz'iged, is released on the disengagement of the clutch, and in connection with which is operatively disposed a member serv'ingas an interlock and retainer for the shifting devices during the operative movement thereof. To provide a locking construction the same is capable of being locked er precluded from operative movement only at such times as the shifter devices are moved to a predetermined position.
With the above mentioned and other 0bjccts in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, propor. tion. size and lninqigdetails of construction within the scope'otlthe chiiins nmv he re sorted to without dc iarting from the spirit or sacrificing any 0 the advantages of the invention. r
In the drawings,
Figure 1 illustrates a view in side elevation of one embodiment of my invention disclosing the clutch-operating pedal and the connection between the same and the locking bolt. 7
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken centrally through the shifter device lock illustrated in Fig. i
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept, 30 1919 Application filed June 25, 1919. Serial No. 306.700.
bolt in its full depressed position and disclosing the interlocking member operated thereby.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to a. Wlfil one of the shifter devices moved from its position as illustrated in Fig. e and wherein the locking bolt is precluded from down ward movement to the end of its strolre.
Fig. 6 is a diagrammatic view with the shifter devices and bolt in position illustrated in Fig. 5. x
Referring more particularly to the several views of the drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts, the numeral 1 indicates a. suitable casing of any well-know type, with;
inv which is positioned any suitable form of releasing clutch member, the same being operated by the actuation of a pedal or lever 2 either of the band or foot operated type, the present universal form bein of the foot operated type. The lower eng of the pedal is illustrated as cooperatin with a shaft 3 carrying a crank 4:, to w 'ch is givotally connected a tubular sleeve or menier 5.
To the rear of the case 1 is secured in any suitable manner a. gear case for housing 6, of any suitable type, for containing the variable speed power transmitting gears or mechanism of the motor driven veh1cle,and the upper open top of the case is preferably closed by a cover 7, with which is assoch ated the gear shifter devices 8, preferably in the form of rods arranged in arallel spaced relation. While the case 6 1S illustrated as being connected directly to the member 1. and the cover 7 thereof oarryin the shifter devices-8, it is tube understoo that the gear case 6 may be a unit ofitself, and if desirable the shifter devices 8 nay be incorporated directly therein insteadbf the cover therefor.
The shifter devices 8 are illustrated as being provided in adjacent faces with a plurality of .stops, the stops being illustrated in the form of depressions 9 and 10, the de ressions 9 being of a greater depth than t 1c depressions 10, for the hereina ter described purpose. a
The shifter devices 8 are supported at opposite ends in suitable bores or channels and the cover 7 is formed in its body vvith a transverse channel 11, a portion of which connects said shifter devices 8 provh ing, a walled opening between the same... The
compression springs 30,.held under tension by the adjustment of nuts or other means 31. Thus it will be apparent that when the looking bolt is precluded from operative movement as hereinafter described, the clutch,
due to the positioning of the springs 30 be tween the ends of the sleeve 5 thereof and the nuts 31, is capable of operation independently of the operation of the bolt, and means are provided permitting the clutch elements to be adjusted to insure proper engagement and disengagement thereof dependent upon the throw of the lever 2 without requiring the adjustment of the nuts 31 to insure the proper operation of the looking bolt.
As illustrated, the locking bolt is of a length considerably less than that of the bore 19, and in the upper portion of said bore is mounted for manual movement independently of the movement of the bolt 20 a, longitudinally movable bolt locking plunger 32, the upper end of which, when the bolt is in operative or released position is adapted to project beyond the upper end of the bore 19, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The bolt locking plunger 32 is preferably formed centrally of its lower end with the cup or recess 33, in which is received one end of a. coil spring 34, the lower end of which surrounds a. pin 35 projecting centrally from the upper end of the bolt 20 and receivable in said bore 33, said spring normally maintaining the bolt locking plunger 32 in its raised or inoperative position and the bolt 29 depressed. The bolt locking plunget 32 is guided in its movement and pro eluded from rotation by a suitable set or guide screw 36, projecting into the bore 19 and into a vertical groove 37 in the body of the longer 32.
cans are provided for locking the bolt locking plunger 32 in its depressed position at such time as the bolt 20 is in its full. depressed position as illustrated in Fig. 4, this full depressed position being preferably when the transmission mechanism 0 erated by the shifter devices, is in what is commonly termed neutral or non-power transmitting position, and in accomplishing this result, I prefer to employ the following mechanism: Mounted in a bore 38 is a plungeilocking pin 39, one end of which is normally forced outwardly into contact with the surface of the bolt locking plunger by the action of a coil spring 40, and said pin on the full depression of the bolt locking p mger 32 is received at its outer end in a recess 41 in the surface of the bolt locking plunger 32, but should the bolt locking plunger 32 be depressed during such time as the bolt 20 is in engagement with one of the stops 10 as illustrated in Fig. 5, the movement of the locking plunger will not be sufficient to permit the lower edge of the recess longitudinally movable 41 to clear the lower edge of the tongue 42 of the plunger 39. thus it is impossible in the construction illustrated to lock the shifter devices when the same are moved to place the transmission gears controlled thereby into power transmitting position. In releasing the locking pin 39 I prefer to employ a key operated barrel 43 of any well known type, the lower end thereof carrying an eccentricall y disposed pin 44 operating in a depression 45 in the upper surface of the pin 39, thus on the rotation of the barrel. 43 the pin 39 will be retracted in its bore 38, and the tongue 42 thereof will be disengaged from its recess 4-1 permitting the spring 34 to restore the bolt locking plunger to its normal or inoperative position.
In my present construction, it will be apparent, that I have provided a means which is operated on each operation of the clutch member when the sam is mqved to released or disengaged positio to permit the selective control of the shifter devices, and during such selective operation of the shifter devices the device not operated is precluded from movement by an interlock and during the interval of time between the operation of the clutch and the selective movement of said shifter devices, said shifter devices are retained from accidental movement. have also provided a means whereby the locking bolt is capable of bein locked from released movement only at ch tinlie as the shifter devices are in a preilctprmined position, this position in the pres nt embodiment of the invention being W at, is commonly termed neutral.
Having thus described my invention what I claim 15:
