Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 11, 1919. Serial N0. 310,139.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB H. ZINN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented. a new and useful Mold for Sewer-Structure Invert- Sections, of which the following is a specification,reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to a mold whereby to make composite sections of invert comprised in sewer structures, the invention having reference more particularly to means whereby invert sections may be produced ready to be set in place during the construction of sewers.
An object of the invention is to provide means whereby sewer invert sections may be expeditiously and efliciently produced in order to have them ready at hand for use where needed.
Another object is to provide improved mold of such construction as to be adapted to be used in producing sewer invert sections having burnt clay portions and monolithic concrete or cement portions.
A further object is to provide means whereby sewer invert sections may be conveniently and cheaply produced either at a factory or in the vicinity of sewer locations, for the purpose of supplying large pieces of material adapted to be quickly placed in position without waiting on the slow process of laying small pieces in place or entailing loss of time incidental to the molding of inverts in the sewer trench.
With the above-mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in a sectional mold of novel construction and having novel devices therein, to produce an improved sewer invert; and, the invention consists further in the parts and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter particularly described and further defined in the accompanying claims.
Referring to the drawings,-Figure 1 is a top plan of the improved mold, with reinforcement arranged therein in a particular manner to become part of a completed invert section; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary end elevation of the improved mold; Fig. 3 is a section approximately on the line III- III in Fig. 1; Fig. 4: is a perspective view prises a face plate 17,

In practically carrying out the objects of the invention a flat base 1 of suitable shape is provided and adapted to support the mold and the product thereof. A curved top form wall 2 is provided which is set up on end on the base and is adapted to shape that portion of the invert which is uppermost in the sewer structure. A similar curved bottom form wall 3 is provided which is larger circumferentially than the other wall and is set up likewise on the base to mold or shape the concrete body of the invert section. At one end of the wall 2 it is provided with hinge members 4 and at the opposite end with similar members 4'. At one end of the other wall 3 the latter is provided with hinge members 5 and at the opposite end with similar members 5. A suitable number of tie bars 6 and 6 are provided and each one has two hinge members 7 and 8 on its ends that are connected to the hinge members on the curved walls by means of hinge pins 9 and 10 or 9 and 10, the hinge pins preferably being loose so that either one may be removed to permit the mold to be removed from the completed invert section. Preferably end plates 11 and 12 are provided and secured to the inner sides of the tie bars. Each tie bar is provided with adjusting screws 13 and 14 that extend through the end plate 11 and other adjusting screws 15 and 16 that extend through the end plate 12. Side forms are provided which are to be adjusted in position by the adjusting screws, each side form having two sections or parts, one of which comprises a face plate 17 and a groove-forming rib thereon having a side portion 18, a bottom portion 19 and a side portion 20, the face plate 17 being arranged against the adjusting screws 13. The face plates 17 and 17 are arranged against the wall 8 and space is left between the side portion 20 and the plate 21 and similar space between the side ortion 20 and the plate 22.
The base 1 is provided on its top with a suitable number of filling blocks 23,2 1, 25 and 26, spaced apart a slightly greater distance than the width of a block, and may be arranged as shown in Fig. 1 in full lines or as shown by broken lines, the blocks being curved and arranged with their concave faces against the wall 2. Each block preferably is composed of a relatively short section of burnt clay tiling and has grooves 7 and 28 in its convex side and other grooves 29 and 30 in its edges to receive plastic material 1 In order to mold a groove in the lower end of the section when molded a rib 31 is arranged on the base 1 so as to extend from the portions 19 and 19' of the side forms and may be secured to the base if desired.
A curved wire screen reinforcement 32 is provided for the invert section and extends through the spaces at the ends of the face plates 21 and 22 and has edge portions 33 and 34: that are bent over into the hollow groove-forming parts toward the bottom portions 19 and 19 thereof, the reinforcement to become embedded in the concrete body of the invert section and permitting the edge portions to be bent back to normal position so as to project from the invert section and become embedded in the sewer structure which is to be erected on the ends of the invert sections. Preferably a suitable number of ties 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 4O, 41 are provided of suitable dimension to extend from the reinforcement 32 to the wall 2 at the edges of the blocks 23, 24 and others, being supported upon the base 1.
In practical use the mold is set up as illustrated and a suitable number of ,burnt clay facing tiles, similar to but longer than the blocks 23 are arranged on the inner side of the wall 2, both upon and between the blocks until the mold is filled. The reinforcement being set in position, the space in the mold material, such as concrete or cement, the material filling in all spaces and entering the grooves in the tiles. The piles of tile sections that are arranged between the filling blocks are each as high as the top of the mold walls while the uppermost tile of the piles on the filling blocks projects upward to form tongues which will extend into the space left after the invert section is removed from the filling blocks, such arrangement aifording broken joint formation of the tiles which are to constitute water proof facing of the sewer bottom when the joints are filled with suitable mortar. In case the tiles or the filling blocks are not accurately made, as may be the case the adjusting screws are manipulated to insure proper spacing between the tile blocks or sections. When the invert section is completely molded and seasoned the hinge pins may be withdrawn to permit the mold walls to be removed from the product which will subsequently become further seasoned. The invert sections while being particularly suited for the bottoms of sewers may obviously be used for the sides and the crowns of the sewers or wherever needed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. An invert section mold including a flat base, two curved mold walls and end walls on the base, and filling blocks spaced apart on the base against one of the mold walls.
2. An invert section mold including a base having a curved rib thereon and also filling blocks spaced apart and distant from the rib, a curved top mold wall on the base against the filling blocks, a curved bottom wall on the base distant from the outer side of the rib, and tie bars connected to the mold walls.
3. An invert section mold including a base, two curved mold walls on the base, each wall having hinge members at each end thereof. one of the walls being shorter circumferen tially than the other, tie bars connected to the mold walls at the ends thereof and provided each with adjusting screws, and face plates on the base between the mold walls and engaged by the adjusting screws.
4. An invert section mold including a pair of curved concentrically-arranged mol walls, tie bars connected to the walls at the ends thereof and having each a plurality of ad usting screws, and two side forms be-' tween the mold walls adjacent to the tie bars, each side form comprising two face plates spaced apart and engaged by the adjusting screws, one of the face plates having a groove-forming rib on the inner side thereof.
5. In an invert section mold, the combination with a base, of a pair of curved mold walls arranged on end upon the base, one of said walls being shorter circumferentially than the other, a curved rib on the base between said walls, end forms connected with said walls and provided with groove-form ing ribs at the ends respectively of the curved rib, and filling blocks spaced apart 1 on the base against the shorter one of said walls.
