HENRY LAUGHLIN, 0F HORTON, MICHIGAN.
GATE-HINGE.
Application filed August 16, 1919.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HENRY LAUGHLIN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Horton, in the county of Jackson andv State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Grate-Hinge, of which the following is a specilication.
The 'present invention relates to gate hinges; its principal object is to provide a hinge which will permit the gate to be slidable longitudinally to a partly opened position as well as to support the gate for swinging movement.
A second object of the invention is to provide a gate hinge which will permit the gate to be moved longitudinally and which when being closed or extended only requires the gate to be moved a certa-in distance, the gate traveling to full closed position by gravity.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a gate hinge which includes a swinging trackway which is engageable with the gate after the ,same has been moved longitudinally to open position to assist the swinging trackway to support the gate and to revent the same from movin@` accidentally in the traclrway.
Janother general object of the invention is to provide a gate hinge having the above characteristics which is simple in construction, which consists of few parts, and which may be manufactured and sold at minimum cost.
"With the above and other objects and advantages in mind, the invention consists of the combinations of elements constructions l and arrangement of parts, operations and general assemblage all of which will be hereinafter' enlarged upon and set forth in the appended claims, the invention being illustrated in the attached drawings, wherein Figure 1. is an elevation of my improved hinge assembled with a gate, the gate being shown in an extended position and parts 'thereof broken away;
Fig. 2. is an elevation showing the gate in closed position; and
Fig. 3. is an elevation taken at the left end of Fig. 2, parts of the post being broken away, the gate being shown in open position.
Referring to the drawing in detail the gate is designated at 5 and is of usual construction.
The hinge consists of a pair of parallel rods the forward ends of which are bent downwardly at an oblique'angle andare con- Specification of Letters Patent.y

such pintles extending from a standard 16 i the lowermost bar having its inner end curved downwardly and terminates in a laterally extending bearing 17 disposed upon one of the pintles 15.
There is provided an angularly disposed brace rod 18, the inner end of which terminates in a bearing 19 engaged upon the lower pintle 15 while its opposite end is engaged in the adjacent coupling or union 12 that connects the rods 10 and 11 together. An enlargement 2O is formed adjacent of the outer extremity of this rod 18 and terminates in a forwardly projecting extension 21. This extension is engageable with a lug 22 formed upon the plate 23 and attached upon the gate 5 when the gate has been moved longitudinally to partly open position.
Supported in a hanger 24 on the gate 5 is a grooved roller or wheel 25 which engages the rods 10 and traverses the same upon the longitudinal movement of the gate.
This embodiment rof the invention is illustrative 4only and it will be understood that the same may be modified in many respects l and that such limits of modification are only governed by what is claimed.
wWhat is claimed is:
' 1. The combination with a gate and a roller disposed adjacent the inner end thereof, of a swinging traclrway supporting the roller, a plate carried by the gate provided with an outstanding lug and an extension carried by the traclrway upon which the engaged lug rests when the gate has been moved to one side of the traclrway.
2. The combination with a gate, of a swinging traclrway comprising a pair of parallel rods having their inner ends supported for pivotal movement, the forward end'of the rods being extended downwardly at an oblique angle and in parallel relation, a connection between the other ends of the rods, a brace rod having one end supported for pivotal movement and its other end connected with the trackway, and a roller carried by the gate and engaged betweenthe rods and adapted to traverse the same and in contact with both.
3. The combination with a gate and a roller Carried thereby, of a pair of parallel hinged bars engaged by the roller, a connection at the forward end of the rods, a` ln'ace connecting the rear ends of the rod,
the connection and brace limiting the movement ot the roller in either direction, and a brace rod having one end hinged and its other end attached to the forward end of the lower-moet hinged rod.
4. The Combination with a gate, of a swinging trackway comprising a pair of parallel rods having their inner ends supported for pivotal movement, the forward ends ot the rods being extended at an oblique angle and in parallel relation, a roller carried by the gate and movable between said parallel rods, means to limit the movement of said roller in said rods, and means to prevent 'the gate from moving accidentally in the traclrway when supported at the ends of the rods remote from the forward or oblique angled ends thereof.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aliiXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY LAUGHLIN.
