C. G. UDELL.
Improvement in Construction of Step-Ladders.
No. 132,938, Patented Nov.12,i872h %/a my A M. PHUTO'LIYHOGHAPH/C C0. NIMSBORNES PRUGESS.)
UNITED STATES-- CALVIN G. UDELL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF STEP-LADDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,938, dated November 13, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALVIN G. UDELL, of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented an Improvementin Brackets for Ladders, of which the following is a specification:
The presentinvention relates to an improved bracket to be used in combination with the stiles, top step, and bracing-frame of a stepladder, but more especially the step-ladder shown in the patent granted to me June 8, 1869. Its nature consists in casting solid to the bracket a projecting lug, which supports the spindle of one leg of the bracing-frame, and which is supported by a curved cap cast solid to the lug and to the bracket, the several parts being cast in a single piece to perform the functions hereinafter named.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved bracket. Fig. 2 is an inside elevtation of the same. Fig. 3 is a top ,view there- 0 A represents the bracket proper,-which is provided with holes 0 for fastening it to the stiles of a ladder in the usual manner, and with lugs and holes G G to fasten it to the top step K of the ladder, as shown in Fig. 3. 13 represents a projecting lug, which is cast solid to the bracket A by means of a cap or housing, J, its support. The lug B has cast solid to it a spindle or pivot, F, which passes through a hole in the leg I) of the bracingframe and holds it in position when a nut or washer is put on the end of the spindle, the projection of the part J being equal to the thickness of the leg of the bracing-frame. The function of the lug and housing, in addition to supporting the spindle F, is to prevent the end of the leg of the bracing-frame from splitting. This is accomplished by means of the angles E E, Fig; 2, acting as stops when'the leg D is swung to a certain distance in either direction; therefore the end of the leg requires no banding or riveting, and consequently a ladder can be made at less cost, while at the same time the joint is effectually housed in, so that nothing can catch against it, and it gives a good appearance and is strong.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The brackctcastin g A, having the housing J, spindle F, and angular stops E E for receiving and protecting the leg D, substantially in the manner specified.
