A is the head or top upon which the force is appliedfor driving the wedge into the timber. B is the point which is driven into the timber to separate or split the same.
My invention consists in making the point of the wedge which enters the timber wider than the body of the same, as shown at O.
A short distance above the point I make an offset or shoulder on either side, as shown at D D. As the wedge is forced into the timber the pressure causes the wood to close over these shoulders and thus prevent the wedge from jumping or being forced out by the pressure of the timber upon its incline sides, as is the case with the ordinary wedge made straight upon the edges, especially when the timber is frozen.
I do not claim. the wedge as my invention,
as I am aware that it is an old and well-known device; but I claim as my invention- Providing a wedge with offsets or shoulders near the point by making the same wider at or near the point where it enters the timber, as and for th e purpose set forth.
