GLENN MORE, F d'l-llitE'flN, NEW' LSJSEIGNR BLACKSTONE MANUFAC- TURING Y, JAMESTWN, lill YH, A CRPORATIN 0F NEW YORK.
BENCH.
Application filed March 17, 1919.
To all whom t may concern: i
Be it known that l, GLENN More., a citizen of the United States, and a resident tlainestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented cerH tain new and useful lniprovements in Benches; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ot reference marked thereon, which form a part or this specification.
This invention relates to iin'L rovements in benches or supports, peculiarly adapted for power driven washing machines.
@ne of the objects ot the invention is provide a bench or support made out et metal, so arranged as to ai'lord the greatest amount of strength with the least amount olf weight and at the minimum of manufacturing cost.
another object is to provide such a bench with a metal extension rack adapted to support a wash basket or tub when in its eX- tended position, and so connected with the main :trame as to be conveniently ioved out of the way when the entire device is crated for shipment, or when not in use in the washing' operation.
rl`hese and other objects el" the invention will more fully appear as l proceed with my specification.
ln the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view oli a bench indicating in dotted lines the position oi a round washing machine when placed thereon, and with the extension rack unfolded.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation oi the saine lshowing in dotted lines the position orp the extension rack when not in use,l
F 3 is a sectional view taken upon the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
rlhe bench, as a whole, is indicated at A, in the drawing, and the extension member at B. The bench A comprises a horizon tally disposed supporting frame, formed or front and rear angle bars 1, 2, connected at their ends by side bars 3, also of angle iron. Each of the bars 1, 2, 3, as shown in the section in Fig. 3, has a horizontal and a vertical member. rlhe open trame thus formed is, preferably, rectangular in shape as shown in Fig. 1, and is supported at each of its four corners by a vertically disposed Specification of Letters Patent.

standard el, made of angle iron. The two slee members or' the supporting standards el, Il, on the same side, are joined to the vertical member oit 'the side bar 3 by truss bars 5, 5, extending diagonally as shown in 2. The four standards are also joined together below the lower end of the truss bars 5 and at a proper distance above the lower end of the standards l by transversely arranged front, rear and side angle bars 6, joined together at their ends in a rectangw lar trame precisely as are the bars 1, 2, 3, to iorm the tub supporting surface; but the length ot the respective bars 6 is such as that when joined 'together into the frame, they .will nicely lit within and thus are adapted to be secured to the inside surfaces of the angle iron corner supports 4:, 4;. i
Parallel to the rear bar 6 and within reasonable proximity to it is a transversely extending cross bar 7, so arranged that said bar 7 and the adjacent bar 6 will constitute a suitable platform or support for an auxiliary device, such, for example, as an electric motor, indicated by the dotted lines M.
An open frame extension member is mov ably positioned to the rear of the tub frame, ttor the purpose of supporting an auxiliary wash tub, basket or other article. This eX tension 'frame consists of two side members 8, 3, joined at one end by a transverse member 9, and secured together between said transverse member and the tub end by two other transverse members 10, 11. A. pair of brackets 12, are secured to the two rear corner posts e, near their lower end, as indicated in Fig. 2. To the outer end oit' each or the brackets 12 is pivoted the lower end oi'f a link 13, the upper end of said link 13 being pivoted at 14 to the side member 8. Near the upper end or each oi the rear corner supports 1l, e, is a laterally extending bracket arm 15', provided with an inwardly directed flange member 16. The flange members 16 and the brackets 12 are so positioned, that when the extension frame B is turned into the horizontal position indicated in Fig. 2, the rear edges of the side bars 8, 3, will rest upon and be supported by the top margin oi said inwardly directed flanges 16, the outer margins of said bars 8 being supported by the links 13. On the inner end of each of the side bars 8 is pro- .vided an upturned lug 17. When the eX- tension member is in the horizontal position shown in Fig. 2, these two lugs 17, 17, on the inner ends of the side bars S, 8, will have a locking engagement with the rear frame bar l, thus further stabilizing the extension frame member in its horizontal position.
When not in use, the frame member B may be folded into the vertical position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, by simply taking hold of the front bar member 9 and raising it upwardly. This arrangement of placing` the frame extension member B in the folded up position indicated by ,the dotted lines in Fig. 2 will be found very convenient when the washing machine is not in use, and especially convenient in compacting the machine as a whole, for crating and shipment. It will be understood that all of the parts used in making the main supporting frame A and the folding extension B, with the exception of the bars the links 13, the brackets 12 and 15, will be of conventional angle bar shape, and will be riveted or otherwise suitably secured to* gether.
I claim as my invention:
l. A shaft comprising, in .combination with a support provided with a vertically extending member carrying a bracket adjacent the top, and a horizontal member, of a link pivoted to said vertical member below said bracket, and a frame pivotally secured to said link, theinner end of said frame, when in operative position, extending under said horizontal portion and the yframe resting on said bracket, substantially as described.
A shelf comprising, in combination with a support provided with two vertical members connected by a horizontal member, and a bracket nearthe top of each of said vertical members, of a frame having two connected bars, each of said bars being pivotally secured to one of said vertical iembers and extending rearwardly over said brackets and under said horizontal member, and provided with an upturned lug adapted for engagement with said horizontal member and preventing lateral movement of the frame.
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention l aiiX my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 12th day of March, A. D. 1919.
GLENN MORE. lvVitnesses:
MAE LARsEN, FLORENCE SUNDERLAND.
It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 1,328,753, granted January 20, 1920, upon the application of Glenn More, of Jamestown, New York, for an improvement in Benches, anerror appears in the printed specification requiring correoton as follows: Page 2, line 27, claim 1, for the Word shaft read shelf; and that the said Letters Patent should he read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the oase in the Patent Office.
Signed and sealed this 8th dayof June, A. D., 1920.
