5 The invention relates more particularly to such securing means comprising a collar of horseshoeshape having a lateral slot to enable it to be slipped laterally on to a conical portion of the valve stem and having a conical central aperture corresponding to the conical portion of the valve stem, the spring plate pressing against the said collar, which is accommodated in a circular recess in the spring plate, under the influence of the valve spring. According to the present invention the conical partof the valve stem is longer than the thickness of the horseshoe-shape collar and the slotin the collar is narrower than the diameter of the central aperture and only slightly greater than the minimum diameter ofthe conical part of the valve stem.
Two examples of the construction of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying draw ing, in which Figure 1 shows a valve in elevation, as assembled, with the spring plate or washer, and
Figure 2'is a plan view of the slidable collar.
The valve stem (1 in Figure 1 comprises a conical portion b, upon which a horseshoe-shaped collar c (Figs. 1 and 2), provided with a conical central aperture e and a lateral slot 2 extending from the central aperture to the outside, is mounted from the side. The collar 0 is held in its position by the spring plate or washer d, which is subject to the pressure of the valve spring 1,
and which is mounted upon the valve stem from above before the collar is put in position. The spring plate d has a cylindrical recess (1 corresponding to the external cylindrical surface of the collar and an outwardly extending flange 01,
against the underside d of which the valve spring I bears.
The slot e is narrower than the diameter of the central aperture e and only slightly wider than the thinnest part of the conical portion b of the 4 valve stem. The length of the conical portion b of the valve-stem a is greater than the thickness of the collar 0. This collar, therefore, can embrace more than half the periphery of the stem, since it is slipped laterally round the lower portion of the cone, and then pushed upwards towards the upper portion of the cone portion b. This construction has the advantage on the one hand that a better contact between the collar and'the valve stem is obtained, and on the other hand that the collar is automatically prevented from dropping out sideways until it is lowered to engage the thinner part of the conical portion b of the valve stem. The spring plate or washer d is here slipped over the collar 0 after the spring plate has been lowered to enable the collar to be pushed on to the thinner part of the conical portion 1) of the valve stem, the collar fitting into the recess (P, and being thereby prevented from lateral displacement, while the spring 1 forces the spring plate and collar towards the thicker part of the conical portion b, whereby the collar is wedged against the said thicker part.
If the valve is to be removed, the spring plate d is depressed, the spring I being compressed, the collar c is then lowered until it reaches the thinnest part of the conical portion 1) and is then re-x moved laterally, whereupon the spring and spring plate can be withdrawn upwardly and the valve is then removed downwardly.
What we claim is: i
A valve and valve stem, the end part of the valve stem opposite the valve being of greater diameter than a portion of the valve stem between it and the valve and the stem having a diverging conical portion extending from the said portion of the valve stem towards the said end of the valve stem, in combination with a collar having a central conical aperture and a slot extending from said central apertureto the periphery of the collar, said slot being narrower than the diameter of the central aperture and wider than the thinnest part of the conical portion of the valve stem, said diverging conical portion of the valve stem having a length exceeding the thickness of the collar by an amount to allow the collar to be passed over the thinnest part of the conical portion and a spring plate having a recess therein to receive said collar and an aperture for the valve stem.
