IMPROVEMENT IN PATTERNS FOR CHANNELING LEATHER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,1d9, dated November 19, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL GOLGHER, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Patterns for Channeling Patent-Leather used in the Manufacture of Harness; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to that mode of ornamenting patent-leather in which a groove is cut in the enameled surface of the leather of sufficient depth to receive a line of ornamental stitching, and which is technically known in the trade as channeling.
Referring to the drawing, Figure 1 represents the pattern laid upon a piece of patentleather of the desired size and shape, ready for the channeling-tool; Fig. 2 is the reverse side of the pattern, showing the raised guard to hold the patent-leather firmly in its place; and Fig. 3 represents the same in section on line b b.
A in the figures denotes the metallic portion of the pattern, usually of thin sheet-iron or other suitable metal, having its inside edge out to the desired form of ornamentation. B denotes the guard, corresponding in shape to the edges of the patent-leather to be channeled, usually consisting of a strip of leather or wood secured to the metal by rivets.
In the channeling of patent-leather for harness by the practice in vogue previous to my invention, a piece of thick paper or thin cardboard perforated with small holes, indicating the desired design, was placed upon the article to be channeled, and fine dust or powder scattered upon the paper, which, penetrating the perforations, and adhering to the oily surface of the patent-leather, left, upon the removal of the paper, an outline of the desired ornamentation, which was followed by the channeling-tool of the operator. Much loss of time and material, from the slipping of the paper or knife of the operator, was incident to this mode of operation. By the use of my improved patterns the piece of patent-leather to be ornamented is placed in a pattern of the desired form, being firmly held in place by the raised guard having corresponding edges with the patent-leather. The channeling-tool of the operator, resting against and guided by the ed ge of the metallic pattern, is then applied to the enameled surface of the leather, and the work is accomplished with superior uniformity and quickness, and with no liability to loss from the slipping of the pattern or channeling-tool.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved metallic patterns to serve as a guide for the channelin g-tool, when provided with raised guards to hold the leather to be operated upon firmly in place, substantially as set forth.
