THEODORE A. PERDIUE, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
LOCK FOR MOTOR-VEHICLES.
Application filed .Tune 26, 1919.
To all lwlw/ln t may Concern:
Be it known that I, Tnnononn A. Pennine, a citizen of the United States, and a resident. of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and uscful Improvements in Locks Jfor Motor-Vehi cles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in locks for motor vehicles, and has for its object to provide a lock of the character specified, of the permutation type, for locking the transmission controlling lever of a motor vehicle in neutral position.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved lock in place,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the lock detached,
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section,
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of F ig. 2 showing the lock locked,
Fig. 5 is a similar view showing it unlocked,
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the locking bolt,
Fig. 7 is a similar view of one ot the locking pins.
The present embodiment of the invention is shown in connection with the H plate l of a motor vehicle, being designed to lock the transmission controlling lever 2 in neutral position, and to prevent if desired the full movement of the reverse level' 3. The improvement comprises a plate lhaving its under surface cut to tit to the upper face of the H plate, and this plate has depending lugs 5 which fit in slots of the H plate, to
' prevent lateral movement of the plate 4 with,
respect to the H plate.
The plate 4 has a notch 6 extending laterally inward from one side thereof, for receiving the transmission controlling lever 2, and in line with the center of the lever when fully in the notch plate has a longitudinally extending bore 7, the lever having a transverse opening 8 registering with the bore, when the lever is in place in the notch.
This bore is adapted to receive a locking bolt 9 having a knurled head 10 for con venience in manipulating the bolt, and this bolt has oppositely arranged series of transverse grooves 11, which are adapted to register with vertical openings 12 in the plate, the said openings extending fromthe upper face of the plate to below the level of the locking bolt. These openings are adapted Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 26, 1919.
Serial No. 306,863.
to receive locking pins 13, each of which has a head as shown abutting the upper face of the plate 4, and the pins of each series are held in place by a dowel pin 1-'1 arranged in an opening in the plate 4t, the locking pins having annular grooves 15 for receiving the dowel pins.
Each lockingpin is provided with a rounded recess 16 intermediate its ends, which are at the level oiE the bore for the locking bolt, and these recesses are adapted to be turned into register with the bore ior the locking bolt to permit the free passage ot the locking bolt in movement of withdrawal or insertion.
It will be obvious that when all of the locking pins are turned to cause the recesses 16 to register with the bore 7, the locking bolt may be withdrawn or inserted, moving 'lreely into or out o'l" the bore. When however these pins are turned to bring the recesses 1G out ot register with the bore 7, the locking bolt if out cannot be inserted, and it' in cannot be withdrawn. Each locking bolt has in the top of its head a transverse groove or kert 17, the heads being circular, and the keriis being chords o'tl the circle. 'Ihese kerfs do not all bear the same relation to the recesses 16.
Referring to Fig. 2 it will be seen that eight locking pins are provided, four on each side of the locking bolt, and the kerfs are so arranged that when the bolt is unlocked, the kerls will show a certain definite pattern, certain of the kert's being perpendicular with the bolt, others parallel therewith and others may be at angles o1 4,50. In Fig. 2 the pins are shown arranged and unlocked, while in Fig. 3 they are shown locked. The pins may be arranged to be turned by the linger or thumb or with a tool, as for instance a screw driver.
The plate l cannot be engaged with the slots of the H plate until the lever 2 is in neutral position, and it will be seen referring to lfigs. 1 and 3 inclusive that a notch 1S is provided tor receiving the reverse lever 3. This notch prevents complete movelnent of the reverse lever from one end of the H plate to the other.
I claim:
1. ln a motor vehicle, the combination with the H plate and the transmission controlling lever, of means 'for locking said lever in neutral position, said means comprising a plate having lugs depending into the slots of the H plate and having a notch registering with the neutral passage of the H plate when the lugs are engaged with the said pins being journaled in the plate and extending into the bore and having recesses registering with the bore when the pins are in certain positions, the locking bolt having recesses registering with the pins.
2. In a lnotor vehicle, the combination with the H platey and the transmission controlling lever, of means for locking said lever in neutral position, said means co1nprising a plate having lugs depending into the slots of theH plate and'having a notch registering with the neutral passage of the H plate when the lugs are engaged with the slotsr and adapted to receive the lever, said plate having a bore for a locking bolt extending transversely of the notch, and the lever having an opening registering with the bore when the lever is in the notch, a locking lbolt movable in the bore, and a series of Vlocking pins for locking the bolt in place.-
