IMPROVEMENT IN CLEVISES.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a clevis and draft-rod, with connections for a plow-beam, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of a plow-beam with my invention attached thereto( A represents a plow-beam, through the front end of which is a slot for the reception of the olevis B. This clevis consists merely of a flat iron bar, pivoted by a rod, a, in the center, at the inner end of the slot, and held by another rod or pin, 12, passing through the end of the beam and through the clevis. In the end of the plow-beam are several holes, so as to change the clevis to different angles and thus take in more or less land, as desired. Through the front end of the clevis B is passed an eyescrew, 0, from underneath, and through the rod D is attached to the lower end of a lever E, which is pivoted in a mortise through the plow-beam A. Above the plow-beam the lever E is, by a rod, cl, connected with a stirrup, G, which passes on each side of a standard, H, and attached to a spring, I, firmly fastened to said standard. This standard is L-shaped, and firmly attached to the upper side of the plow-beam A.
It will readily be seen that the strain on the draft-rod is in a great measure transferred to the spring, and if the plow should meet any solid obstruction, and in plowing rough, rocky, or new ground, the spring will check the team gradually without any sudden jar or jerk, and thus save the plow-irons from breaking. The rod d maybe moved up and down on the lever E to regulate the tension of the spring.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination of the slotted plow-beam A, pivoted adjustable clevisB, eye-screw O, and draft-rod D, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the plow-beam A, of the draft-rod D, lever E, adjustable rod (1, stirrup G, standard H, and spring I, eye-bolt O, and clevis 13, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
