UNITED s'rar PATENT oFnioE. 1
V ARTHUR LABAN, OF MACKAY, QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA.
omEMATOGRAPH-EILM' spoon.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 10, 1920.
Application filed September 27, 1918. Serial No.'255,977.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR LABAN, asubject of the King of Great Britain and'Ireland, residing at Mackay, in the State of- Queensland and Commonwealth of Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cinematograph-Film Spools; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in film or breaking ofi' the end; the objects of this invention are to provide means for facilitating the mounting of films upon the spools, more especially when renewing same during operating, by which they may be instantaneously attached to and released from the spools, also to eliminate the risk of damaging the films.
The invention consists in fixing on the wooden boss of a spool a sheet metal plate provided with two rows of teeth by stamping same and spaced to correspond with the perforations (usually termed sprocket holes) on each side of the film; or inserting in the boss two rows of pins, screws, nails or such like to serve as projections for engaging with the perforations on each side of the p film. In spools having a sheet metal boss by fixing on same, by soldering or otherwise, a
sheet metal plate as above described or stamping the teeth out of the boss itself.
To fully describe the invention, reference is now made to the drawings in Whicl1:
Figure 1, is a perspective view of the spool Iyyith one side partly removed to show-the oss.-
Fig. 2, plan of detached toothed metal plate.
Fig. 3, end elevation of same. 7 Fig. l, side elevation of same. A and A are thesides of the spool and B the wooden boss, C atoothed metal plate attached to the boss. 7
It has not been deemed necessary to illustrate by drawings the alternative method of inserting pins, nails, screws or such like in the woodenboss, instead of employing a detachable toothed plate, nor to illustrate teeth stamped out of the boss when said boss is of tubular sheet metal.
In operation the end of the film is placed upon the toothed plate and-one turn given to the spool when the film is instantaneously secured thereto and is instantaneously released when unwound without any risk of damage. What I do declare as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Incombination with a hub for film reels, a plate secured to the hub, and outstruck portions formed in the plate to provide projections for engagement with the perfora- I tions of a film.
Intestimony whereof, I ailix my signature. I
- ARTHUR LABAN.-
