Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES EDWARD SoULE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, (whose POSt-OfiZlCG address is No. 2 Carver street, Somerville, Massachusetts,) have invented an Improvement in Antirattlin'g Devices, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts. v
This invention relates to improvements in hood fasteners for automobiles and more particularly to improved means for pre venting the side of the hood from rattling.
The invention has for its object among other things to provide means of the general character referred to that may be produced as relatively low cost, that is eflicient in operation and simple in construction and that may be readily and quickly applied to the hood fastener without removing or dismounting the latter or any part thereof.
These and. other objects of the invention will be readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings of one formof the invention selected for the purpose of illustration it being'understood that the invention in its true scope is definitely set' forth by the claims.

The side of an automobile hood, of ordinary and usual construction, is shown at 2, said part 2 being provided with the usual projecting member 4 of any suitable construction provided at the top with a recess or notch 6 to be engaged by the hook-shapedprojection 8 of the hoodfastener. The latter'may be of any suitable and usualcon- 'struction. Herein it is shown as comprlsing its lower end the body 10 is provided with a restricted opening 16 through which extends with a sliding fit a rod 18, the upper end of which is provided with a guiding collar 20 within said body, while the lower 'end of said rod is provided with a rounded or ball-shaped portion 22 received within a socket member 24 upon a plate 26 forming a part of the automobile frame, thus form-' ing a ball and socket or swivel mounting for said fastener. Within the body '10 the rod 18 is surrounded by a spring 28 having hearing at one end against the lower end wall of said bodyand at its upper end against the collar 20.
A member, such as a. fiange 30, which may be secured to the plate 26 or may be in tegral therewith and extends along the lower edge of the side 2 of the hood inside the latter when the hood is closed, is vided to prevent the side .of the hood from swinging inwardly, and the spring connection of the rod 18 with the body 10 of the fastener is such that in order to ca-use the hook-shaped projection 8 to engage the notch 6 of the member 4, said body must-be raised relatively-to said rod, thus putting the spring 28 under tension, said spring remaining under tension during such engagement and thus holding the side of the hood down as will be readily understood bythose skilled in the art.
It is well known that the, sides of hoods thus held'or secured are liable to rattle and in order to prevent this I have conceived means one embodiment of which will now I fastener are preferably made integral and may consist of a plate of spring metal shaped substantially shown in Fig. 3, so as to form a holding having'the inturned flanges 36, 36 to receive between them and securely hold the removable pad 34, and a clamp having the semi-cylindrical clamping plates 38, 38 provided with the outturned flanges 40, 40 at their free ends. By pressing the outturned flanges 40, a0 longitudinally against the body 'l0'of the fastener, said flanges will yield outwardly to allow said body to be embraced by the seml- It will be readily understood by those skilled in the art that the metal body portion of the device can be easily stamped and shaped from spring metal, thus enabling the a device to be manufactured at low cost. It will also be seen that the device can be easily and quickly attached to or removed from the fastening devices in common use for holding down the sides of the hood, and this without dismounting said fastener or separating or removing any part thereof.
' While the action of the clamping plates 38,
38 is amply suflicient to prevent accidental removal of the device from the fastener, the engagement of the pad 34 of the device .withthe side of the hood when said device is in operative position renders such accidental removal impossible. The device also has the advantage of being adjustable longitudinally of the fastener, thus enabling it to be quicklyv located at that point where it will bear with the greatest effect against the side of the hood, and when in operative position said device will efliciently prevent rattling of the parts.
Instead of being made integral, the padholding flanged portion of the device and the clamping plates 38, 38 may each be made of a separate piece of sheet metal, in which case the latter only need be of spring metal. These two parts may then be spot-welded or otherwise secured to each other. Such a modified construction is shown in Fig. 5.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that devices constructed in accordance with the present invention possess advantages other than those specifically referred to herein. It is also to be understood that while I have herein described two specific embodiments of my invention, the invention is not to be considered as limited to the details described, nor any of them, but that said embodiments may be variously modified within the true scope of my invention, which is more particularly set forth in the claims.
Claims.
1. The combination with the side of an automobile hood, a fastener for the latter and a member to engage the side of the hood upon one side when the hood is closed, of a device comprising means to removably secure it to said fastenerand means to engage the side of the hood upon the opposite side from that engaged by said member, when said fastener is in operative position.
2. The combination with the side of an automobile hood, a fastener for the latter and a member to engage the side of the hood on one side when the hood is closed, of a device to be carried by said fastener comprising means to engage the side of the hood upon the opposite side from that engaged by said member, when said fastener is in operative position, and means whereby said device can be secured to said fastener without removing the latter.
3. The combination with the side of an automobile hood, a fastener for the latter and a member to engage the side of the hood on one side when the hood is closed, of a device to be carried by said fastener comprising means to engage the side of ,the hood upon the opposite side from that engaged by said member, when said fastener is in operative position, and means including opposed semi-cylindrical resilient clamping members whereby said device can be secured to said fastener without dismounting the latter.
4. The combination with the side of an automobile hood, a fastener for the latter and a member to engage the side of the hood upon one side when the hood is closed, of a device comprisingmeans to removably secure it to said fastener and a pad to engage the side of the hood upon the opposite side fromthat engaged by said member, when said fastener is in operative position.
5. The combination with the side of an automobile hood, a fastener for the latter and a member to engage the side of the hood upon one side when the hood is closed, of a device comprising means to removably secure it to said fastener and a removable pad to engage the side of the hood upo. the opposite side from that engaged by sa. l memher, when said fastener is in operative position.
6. A device of the class described to be earned the fastener of the side of an automoblle hood, comprising, in'combination, clamping means to secure said device to said fastener and means to engage the side of the hood when said fastener is in operative position.
7. A device of the class described to be carried by the lfastener of the side of an automobile hood, comprising, in zombination, means to engage the side of'the hood when said fastener is in operative position; holding means therefor; and means secured to said holding means for securing the device. to said fastener.
8. A device of the class described to be 13 carried by the fastener of the side of any automobile hood, comprising, in combinatron, a pad to engage the side of the hood when said fastener 1s in operative posltlon;
metal holding means therefor; and a spring metal clamp spotwelded to said holding means for securing the device to said fas-- ytener.
