cally to that class of tools where asingle instrunient is provided with a number of parts formed 1 and c'ombiiiedtogether to 1 pro duce a series of useful tools most commonly utilized by housewives and others in similar occupations.
An object of my invention is to provide an instrument combining several useful house hold implements in a single unitary cooperating structure that shall be eflicient and reliable as well asinexpensive considering the number of various tools embodied in a single structure.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of 0011- struction. and in the arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
This invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which:
Figure l is a side elevation.
Fig. 2 is an edge view.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation.
Fig. 1 is a cross sectional detail view of one of the tool implements taken on line 4 4: of Fig. 1.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, the tool preferably consists of two movable members 5 and 6 secured together by a pivot pin or rivet 7, one end of each of members 5 and 6 terminating in handles 8 and 9.
Preferably, these members are formed of sheet steel (as that material possesses great strength and durability) struck from dies. The end of member 5 opposite its handle 8 is provided with can opening device preferably formed integrally therewith, consisting of a jaw 10 provided with a beveled cutting edge 11, its outer end terminating in a can piercing point 12. To one side of jaw 10 extending parallel therewith, and spaced therefrom is an extension 13 provided with a depressed portion 14 forming a strengthening rib. The extreme outer end 15 of ex Specification of Letters' iatent.
ra-eenmai eb. 3, 1920.
tension 13 is bent at substantially right angles and at an inclination-to its bodyportion to form a j aw 16, one transverse etlge of said jaw being toothed a'sa't 17 "to form a fulcrum when the tool is used as a can opener, the opposite disposed transverse edge 18 being curved outwardly as clearly shown in the various figures of thedrawing,
' to form one member 19 of a pan-erpot lifting instrument, the other member 20 being formed on one end of movable member 6 which will be more particularly described hereinafter; j j
Jaw 16 is provided witha depression21 forming a strengthening rib, the vertically disposed parallel side edges 22, 23 from approximately midway between the two transverse edges being inclined downwardly and toward each other and terminating in a blunt point 24 as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. By forming the end of j aW 16 opposite to toothed edge 17 of member 5 into a blunt point, I am enabled to quickly engage the edge or rim of a pan in which a pie or cake is being baked without injuring the crust or cake, the point being in serted between the cake and the inner surface of the pan rim.
The outer portion of extension 13 is bent transversely and at an angle to its rear portion so that its longitudinal axis is in alinement with the longitudinal axis of the can cutting jaw 10, thus materially strengthem ing the extension when the instrument is used as a can opener.
The outer end of member 6 opposite its handle 9 is provided with an extension arm 25, the edge adjacent extension 13 being curved away therefrom. This outercurved edge of arm 25 is provided with a projection preferably formed integrally therewith and bent at substantially right angles to arm 25 to form a clamping jaw 20 adapted to cooperate with its companion clamping jaw 16 to form a panor cooking utensil lifter. The face of jaw 20 is concaved as clearly shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4 of the drawings for the reception of rib 21 formed on jaw 16 when the jaws are brought together, thus enabling the operator to maintain a firmer grip on a pan or other utensil when the tool is used as a lifter.
Movable member 6 is provided on its outer edge and adjacent to the pivotal point 7 with a bottle opening hook 28 which may be utiinner ends of handles 8 and 9 are bent at right angles thereto to form flanges 30, 31, segmental in form, the inner faces of said flanges being toothed or serrated as at 32 to form gripping surfaces. Member 6 is further provided with a'segmental flange 33, similar in all respects to flanges 30 and 31, said flange cooperating with the other flanges when the handles 8 and 9 are brought together. to form a circular jar top wrench. By means of the, above described wrench tops of fruit jars can be readily removed when desired.
After the above description the operation of the various well known tools or implements will be perfectly apparent without the necessity of further explanation. It may bestated, however, in the Way of pointing out the advantages of my combination tool'that such tool has been designed and constructed with a View to the attaining of the same results as the usual separate tools and to the proper balancing of the entire structure. Moreover, I have made the tool 1. it may be most efficient. That I claim is: I A combination tool, comprisingtwo members pivotally secured to each other, one of said members having a can opener formed thereon, said can opener consisting of a cut ting jaw and a fulcrum j aw disposed in parallel relation to each other, and the other easy and solid of grasn by the hand, so that r of said members liavinga jaw formed there- EBBE J.
