JAMES M. BAILEY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLOWING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,891, dated November 12, 1872.
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES'IVI. BAILEY, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blowing Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptioii of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, which represents, in vertical longitudinal section, an apparatus constructed and operating after my general plan.
My invention consists in combining with a blowing cylinder one or more blowers for furnishing, through suitable passages and valves, intensified air to said blowing-cylinder, and thus increasing the volume of air so blown through the cylinder.
To'enable others skilled in the art to make and use myinvention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawing.
A represents a fan-case, in which a fanwheel, a, is caused to run with a high velocity. The air is drawn in by the wheel a through the eye I) of the fan-case, and driven with 7 great force and density through the passage B, which, dividing into two passages, (l D, extend, one to the top and the other to the bottom of the blowing-cylinder E, in which a piston-head, c, is worked through a rod, d, that is moved by any ordinary drivingpower. From the top and bottom of the blowing-cylinder E extend two other passages, F G, which unite into one at e, through which the compressed or intensified air is carried to the blast or furnace where it is to be used. Over the passages O D E F are placed valves 1 2 3 4, which open and close, in accordance with the working of the piston-head c, to draw or let in the air from the fan-blower and to force it out to where it is to be used.
Two or more atmospheres being condensed into one by the fan-blower, this densified air is forced through the blowing-cylinder, and thus the quantity of air and the capacity of the blowing-cylinder is increased and an increased volume of air blown into the furnace. The air may be compressed or condensed by other mechanical means, but the fan-blower is simple and efficient for the purpose.
One, two, or more blast-generating apparatus may be used for condensing the current of air in order to get as high a pressure before entering the blast-cylinder as possible, having due regard, of course, to economy in the application thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a blowing cylinder having valved openings in it and :pipes or passages connected to or with said valved openings, one or more blowers for furnishing compressed or densified air to said blowing-cylinder, substantially as and for the purpose described.
JAMES M. BAILEY.
