UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAM VAN BRUT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
RAlLwAY-FROG. 'p I A' SPEGIFICATION forming' ;part of Letters Patent No. 634,780, dated October 10, 1899. Application na Deante 14, 189'8. serial no. 699,241. na moda.)
To 'coZZ witam it maty concern: i
Be it known that I, ABRAM VAN BRUNT, of the city of N ew York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and.useful Improvements in Railway-Frogs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip-- portions, so that the points may be replaced' Ordinarily when the pointswhen worn out. of the frogs are broken the whole frog must he removed and a new one inserted, which operation involves much expense and inconvenience. My invention avoids this.
This specification is the disclosure of'one 'form of my inventionj while the claim defines the actual scope of the invention.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying' drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the Views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention applied to a railway-frog. Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the frog with partsbroken out on the line 2 2 iu Fig. 1. i Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4: illustrates the application of the invention to crossingfrogs. i
Referring to the first three figu res, the frog is constructed in the usual shape and has, therefore, the two side vpoints 5 and 6 and the end points 7 and 8. In the frogs the end points 7 are not subjected to great usage,'and consequently need not be replaced. The points 5, 6, and S are formed on movable sections 9 and 10 and are' let into the surface of the main portion or body of the frog, so as to lie fiush with the same. Now as the frog is used and these points are broken and chipped away by the action of the Wheels of the cars the movable Sections 9 and 10 may be lifted out of the frog and replaced. This involves an operation which will' take very little time and will not, of course, be as expensive as reprovided on each side with openings 14, which expose the several nuts 12, thus permitting a tool to be inserted into the frog for the purpose of releasing the nuts. In the ,use of the frog therefore the frog is embedded in the streetor road-bed in the usual manner, and to reach the studs" 11 for the purpose of replacing the Sections 9 and 10 it is onlyneces-v sary to remove a small portion of the roadbed immediz'itely adj acent to the openings 14, so that a wrench may be applied to the nuts 12. The form of the invention shown in Fig. 4
does not differ materially from that shown in the 'other figures. It illustrates simply the application of the invention to a right-angled crossing. Here the crossing is provided wi th three removable Sections 101, which are let into the body of'the frogto lie fiush With the upper face thereof. The sections 10a have p studs ll formed thereon, and these studs are similar in every respect to the studs 11 and are adapted to carry the nuts for the purpose of securing the sections 10a in place.
Having thus fully described my inventiou, I- claim as new and desire to lsecure by Letters Patent- The combination of a railway-frog body having Vertical side walls and having an openingrin one of the same by which to reach the interior of the frog-body, and having cavities in its upper or top face, removable frog-points let into said cavities, studs formed on the frog-points and proj ecting down ward through the top wall of the frog-body, and means for securing the studs against the under face of 95' the top wall of the frog-body, substantially w as described.
