Be it known that I, PETER IV. SOMMER, a citizen of the United States, a resident of Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fenders for Farrowing-Pens, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to fenders, such as may be used for the protection of pigs at farrowing time.

' One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a partition for farrowing pens having a self contained fender to prevent the sows crushing the pigs.

A further object of the. invention is to provide a partition for farrowing pens, comprising a metal frame, preferably tubular in cross-section, having an open wire filler, and one or more fenders disposed longitudinally of the frame and having their opposite ends connected with the opposite end bars of the frame.

In the building of hog-houses, fenders that save the lives of suckling pigs are quite indispensable. Various types of hog-houses have been built and various forms of fenders have been provided. My invention permits of the building of hog-houses comprising inclosures formed of open metallic frames having a wire filler, the fenders forming a unit with one of the partitions, and includes longitudinally disposed bars located upon opposite sides of the frame and spaced a suitable distance therefrom, the respective ends of the fender-bars united in sections of couplings adjustably secured to the opposite end bars of the frame.

Referring more particularly to the preferred embodiment of the invention, disclosed in the drawings, the frame comprises the top bar 1, end bars 2 and 3 and the bottom bar 4. The top and end bars are preferably formed from a single bar, and the bottom bar has its ends secured tothe lower Specification of Letters Patent.

ends of the end bars by being Welded or otherwise suitably secured thereto. I prefer to construct the frame 'from tubular bars, although other forms may be used, and the frames may be of various sizes. lVithin each frame is secured the wire-filler 5, comprising the longitudinal or running wires 6 and the vertical stay or picket wires 7'. At 9 the fender-bars are bent inwardly toward the frame extending to a point in proximity to the end bars 2 and 3 of said frame, and the ends of said fender-bars are secured in the tubular bosses 10 of, the sections 11 of suitable couplings, which are secured to each other, and adjustably secured to the bars 2 and 3 by means of securing bolts 12.

By the arrangement shown the fenders 9 may be secure to the frames at desired heights, and the spacing of the fender-bars from the frames will prevent the sows crushing the pigs.

That I claim is:

1. .In a device of the character described, in combination, an open rectangular partition frame having a mesh wire filler, and a fender-bar spaced from the frame and having its opposite ends connected to the opposite end bars of said frame.

2. In a device of the character described,

in combination, an open rectangular partition 7 frame having a mesh Wire filler, a pair of fender-bars, one on each side of said frame, the opposite ends of said fender-bars connected to the opposite end bars of said frame.

3. In a device of the character described, in combination, a frame comprising top, bottom and opposite end bars, a fender-bar extending between said opposite end bars in spaced relation to the frame and having its end portions directed inwardly toward said end bars, and means for connecting the opposite ends of said fender-bar to said opposite end bars of said frame.

4. In a device of the character described,

in combination, a frame comprising top, bot tom and opposite end bars, a pair of fenderbars, one on each side of said frame, and coupling members for connecting the corresponding ends of said fender-bars together and With an end bar of said frame.

5. In a device of the character described,

7 in combination, a frame comprising top bottom and opposite end bars, a mesh Wire filler in said frame, a pair of fender-bars, one on each side of said frame and spaced therefrom, the opposite ends of said fender-bars bent inwardly and extending toward an end bar of said frame, and coupling members adapted to have an adjustable connection with the end bars of said frame, the fenderbars having connection With said coupling members. I

6. A fender for farrowing pens, comprising a frame, a fender bar on each side thereof spaced therefrom, and sectional couplings embracing the ends of the frame, each section having a socket part to receive an end of a fender bar.

7. A fender for farrowing pens, comprising a frame, a fender bar on each side thereof spaced therefrom, and bar-supporting members carried by the frame and provided with diverging sockets to receive the ends of the fender bars.

8. A fender for farrowing pens, comprising a frame, a fender bar on each side thereof spaced therefrom, and sectional bar supporting members adjustab-ly embracing the ends of the frame for vertical adjustment, each section having an outwardly facing socket to receive an inturned end of a bar for fixedly supporting the same.

9. A fender for far-rowing pens, comprising a partition frame, and a plurality of fender bars, one on each side of the frame spaced outwardly therefrom and having its opposite ends directed inwardly and secured to the ends of the frame, said bars and their supporting frame constituting a rigid unitary device.
