IMPROVEMENT IN AIR CCMPRESSORS 0R BLOWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,762, dated August 12, 1873; application filed July 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LORENZO CHASE, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and in the State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air Oompressors or Blowers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved apparatus, and Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same upon a line parallel to its front and rear sides.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The object of my invention is to thoroughly utilize steam for the production of an air-blast, by causing it to first expel air from a chamber by its direct pressure, and afterward by condensation to create a vacuum and draw into said chamber a further supply of air, to which end said invention consists, principally, in the combination of two or more air-chambers, provided with suitable openings .and apparatus for the automatic and alternate admission of steam and water, and for the admission and emission of air, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified. It consists, further, in the construction and relative arrangement of the air-chambers, air and steam ports, and water-pipes, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown. It consists, finally, in the apparatus, as a whole, when its several parts are constructed and combined to operate substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawings, A and B represent two air-chambers constructed, preferably, of metal, with a square form in horizontal section, and a conical form in vertical section, which chambers are secured at their lower open ends to or upon a suitable bed-plate, O, as shown. To the upper ends of the air-chambers, which are also open, is attached a pipe, D, that is divided into two parts by means of a partition, D, which extends transversely across its interior at or near its longitudinal center. Upon each side of the partition D an opening, d, is provided in and through the upper side of the pipe D, which openings are covered by means of an ordinary steam slidevalve, E, while both valve and openings are inclosed by a steam-chest, F, that is connected by means of a pipe, G, with a steam-boiler, said parts being so arranged as to enable steam to be alternately admitted to and excluded from each airchamber. At the transverse center and lower end of each chamber A and B an opening, H, is provided in and through the bed-plate O, which opening is for the admission of air to the interior, and is inclosed by means of a clack-valve, I, that opens inward. A second and smaller opening, K, provided in and through said base-plate, near the inner side of said chamber, is inclosed upon its lower side by means of a valve, L, which opens downward and permits the escape of air into a chamber or reservoir, M, that is placed directly beneath, from whence said air passes through a pipe, m, to the point where it is to be employed. The valves I and L are each provided with a guard or check piece, I and L, respectively, which, while permitting them to open sufficiently to admit of the free passage of air, do not permit them to pass beyond such points. If rubber is employed upon the faces of the valves it will be necessary to provide grated openings in order that said covering may not be loosened and displaced. Extending along the upper side of the pipe D is a smaller pipe, N, which terminates directly over the centers of the chambers A and B, and at each end is connected with a vertical pipe, 0, that extends downward through said pipes D into the upper end of one of said chambers, and is provided at its lower open end with a flaring sprayingnozzle, 0. The pipe N is connected near its longitudinal center with a discharge-pipe, Q, of a steam-pump, B, by means of which a supply of water is forced into the air-chambers. A cylindrical valve or stop-cock, n, is placed horizontally within each end of the pipe N, and its end provided with a dependent arm, a, which is connected with the corresponding arm of the opposite cock by means of a bar, N, so that alongitudinal movement of the latter shall cause both of said cocks to turn. The openings in and through the cooks n are relatively arranged so that when the bar N is moved in one direction the cock upon its forward end shall be opened to permit water to pass downward through the pipe 0 into the air-chamber, and the opposite cock shall be simultaneously closed, while upon an opposite movement of said bar the position of said cocks will be reversed, and water admitted to the opposite chamber. In order that the water and steam valves may be caused to operate automatically the steampump It is placed upon the bedplate C, and the upper end of its piston-rod S connected by means of a pitman, T, to or with the horizontal arm of a bell-crank or rocker-arm, U, which rocker-arm is pivoted upon one end of the pipe D in such position as to bring the upper end of its vertical arm upon a line with the rod E, for operating the steam-valve E. A
connecting-rod, V, connects the rocker-arm U with said valve-rod, andcauses the vertical reciprocating movement of the piston-rod S to be communicated to said valve. The bar N is now connected to or with the valve-rod E, so as to cause the movements of the latter to be communicated through said bar to the cocks at, and completes the apparatus, the operation of which is as follows:
Steam is admitted to the pump R and to the steam-chest F, and said pump set in motion. By the motion of the valve E steam is admitted to one of the chambers B, and by its pressward and outward without contact with the walls, so as not to unnecessarily cool the latter, while the increased size of the lower ends of said chambers renders practicable the employment of much larger valves than would otherwise be possible.
The apparatus thus constructed is simple, compact, and durable, and possesses such efficiency as to render it capable of nearly twice the amount of effective service, by use of a given quantity of steam, that is possible in apparatus where only the direct action of steam is employed for producing a current of air.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. The combination of two or more airchambers, provided with suitable openings and apparatus for the automatic and alternate admission of steam and water, and for the admission and emission of air, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The construction and relative arrangement of the air-chambers A and B, air-ports H and K, steam-ports d, and water-pipes O and 0, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
3. The hereinbei'orc-described apparatus, as a whole, when its several parts are constructed and combined to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 16th day of J nly, 1873.
LORENZO CHASE.
