CHARLES A. PSILANDER, OF EASTON, PINNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 WILLIAM WHARTON, JR. & (10., OF EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENN- SYLVANIA.
HARD-CENTER CROSSING-FROG.
1 Specification of Letters Patent. 7
Patented Jan. 13, 1920.
Application filed September 3, 1919. Serial No. 321,405.
certain new and useful Improvements in' Hard-Center Crossing-Frogs, of which the following is a specification.
Prior to my invention centers haying a driving fit in a frog or crossing body have been proposed, but they have not been adopted because they could not be removed for repair or replacement purposes without tearing up the track.
My invention provides a renewable and reversible hardened frog and crosslng center having a machine fit and self-contained means whereby it may be readily removed for repair or adjustment purposes. The 1mproved center obviates the use of filling or I grouting and requires no auxlliary fastenlhe nature, characteristicfeatures, and scope of the invention will more readily be understood from the following description taken in connection with the annexed drawings, forming a part hereof, where1n- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improve ments applied to a frog.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of my improvements applied to a crossing.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
The usual track body 5 is provided with a circular depression or cored portion 6, which receives with a driving fit a cone spondingly shaped plug or hardened center- 7, the contacting surfaces .of the recess and center being machined and ground for this purpose. The chamber 8 formed by the de-' pending marginal wall or skirt of the plug communicates with a channel 9 in the track body 5. The channel extends to the top of the track body and is closed by a countersunk screw cap 10, which can be readily re.-
moved, as by means of a screw-driver, in fitting or removing the plug. In order to remove the plug, fluid example may be suppied by a portable pump, is admitted to the chamber 8, via the channel 9. The annular groove or space ressure, which, for
11, intermediate the plug and track body, is
useful, when present, as a leakage space for pressure fluid and increases the effective area of the plug acted upon by the fluid.
In the modification, Figs. 2 and 4;, the plug or center 12 has a driving or machine fit in the crossing body 13. The plug hasa bottom chamber or subway 14 to which fluid pressure may be admitted from a channel 15 extending to the top of the plug. The closure for the channel may be a nipple 16 with a countersunk cap 17.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In a track structure, a center having a driving fit, and means for ejecting it with fluid pressure.
2. In a track structure, a center having a fluid-tight fit, a chamber formed partly by the center, and means whereby it may be supplied with fluid pressure to eject the center.
a center having a ter having a driving fit, and a normally closed fluid supply channel communicating with said chamber.
5. A track structure having fluid pressure chamber of which an element is a center having a driving fit, a fluid supply channel communicating with said chamber, and
a countersunkstopper for said channel.
I In testimony whereof I aflix my'fsignature.
CHARLES A. PS'ILANDER.
