SULFUR-FEED HOPPER.
Application filed July 29,
To al l'w'hom'z't may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY S. CL'ERo, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Gretna, in the parish of Jefferson and State of Louisiana, have invented anew and Improved Sulfur-Feed Hopper, of which the following, is a full, clear, and exact description. I I
My invention relates to sulfur feedfh'oppers of the kind used in connection with furnace's' for bi'irning iron .py'ri"tes--or other sulfur ores, orin'connection with furnaces used in making sulfuric acid and. various other chemicals by aid of-ca'talysis.
More particularly stated, my invention comprehends a hopper and box carried thereby, so arrangedthat, as a whole, the device may' be readily mounted upon the furnace and so arr'anged'th'at the heat of the furnace melts the sulfur contained Within the hopper which thereupon flows in small quantities into the furnace.
Reference is made to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like reference characters indicate like parts throughout all of the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of the furnace, shown partly in elevation, and partly broken away, as equipped with my device.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of my improved v sulfur feed hopper and is taken on the line 22 of Fig. 3 lookingin the direction indicated by the arrows.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of my device.
A furnace is shown at 4: and is provided with a combustion chamber 5 and with doors 6, 7 these parts being of the usual or any desired construction. The furnace is provided with a face plate 8 and with a front wall 9. The furnace is also provided with a niche 11 and with a lip 12 formed from the face plate 8 and extending slightly upward into the niche 11.
The sulfur feed hopper is shown at 13 and has generally the form of a hollow wedge. It is provided with a lip 14 of considerable length, this lip having a suitable form to hook over the lip 12 so that the Weight of the feed hopper rests mainly upon the lip 12 and so that the hopper, as a whole, may be readily lifted away from the furnace.
The hopper 13 is provided with a top 15 connected thereto by hinges 16. The hopper is further provided with a slanting wall 15 so formed as to rest neatly against a pro- 'Speicifieation' of Letters Patent.

truding portion 10 of the face plate 8, this protruding portion being so formed that the weight of the hoppertends to press the hopper tightly against it. The hopper is further provided with a hole 18 disposed near the bottom.
A trough 19 is provided with a sulfur groove 20 and'with an upwardly extending flange 21. Bolts 22 extend through the flange 21 and hold the trough 19 rigidly in position upon the hop er. The trough is so positioned that the su fur groove 20 is practically inregist'ry with the hole 18.
The furnacewall'9 is provided with an opening 17 of substantially frusto-conical form,- as may be understood from Fig. 1.
The operation of my device is as follows: The sulfur feed hopper, as a whole, is mounted upon the face of the furnace inthe manner indicated in Fig. 1. That is to say, th'edevice is, raised into position so that the lip 14 of the hopper is caused to hook over the'lip 12' of'the'furnace, the lip 14: and hinges 16 thus extending into the niche 11. The weight of the hopper brings the face or surface 15 of thehopper into engagement with the protruding portion 10 of the furnace which has a slant, as indicated in Fig. 1. The hopper clings tightly against the protruding portion 10 of the face plate, owing to the fact that the hopper. tends to rockupon the lip 12 as a center.
The furnace may be used for'burning pyrites or other sulfur ores, or for consuming various fuels with which sulfur is to be burned for any purpose, as for instance, in connection with a Glovers tower or for the manufacture of sulfurous acid and various sulfur compounds. Sulfur, usually in the form known in this art as brimstone, is placed within the body of the hopper, the lid is closed and the hopper is placed in the position as above described. The furnace being in action, the heat of the furnace melts the sulfur which tricklesdown and following the trough 19 is discharged within the furnace. The discharge is rather slow owing to the fact that the size of the hole 18 is limited and that the sulfur feed hopper is not exposed to a high degree of heat.
This device presents a considerable number of advantages. It does not necessitate the doors 6 or 7 being open or the furnace disturbed in any other way. The sulfur feed hopper, when in position, completely closes anism shown as variations may be made therefromwithout departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my 1nvention,what I claim as'new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
' 1. In a sulfur feed hopper, the combination of a hollow body member provided with a lip whereby the body member may be suspended, said body member being provided with an opening, and a trough mounted upon I said body I member and provided with a groove in registry with said opening.
2. A sulfur feed hopper, comprising a hollow body member provided with a discharge opening, a longitudinal trough provided with a flange, bolts extending through said flange and engaging said body member for the purpose of holding said trough in position, said trough being provided with a groove in registry with said discharge openin V In a sulfur feed hopper, the combination of a hollow body member provided with an opening, a trough carried by said hollow body member and disposed ad acent to said opening, said hollow body member being provided with a lip whereby said hollow body member may be suspended, and a cover hinged upon said hollow body member.
4. In a sulfur feed hopper, the combination of a furnace provided with a face plate and with an opening, said face platebeing provided with a niche, and a hollow body member provided with a portion extending into said niche and with a lip for engaging said face plate at the edge of said niche in order to suspend said hollow body member upon said face plate, said hollow body memher being provided with a discharge open- 7 mg, and a trough mounted upon said hollow body member at a point adjacent said discharge opening, said trough extendingjecting portion which has a slanting edge,
a body member connected with said face plate and provided with a portion resting upon the projecting flan e, said body IHGID'.
her being provided wit an opening, and a trough mountedupon said body member and disposed against said opening, said trough extending through said opening 1n the furnace wall. V
