Description

' B. A. CRUMLEY.
HORSESHOEING DEVICE.
APPLICATION man AUG-5, 1919.

WITNESS: INVENTOR. I %Z.9 Q I fi wig w ATTORNEY.
BIRDIE A. CRUMLEY, OF HYLTON, TEXAS.
HORSESI-IOEING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2, 1920.
Application filed August 5, 1919. Serial No. 315,484.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BIRDIE A. GRUMLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hylton, in the county of Nolan and State of T eXas, have invented new and useful Iniprovements in Horseshoeing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for preventing a horse from moving its leg when being shod or otherwise treated, and comprises means for holding the leg in position with the fore part bent at the knee.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the device may be ad justed to hold the leg bent at any desired angle.
Still another object of the invention is to provide means for permitting the device to be applied while the leg is straight and to catch and hold the leg in raised position when the horse raises the leg.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the severalparts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is'a view showing the device applied to the fore leg of a horse;
Fig. 2 is a view showing the invention ap plied to the hind leg;
Fig. 3 is an edge view of the device itself;
Fig. 4c is a cross sectional view.
As shown in these views the device consists of two straps of iron indicated by the numerals l and 2, which are pivotally connected together at their inner ends by a bolt 3. The outer ends of these straps are bent at right angles and curved as at 4 to fit the leg and adjacent the inner end of the strap 1 I secure a curved piece 5 for engaging the leg adjacent the knee thereof. As shown, this piece 5 is oppositely arranged to the curved ends 4. These curved parts are padded as at 6 and the curved parts at the ends are provided with straps 7 which are provided with buckles so that these curved parts may be strapped around the leg of the horse. These straps may be riveted to the curved parts or connected thereto in any de sired manner. The part 1 has pivotally connected thereto an arc-shaped piece 8 which is slotted as at 9, one wall of the slot being provided with teeth 10. This piece 8 has its free end engaging a guide loop 11 carried by the strap 2 and a bolt 12 passing through said guide 11 and strap engages the slot 9 and the rack formed by the teeth. A spring 13 tends to hold the arc-shaped piece with its rack part in engagement with the bolt 12. I prefer to form a plurality of bolt holes in the straps so that the parts may be adjusted to suit animals of different sizes.
The device may be applied with the leg in extended or straight position by moving the straps into parallel position and buckling the straps around the leg as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The horse is then caused to lift his leg which will cause the two straps to move about their pivotal point. The bolt engaging the rack on the arc-shaped piece will prevent the return movement of the parts and thus the horses leg will be held in bent position. .In this way the shoe may be applied or the leg treated as necessary. When it is desired to permit the horse to straighten his leg the arc-shaped piece is raised by the hand to free the bolt of the rack so that the two straps may assume their parallel position. By placing the bolt in the desired tooth of the rack, the leg may be held at any desired angle.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A device of the class described comprising a pair of bars pivotally connected together, means for connecting the bars to the horses leg, a guide on one strap, an arc-shaped member pivotally connected to the other strap and adapted to engage the guide, said member having a slot therein having one wall provided with a rack, a bolt carried by the guide for engaging said slot and rack and a spring for holding the arc-shaped member with its rack in engagement with the bolt.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
