SHADE-FIXTURE.

Be it known that I, FRANK GnIsIUs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of l/Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shade- Fixtures; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention pertains to new and useful improvements-in shade fixtures, particularly those adapted to control the movements of a shade roller for maintaining the shade in various positions. 7
g The primary object of this invention is to provide an arrangement by which the roller of a window shade may be made to revolve in a direction to roll the shade up on the same when a cord is pulled, and the revolutions of said roller may be stopped at any point at any time by simply carrying f the end of the cord toward or away from the adjacent edge of the shade and out of a vertical line extending from the pulley element of the arrangement. In this connection provision is made for permitting the shade to readily unroll from the roller to any desired length and then to be surely stopped and held.
A further object of the invention relates to the provision of an interchangeable pulley which may be used on either end of a shade roller, and with either a right or left hand bracket. I
An additional object of the invention is to construct certain other elements of the device from sheet metal whereby the cost of manufacture will be materially decreased.
With these objects in view the invention resides in the novel features of construction. combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter very particularly described and claimed and shown in the drawing, wherein:

fore, the most important, and likewise the most expenslve element 1n this lnventlon 1s adapted for use at either end of a roller in connection with cooperating elements which may be less expensively manufactured. Reference is made to the pulley 1, it having annular flanges 3 and 4t. A trunnion 5' extends centrally from each opposite side of the pulley, and each of these trunnions is alike so as to make the pulley interchangeable. The'operation of the invention is substantially as follows: to lower the curtain, the
operator will grasp the lower portion of the cord 12 and permit the lower end of the shade to descend by gravity as it unrolls from theroller 7, letting the cord gradually slip through his fingers until the curtain or shade G has been lowered to the'point desired, whereupon he will carry the lower portion of the cord toward or away from the edge of the shade, which will cause the former to ride into either of the diagonal grooves. 13. Then upon rotation of the pulley, slightly in va proper direction, the cord will be clamped beneath said locking finger 9, as above explained. In raising the shade, the endless ,cord 12, after being released frombeneath the locking finger 9, is pulled in a direction which will cause a rotation of the roller 7 to wind up the shade, and after the bottom of the same has attained a proper height, the cord is again shifted to dispose it in one of the diagonal grooves 13 for subsequent clamping beneath the locking finger 9 ,The operations of raising and lowering the shade are practically identical, regardless of whether the pulley 1 is connected with the right hand end or the left hand end of the shade roller. In other words, in both cases the endless cord 12- is moved laterally into one of the grooves 13 when it is desired to retain theroller in one of its several, adjusted positions. The fact that the pulley is capable of use at either end of a shade roller, obviously greatly lessens the cost ofthedevice and reduces the number of being polygonal parts v-r rich it would otherwise be necessary to keep on hand.
Various minor changes may be made in the form and proportions of the several parts or the device to accommodate them for use on rollers of different types, or for other purposes, these changes being within the scope of the invention, as outlined inthe appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with a roller, of a bracket, a pulley having oppositely extending trunnions, one being 1ournaled in said bracket, the other being detachably fixed to one end of the roller, and a flexible operat ing member disposed around the pulley.
V 2. The combination with a roller, having a polygonal socket in one end, a bracket having a bearing opening, a pulley having oppositely extending trunnions, one being rotatory engagement in the roller socket,
and a flexible operating member disposed around the pulley.
