L. YODY.
MATCH BOX.
APPLICATION FILED mums. 1919.

INVENTOR. Louis "ma WITNESS:
LOUIS YODY, OF SHARPSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
MATCH-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J an, 20, 192() Application filed March 29, 1919. Serial No. 285,946.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS Your, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Sharpsville in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a novel construction of match boX and the principal object of the invention is to providemeans for delivering a lighted match from the box whenever desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for feeding the matches to the delivery means one at a time and to prevent the feeding of the matches when the delivery means are in rest position.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail; reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section;
Fig. 3 is a cross section; and
Fig. 4 is a section on line fr-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the closing member.
In these views 1 indicates the case which is provided with an opening at one side closed by a door 2. The case is divided into two chambers by a partition 3. The chamber 4 is adapted to receive the matches which are placed therein through the door 2. This chamber is provided with an inclinedbottom 5 and an elongated space 6 is left between the bottom of the partition and the lower edge of said bottom through which the matches in the chamber may pass one at a time. The chamber 7 receives the delivery means 8 which consist of a stem portion 9 having a bent end 10 and a tubular part 11 is secured to the lower end of said member. This tubular part extends at right angles to the stem part and is provided with a slot 12 which comes opposite the opening 6 when the lifting device is in its lowest position so that a match passing through said opening 6 will drop into the tubular member. Said tubular member is of such size as to receive a single match so that more than one match is prevented from entering said member. The member is provided with a plunger 13 which has a portion 14: projecting through a small slot in the tubular. member and this portion is connected to one end of a spring 15 the other end of which is connected with the far side of the case. A sprin n 16 connects the lifting device to a part 0% the case and tends to hold the lifting device in its uppermost position. The lifting device is held in its lowest position by means of a button 17 slidably mounted 011 the top of the case and having a stem 18 passing through a slot in said top with its end engaging a notch 19 in the upper end of the stem. A spring 20 normally holds the part 18 in engagement with said notch. The bent part 10 of the stem engages the outer face of the top of the case and thus limits the downward movement of the lifting device. An opening 21 is formed in one end of the chamber 7 adjacent the upper end thereof and a stop 22 is located above said opening. The inner wall of said chamber below said open ing is provided with abrasive material as at 23.
It will thus be seen that when a match is desired the button 17 is pushed to cause its stem 18 to disengage the notch 19. This will permit the spring 16 to raise the lifting device and as the tubular member thereof moves upwardly, the spring 15 will be stretched so as to move the plunger 13 toward the open end of said member until the head of the match is forced against the end wall of the chamber 7. As the device passes upwardly the head of the match will be brought in contact with the abrasive material and thus the match will be lighted. As soon as the head of the match comes opposite the opening 21, the match will be partially shoved therethrough by the plunger, but will be prevented from passing entirely through said opening by being gripped between the tubular member and the stop 22. The match is then grasped by the fingers and by pressing slightly on the end 10 of the lifting device the match may be released. The lifting device is then lowered by pressing on the bent part 10 until the stem '18 of the button is swung into engagement with the notch 19 which will. hold the device in lowered position.
To prevent the matches from leaving the match chamber when the lifting device is being raised, I provide a closing device therefor which consists of a rectangular member 24 located in the lower part of the chamber 7 and carried by a spring 25 which tends to hold the member in position blocking the opening 6. When the lifting device is in lowered position, however, the tubular member will push said member 24 downwardly and hold it in this lowered position.
It will, of course, be understood that the matches must be placed in the match chamber with their heads in a position that they will roll into the tubular member with the heads next to the open end thereof.
It is thought from the foregoing descrip tion that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make'changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall with- I in the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A match box having a delivery opening therein, a partition dividing the box into two chambers, one chamber having a slot in its wall and an inclined bottom to permit the matches to pass from one chamber to the other, a lifting device consisting of a stem passing through the box and a tubular member having a slot therein for receiving the matohes'passing through said slot, spring means for the receiving device to bring the tubular member opposite the delivery opening, means for holding the delivery device in its lowest position and a spring plunger in said tubular member.
2. A match box having a delivery opening therein and abrasive material on its inner wall below said opening, a match chamber in said box, a lifting device including a tubular member having a slot therein for receiving the matches from said chamber, a spring plunger in said tubular member for forcing the match heads against theabrasive material and the match through the delivery opening and a spring-controlled cutoff device for preventing the feeding of the matches when the'lifting device is in raised position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
LOUIS YODY.
