To all whom it may concern 5 Be it known that I, EDWARD COULSON, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Lake Forest, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Self- Locking Clips and Shields, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a combined selflocking clip and shield adapted to be used in connection with apparatusfor permanently waving hair.

It will serve, in explaining my invention, to state briefly the general practice in permanently waving hair. The hair is wound on a number of bobbins, preferably winding relatively few strands of hair on each bobbin. A pad made oi loosely woven cloth containing moistened borax is then wrapped around the hair on the bobbin and the core thus formed is placed inside a paper tube of suitable diameter and length. The upper end of the tube is closed by inserting a wad of cotton and the lower end of the tube is crushed in and secured around the hair. Electric heaters are then placed over the tubes and heat applied for several minutes which, by reason of the moisture in the pad of borax surrounding the hair causes the hair to be thoroughly steamed and the oil removed. After suflicient. heat has been applied the heaters, tubes and bobbins are removed and the hair dressed. Heretofore the lower end of the heating tube has been closed by winding a string around it, drawing it up very tightly and then tying it in a knot. The hair is wound on the bobbin very tightly and as close to the scalp as possible. Under these conditions as the string is drawn tightly around the tube the hair under treatment is pulled and the operation is very painful. A fiber disk provided with a slot is usually placed over the hair between the end of the tube and the scalp so that any steam escaping through the lower end of the tubewill not come in direct contact with the scalp and blister it. It the string be placed too close to the edge of the tube. or if it be not drawn tightly enough, or tied securely it will Slip oil, thereby permitting the steam to escapeand blister the scalp. After heat has been applied for a few minutes the lower end of the tube becomes saturated with moisture and the paper expands causing the string to become embedded in the paper.

When the moisture has evaporated the heaters are removed and the tubes must also be removed very quickly to prevent the hair from becoming too dry and brittle. A considerable number of tubes are usually employed and it will be apparent that the operator must work quickly at this stage of the operation. It is necessary to cut the string on each tube with a pair of nippers and loosen it which also pulls the hair and causes ,pain. After the heaters are removed the tubes, not being supported in any way, fall over onto the forehead unless there is an assistant operator at hand or the person having her hair treated holds the tubes away from the forehead.

The primary object of my invention is to provide improved means for sealing the lower end of the heating tube and my invention contemplatesproviding a self-locking clip which may be quickly placed around the tube and q uickly taken off Without pulling the hair and which will also eifectively clam) the lower end of the heating tube arounr the strands of hair and thus prevent the escape of steam therelln'ough.

A further object ot' my invention is to provide a clip which will have the characteristics above mentioned and also serve to shield the scalp from the heat which radiates from the lower end of the heating tube and the heater associated therewith and to hold the heating tube at a comfortable'angle after the heater has been removed.

My invention will be better understood by reference to the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a heating tube shown in position over the bobbin and closed at. the lower end by means of a clip embodying certain principles of my invention.

Fig. 2 is a view of the clip taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

The hair istied at the lower end of the bobbin 5 and then wound tightly on the bobbin and tied to the upper end thereof. Ik cloth pad 6 containing moistened borax is wrapped around the hair and a paper heating tube 7 is then placed over the core thus formed. The upper end oi the tube is partially sealed by means of a wad 8 t cotton and the lower end completely sealed 'by means of the clip 9. The use of the heating tube, bobbin and pad, as above described,

is not new. The clip 9 may be made of any suitable material and is preferably a flat circular disk comprising the jaws 10 and 11 pivotally fastened together by means of a rivet 12. The free end ofthe jaw 11 is provided with a depending tongue 13 which 1s adapted to fit into any one of the apertures 14, 14:

. various sizes.- The inner edges of the jaw members, which engage the tube, are preferably each provided with a plurality of relatively sharp notches 15, 15 which bite into the paper when the jaws are closed and aid in preventing the clip from slipping over the endof the tube.

The clip may be easily and quickly placed around the tube and removed without pulling the hair. .The clips serve to shield the scalp from the heat radiating from the lower ends of the tubes and to hold the tubes at a comfortable angle after the heaters have been removed and thus prevent the hot tubes from falling over onto the forehead of the person whose hair is being treated.

I claim:

1. In combination with the heating tube of a hair waving appliance, a clip and scalp protector adapted to be clamped to and seal the end of the tube close to the scalp and 'to extend out beyond the tube to protect the scalp. from the heat applied to the hair during the waving operation.

2. In combination with the heating tube of a hair wavingappliance, a clip and scalp protector comprising a plurality of thin co-engaging plates adapted to be clamped around the end of the tube adjacent to the L scalp to seal the tube and protect the scalp from the heat applied to the hair during the waving operation.

3. In combination wi'th the heatin tube of a hair waving appliance, a clip an scalp protector comprislng a pair of th n curved strips hinged together at one pair of extremities and provided at their other extremities with co-engaging means whereby the clip may be clamped around the end of held together around the end of the tube close to the scalp to seal the same during the application of heat to the hair.
