HINGE.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,321, dated July 24, 1855.

To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, JOSEPH PLEGAR, of Birmingham, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement upon Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.

Letter a represents a full View of the hinge open.

b is the bolt on the pin part of the hinge.

c is an end view of the bolt showing thel when freed from the cup or socket. Tlie internal arrangement of the upper part of the hinge embraces three distinct features: lst, its cup or socket for the reception of the bolt; 2nd, its bearings for the pivot of the bolt, in this position the bolt being completely protected from accident or weather.

The advantages of my arrangement are, lst, the positive accuracy of this' hinge through the chilling process, the cup or socket being made of uniform size and shape by the metal ruiming around chills that are turned to gage; 2nd, the'durability of this arrangement; the inclosure or cup or socket becomes hardened by the chilling process; also there is a smooth surface produced' by which the free action of the hinge is aug-v mented; also its security by its inclosed position from rust or the liability to accident; 3d, the certainty of fastening shutters open, as the cup falls over the pin, which enters the socket and thereby dispenses with other fastenings on the wall which are always uncertain.

lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is* Making a bolt on the pin part of the hinge and a cup or socket in the upper section of the hinge to receive the bolt, as herein set forth.
