UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAKOB BORTII, OF HEBREID, SOUTH DAKOTA.
MATCH-SAFE To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAKOB Bonrn, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at I-Ierreid, in the county of Campbell, State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Safes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to match safes and has special reference to that type of match safe which is provided with mechanism for ejecting a single match and simultaneously lighting the same.
One object of the invention is to provide, in a safe of the character described, an improved form of lighting mechanism.
Another object of the invention is to provide a form of ejecting mechanism of improved character and having a novel match clamping device connected therewith.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general. of a match safe provided with spring actuated ejecting mechanism comprising a holder arranged to open by means of a spring and close by means of other springs, a third spring to move said holder forward, means for retracting the holder and lighting mechanism.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illus trated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and; Figure 1 is a side elevation of a match safe constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a section through the safe taken on the line 1-2 of Fig. 2 and showing the aperture in retracted position. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing an aperture in the position assumed when the match is projected. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 3-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view showing the match clamp. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective of the igniting device.
The numeral 10 indicates the body of the match safe and this body is open at one end as shown and is there provided with a closure 11 hinged to the body as at 12 and normally held in closed position by means of a latch Specification of Letters Patent.

13. By means of this closure matches are introduced in that portion of the safe which is preferably termed. the reservoir and is indicated by the numeral 14.
Within the case is positioned a pair of synclinally arranged partitions slightly separated at their proximate edges as indicated. at 16 to permit the passage of a single match therethrough.
Within that portion of the case containing the actuating mechanism is provided a plate 17 adapted to slide longitudinally of the case in guides 18 secured to the side walls of said ease. Depending downward from this plate is an arm 19 which is bent to lie in parallel. relation to the plate, the parallel portion being indicated by the numeral 20. Upon one of the walls of the case is provided a lug 21 suitably perforated to receive the arm and a spring 22 is secured to said lug at one end and to the downwardly extending arm 19 at the opposite end. This spring 22 is a tension spring and normally serves to hold the parts in the position indicated in Fig. 4.
Secured to the plate 17 is a match clamp composed of a pair of spring members provided with feet riveted or otherwise at-- tached to said plate. Extending upward from these feet the match clamp forms a pair of spring arms 24 which diverge from a point adjacent the feet Above these the arms are formed with arcuate jaws 25 having roughened interior surfaces as indicated at 26 and being further provided with. an upwardly extending pair of lips 27 arranged, when the device is closed, to extend across the slot 16 to prevent a match from dropping out of the reservoir 14.
lligidly secured on the plate 17 is a spring arm 28 provided at one end with a slot 29 which is arranged to closely embrace the portions 24 of the match holder just described. This slot is so portioned that if the same be forced up along the portions 24 of the match holder, the lips 27 will be closed while if the arm 28 be depressed so that the slot 29 is adjacent the feet 23, the arms 24 will spring open and permit a match to fall within the roughened jaws 25. In order that this may be properly accomplished the arm 28 is made of sufficient resilience to normally overcome the resilience of the arms 24.
For the purpose of permitting the arm 28 to be depressed there is provided in the side of the safe a slot 30 having an enlarged portion 31 to form a retaining notch and at the opposite end a pair of oppositely disposed notches 32 and 33. Attached to the arm 23 is an arm 34 which projects through the slot and is provided on its outer end with an actuating button 35. At the top of the safe there is formed an aperture 36 upon each side thereof is positioned an igniting plate comprising a flat portion 37 secured to the top of the safe and. an arcuate portion 38 extending therein. and with the side thereof adj acent opening 36 roughened as indicated at 39.
In the operation of the device let it be assumed that the parts are in the position indicated in Fig. 3. If it be desired to eject a match the button is moved to depress the spring 28. This opens the jaws 25 and. permits the stem of a match to fall therein. The button is then pushed slightly forward into the slot and owing to the peculiar shape of this slot the spring 28 will receive and clamp the matches firmly between the jaws 25. The button is then released. As soonv as this is done the spring will force the plate 17 with the clamping device thereon rapidly forward into the position shown in Fig. 4-. This will cause the head of the match to pass outward through the opening 36, contacting at the same time with the roughened face 39 of the igniter and lighting the same. As the device reaches the forward end of this movement the arm 34 will spring upward into the notch 33 and the match will thus be clamped even more firmly and held from retracting within the safe. If it be desired to release the match when in this position the button 35 is moved to spring the arm 34 into the notch. 32. This will depress the arm 28 and permit the aws 25 to open and release said match. For the purpose of rendering the operation clear the matches are numbered as 40. It will be noted that there is provided a spring ejector, a spring clamp to hold the match and springs to open the match holding jaws and release the same.
It is obcious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore wished to confine the invention to the exact form herewith shown and described but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope of the invention.

In a match safe, a case provided with a delivery opening at one end, an igniter held in said case adjacent said delivery oaening, a match clamp held. to slide in said case comprising a pair of spring arms normally tending to separate, a third spring arm normally holding the first arms closed, a tension spring normally tending to force said clamp toward said opening and means on the third arm to permit the operation thereof from the outside of the case.
6. In a match safe, a case provided with a delivery opening at one end, and a longitudinal slot having a notch at the end opposite the delivery opening, a match clamp held to slide in said case comprising a pair of di verging spring arms normally tending to separate, a third spring arm provided with a slot embracing said pair of arms to normally hold the same closed, a spring normally tending to force said clamp toward said opening, a lateral arm fixed to said third arm and passing through the slot in the case, said lateral arm being arranged to enter the notch at the rear of said slot to hold said last mentioned spring expanded.
