This invention relates to new and usetu'l principal object of the in-ventionre'sides in the provision of a" device which is particularly adapted for wood boring nd on which the drill is slidably mounted-inorder that the same may be adjusted to bore through various thicknesses.
Another object of the-invention is to provide a device in which thedrin is'mounted ona'vertically sliding carriagewhich is suspended yieldably on suitable spring sus-- pending elements which are adapted to be adjusted so that the tension of the springs may be varied to meet varying? requirements.

Formed atth e lower end of the tube 21'of the frame is an arm 28' provided with an. aperture 29in which the chuck and r0 tating pinion therefor, is mounted. A'suitable ear 30 is formed on the tube 24 while a similar ear "31 is formed on the tube 23. The cars 30 and 31 however, extend in planes at right angles to each other and extend outwardly from their tubes so that their axes are positioned at right angles with relation to each other. Thelowerend of the adjustable rod 19 is connected to theear 31 gage the standard to allow for free vertical movement thereof.

Rotatably mounted within the bore 29 in the arm'28, is a hub 34 of a pinion 35 which meshes with the gear 27 previously referred top This pinion has secured to its undersidea plate 36-a'nd the plate and-bodyof the pinion form a groovein which the, walls of the :opening 2am seated. 'Aitapered bore .37 extends through 'the pinion 35- f and .hub 34. and fitted in said :bore is a chuck 38 comprising a pair of arms 39 having the jaw members 40 formed at their lower en'ds.
The upper endsof the arms are connected by the apertured bight portion 41 through which a bolt; 42 extends beyond the upper face-of the pinion 35 and is provided with a wing nut -43 by means of which the various degreesof'tightnessmaybe had. The jaw members 40. are adapted to receive the shank of the drill 44 and it will thus be seen that whenthe drive wheel 26 is rotated, the shaft 25 will rotate the gear 27 driving'the pinion 35 and causing the chuck 3.8 to revolve, thereby rotating the drill bit.
In order to yieldably-force the carriage V 20 downwardly into the work, a' spring structure designated generically by the numeral 45 is provided and has one end confnected by means-of a rod 46 to a bracket 47 secured; to the upper horizontal arms 7 of the .rodsZ6. The lower end of the spring structure is connected in any suitable manner to the ear 30 and'itwill thus beseenthat, 'the rear end of the carriage will be yieldably forced downwardly towardthevwallsi The forward end of said carriage is forced downwardly by a spring structure designated by the numeral- 45* which is.v constructed in a manner similar to the spring structure above mentioned.

What is claimed is: 1.
