BRIDLE-REIN.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,306, dated July 24.-, 1855.

To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, KINGSTON GODDARD, of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bridles or Reins for the Better Management and Control of Horses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which represents my improved curb-bridle applied to a snatlle bridle and compound snattle and curb bit.

The curb and snaflie bits have long since been combined, with a separate and independent bridle for each, making a mass of reins in hand very troublesome to the rider or driver and producing confusion when a horse takes a sudden start, particularly with persons not possessed of presence of mind.

The object of my invention is to avail of the combined snaftle and curb bits and avoid the inconvenience and danger arising from the use of two separate reins. And my said invention consists in making the snaftle rein or bridle tubular for a portion of its length on each side and passing the curb rein through such tube, the curb rein passing out on each side a short distance from the bits and to make the attachment of the two reins one to the lever of the curb bit and the other to the snatlle, the curb rein also passing out of the tubular snaflie reinnear the hand and forming a loop which can be` readily grasped, in case of danger, to control the curb bit.

In the accompanying drawings a, represents one of the levers of the curb bit of the usual construction with a ring b, to which is secured, in the usual manner, one end of the snaflie rein c, and with another ring d, at the lower end to which is in like manner secured the curb rein e. The opposite side in every particular is made in the same manner, From about nine inches (more or less) from the bit on each side, the snatlie rein is made tubular as represented at g, in the drawings, with the tubular part open on the outside at f, for the reception of the curb rein e, which slides freely in the said tube and comes out again at h, near to the place where the snaffle rein is grasped by the hand, the said curb rein forming a loop i, which is always near to the hand of the rider or driver, ready to be grasped in case of danger.

The tubular snatHe rein is made with the tubular part suiiciently large Ato receive freely t-he curbrein Which should be cord like for that purpose, and of sufhcient thickness to resist the strength of the pull. In this way it will be seen that by my improvement the rider or driver, for ordinaryvpurposes, has but one rein in hand and that the snaflie; but in case of accident the loop of the curb rein is always convenient at hand for the control of the horse.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The arrangement of the reins substantially as herein described, by making the snaiiie rein tubular in part to receive the curb rein, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
