Be .it known that I, ARTHUR THOMAS ELLIS, a subject of the Kingdom of Great Britain, residing at 129 Castelnau, Barnes, London, S. W. in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to the Valves of InternaLCombustion Engines,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprises certalnimprovements in or relating to the valves of internal-combustion'engines, and refers to the.
I type in which a collar or member is screwed upon the stem of the valve against or upon which the valve spring is adapted to beer for the operation of the valve, and in which means adapted to be assembled substantially i Y laterally or transversely of the length of the valve stems are provided for normally preventing the collar from becoming un-,
screwed.
According to the present invention a spring bearing collar having direct screw connection with the valve stem is normally revented from unscrewim by means of a P e locking piece or member which is adapted to be assembled substantially laterally or transversely of the valve stem against a shoulder formed by grooving the annular face of the valve stem itself. The locking piece or member may be in the form of a" slotted and centrally apertured cone and the sprlngbearmg collar may have 'a cone shaped recess with which the 'con'ed lock ng piece is adapted to be engaged.
The locking member may be in the form of anapertured cone which is split into two halves and these halves maybe united by a' suitable spring or Wire so that same can readily be made to embrace the valve stem by opening the two halves against the action of the spring or said cone may be radially slotted to its central aperture to enable same to be engaged with the annular groove in the valve stem.
In order that this invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practice, reference may be had to the appended explanatory sheet of drawings, upon which i v Figure 1 illustrates in'sectional elevation a valve fitted according to the present in- 'vention.

The two parts of the supplementary split collar g are connected together by a spring h which is arranged so as to allow of the split collar being opened for the purpose of inserting it around the neck of the spindle, such spring being adapted automatically to close the supplementary split cone when in position.
For enabling the supplementary split collar to be readily placed in engagement with the neck of the spindle, the faces 5 of'the split at one'side of the-collar may be inclined to form. an inwardly converging mouth so that upon pressing the mouth against the neck of the spindle the two sides of thesupplementary collar will readily embrace the neck of the spindle.
The split on thereverse or hinge side of the supplementary collar may also be of form converging inwardly 'soas to allow the mouth on the opposite side of the split to more readily open.
A groove or recess may be provided around the outside edgeof the two parts of the supplementar collar within which the steel wire or ribbon spring 7;, may be inserted, which spring is so shaped as to embrace a substantial part of the circumference of the 10 split collar, any appropriate provision being made to prevent the spring from workin around the groove into a position in whic it would cover the mouth of the split.
The outer circumference of the main collar may be milled asat j to enable the collar to be more readily screwed, and holes is may be provided around the circumference for the insertion of any article such as a wire nail for assisting in turning the collar when compressing the spring.
That part of the spindle which is provided with a screw-thread is larger in diameter than the end part Z of the spindle to the extent of the depth of the screwthread, so as to allow the main collar when free of the screw tov slip freely over the remaining portion of the spindle.
The main collar may be provided with a sleeve portion 112. which projects into the end of the spring, and which sleeve is tapped in addition to the interior of the collar so as to afford a greater length of screwthreaded travel of the collar upon the spindle. In the arrangement shown, this 85 sleeve enables the collar to be engaged with the stem in circumstances in which the spring in its extended position projects below'the lower extremity of the screwed portion of the stem.

The action of releasing the valve is as follows The main collar is screwed along the spindle against the compression of the spring until the coned recess in the collar is clear In a modified embodiment oflthe present of the supplementary collar, which is then removed from the neck of the spindle, the main collar being then screwed the reverse way until clear .of engagement with the 4 again until its coned recess operates uponthe cone-shaped split collar, thereby gripping the split collar around the neck with The its outer face in engagement with the shoulder on the spindle.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a valve stem having a threaded portion and an unthreaded, diametrically reduced portion between the threaded portion and the inner end of the stem, a spring-bearing collar screwed on said threaded portion and having a conical recess opposite said reduced portion of the stem, and a locking member having a conical portion to enter said conical'recess, an opening to recelve said reduced portion and also I a slot leading from one s1de of said member to said opening to permit assembling and disassembling of said stem, collar and lockingmember.
2. In combination with a valve stem havv ing a threaded portion and an unthreaded, v
diametrically reduced threaded portion and t e inner end of the stem, a spring-bearing collar screwed on said threaded portion and having a conical recess opposite said reduced portion of the stem, and a locking member having a conical ortion to enter said conical recess, an opening to receive said reduced portion and also a slot leading from one side of said member to said opening to permitassemblin and disassembling of said stem, collar an locking member, said member compris ng a pair of sections and a spring flexibly connecting said sections together.
