M. KOSSMANN.
' LAMP SHADE HOLDER. APPLICATION FILED, JUNE 30 I919.
1,328,331 I Patented Jan. 20, 1920.
INVENTIOR ,fssmaw I ATTORN EY MAX KOSSMANN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
LAMP-SHADE HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 20, 1920.
Application filed June 3, 1919. Serial No: 301,542.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I MAX KossMANN, a citizen of the United States of America, re-' siding at Brooklyn, Kings county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Shade Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in lampshade-holders, the object being to provide means by which a bulb can be directly applied to a shade adapted or arranged to prevent the tip of the bulb from being forced against the shade while said bulb is being inserted in the holder. In other words, my improved holder is shaped to engage the rounded end of the bulb as well as to engage the bulb at the side thereof. My improved holder is also adapted to be sprung into a shade having an annular channel adjacent the mouth or open end thereof.
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved holder;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of a bulb illustrating my improved holder applied thereto, said holder being illustrated in section; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a shade having applied thereto my improved holder, illustrated as supporting a portion of a bulb.
My improved holder consists of a rectangular frame member made up of yieldable side portions 4 and 5 connected at the ends by cross-bars 6 and 7. In this instance the frame is made out of a single strip of suitable wire connected by a sleeve 8. Each side of the holder includes a yieldable loop 9 bent inwardly at its upper portion as at 10 to form a shoulder or support to engage the rounded end 11 of a bulb 12. Each side member 5 also bears against the side wall of the bulb at its portions 13 and 14, while the cross-bars 6 and 7 are arranged to engage the annular channel 15 in a shade 16. As can be seen, the loops 9 will be large enough for the bulb toprotrude therethrough; hence the portions or elbows 13. as will be apparent, are the result of looping the wire intermediate its ends, and I prefer to form a substantially circular loop as herein indicated by 9 to produce the elbows 13 and 14 in order to provide a member that will project sufficiently to engage the bulb so that the shade can be adjusted to a desired angular position. The elbows 13 and 14 provide two points of contact at opposite points on the surface of the bulb, and the shoulders 10 a third contact point. The three point contact at opposite sides of the bulb provides a firm support and yet permits the shade to be easily adjusted;
By the construction shown and described, my improved holder constitutes angular supports for a bulb, said supports taken together forming a cradle to embrace the bulb.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a bulb holder, a. strip of suitable wire bent to form a rectangular frame, the side members of the frame being formed, intermediate the ends, into a substantially circular loop to form elbows at the point of connection of said loops and the straight portions of the side members, each loop being bent at itsupper portion at an angle relative to the remainder of the loop to form shoulders or supports, to engage the rounded end of a bulb.
2. In a bulb holder a plurality of yieldable side members, means connecting the side members at the ends thereof, bulb engaging elements carried by each side member arranged to bear against a bulb at three points, two points on the side of the bulb and one point on the rounded end of the bulb.
3. In a bulb holder, a plurality of yieldable side members, means connecting the side members at the ends thereof, bulb engaging elements carried by each side member arranged to bear against a bulb at three points, two points on the side of the bulb and one point on the rounded end of the bulb, said side members being arranged to engage the annular groove .in a shade.
4. In a bulb holder a plurality of yieldable side members, means connecting the side members at the ends thereof, bulb en gaging elements carried by each side member arranged to bear against a bulb at three points, two points on the sideof the bulb and one-point on the rounded end of the MAX KOSSMANN.
