.The principal object of the invention is to provide a cabinet cover containing an amplifier which may while the machine is l in operation emit the sounds reproduced from the records at. a higher altitude or plane than usual, sotth'at the sound may be more clearly heard throughout a room or auditorium.
A further object is to provide means whereby a cabinet-cover containing an amplifier may be inclined upwardly While the machine is in operation, thereby delivering the sounds to greater advantage than a horn dis used in a fixed lower level plane.
nd finally, a further object is to provide means whereby the cover may be held .in a raised position, or permitted to remain upon the top of the cabinet, while the machine is in operation.
These and other objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevational View, showing a cabinet and cover made in accordance with the invention, parts being broken away in order to disclose the interior construction.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3' is a horizontal sectional view. taken preferably arranged to contain the recordsin such manner that the same are readily accessible.
The gramophone driving mechanism is contained within the upper section 11 of the cabinet, through which extends a spindle 14, supporting the record table 15, the same being substantially central of the cabinet, and in all respects arranged in the usual manner.
Connected by hinges 16, is the cover, the same comprising a hollow base 17-, preferably of rectangular cross section, and being shown as having, substantially central in its height, a transverse partition or wall 18, over which is a sound chamber 19, closed at its upper side by the top 20. The front-wall of the chamber 19, has a plurality of open panels 22, from which rearwardly extend the side walls 23, of the amplifier 24, which may be of any suitable construction. Said side walls 23 are preferably of such contour that they curve convergingly toward the rear of the amplifier, and said amplifier is shown as closed at its top by a plate 25.
Rigidl'y engaged within the amplifier in the form shown, at its convergedor inner end, is an elbow 27, partially held in position by a backing or filler 28, one of elbow openings facing outwardly in the direction of the amplifier axis, while the opposite end of the elbow is secured within the partition 18, through which it slightly projects, this elbow being shown as of the type known as goose-neck.
A bracket 30 is fixed upon the main cover plate of-the casing 11 in the form shown, and has secured therein a tube 31:, engaged in a sleeve-like element 32, from which the tone arm 33 extends radially in a normally horizontal plane, the sound box being carried upon the extremity of the tone arm, which is movable upon the tube 31.
The extreme upper end of the tube 31 is shown as slightly beveled at its upper end and adapted to engage-within the lower opening of the elbow 27, when the cover is in closed position. However, when it is desired to use the gramophone with the cover in a raised position, the cover is turned up upon its hinges 16, and a tubular support 36, having one opening 37, directed downward, and another diagonally facing opening 38 directed upward, is engaged at its end 37 with the beveled end of the tube 31, while the opposite, diagonally facing end may be easily engaged within the open lower end of the elbow 27, and due to its hollow construction, the sound from the tone arm is conducted to the amplifier 2a, in a manner which will be clearly apparent, and besides conducting the sound, the elbow constitutes an effective support for malntaining the cover in raised position, as is best shown in Figs. 1 and 4 of the drawings.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a pleasing and efl'ective form of cabinet cover has been disclosed, which permits playing of the instrument while the cover is either in raised or lowered position and in such manner as to give forth the whole volume of sound, whereby the tone of the instrument is improved.
Having thus described my invention, and set forth the manner of its construction and use, what I'claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. In a talking machine, in combination with a casing carryingsound-reproducing instrumentalities, a cover movable with respect to said casing, sound amplifying means carried by said cover and provided with an inlet adapted to communicate with said sound-reproducing instrumentalities in the closed position of said cover, and a rigid detachable tube adapted to be interposed and form a means of communication between said sound-reproducing instrumentalitie-s and said inlet when the cover is open.
2. In a talking machine, in combination with a casing carrying sound-reproducing instrumentalities, a cover movable with respect to said casing, sound amplifying means carried by said cover and provided with an inlet adapted to communicate with said sound-reproducing instru'mentalities in the closed position of said cover, and a tube adapted to be interposed and form a means of communication between said sound-reproducing instrumentalities and said inlet when the cover is in an open position, said tube in said last-named position constituting a means for retaining the cover in said open position.
3. In a talking machine, in combination with a casing having sound-reproducing instrumentalities, a cover hinged to said casing, sound amplifying means carried by said cover and provided with an inlet adapted whenthe cover is in closed position to communicate with said sound-reproducing instrumentalities within the inclosure of the casing walls, and a rigid tube adapted to be interposed and form a means of communication between said sound'reproducing instrumentalities and said inlet when the cover is open.
4. In a talking machine, in combination with a casing having sound-reproduciug instrumentalities, a cover hinged to said casing, sound amplifying means carried by said cover and provided with an inlet adapted when the cover is in closed position to communicate with said sound-reproducing instrumentalities within the inclosurc of the casing walls,'and a tube adapted to be interposed and form a means of communication between said sound reproducing instrumentalities and said inlet when the cover is open, said tube constituting a means for retaining the cover in open position.
5. In a talking machine, in combination with a casing carrying sound-reproducing instrumentalities, a cover movable with respect to said casing, sound amplifying means carried by said cover and provided with an inlet adapted to communicate with said sound-reproducing instrumentalities in the closed position of said cover, and a rigid reversely bent tube adapted to be interposed between said sound-reproducing instrumentalities and said inlet in the open position of said cover.
6. In a talking machine, in combination with a casing carrying sound-reproducing instrumentalities, a cover movable with respect to said casing, sound amplifying means carried by said cover and provided with an inlet at the under side of said cover, said inlet adapted to communicate with said soundreproducing instrumentalities in the closed position of said cover, and rigid means adapted to be interposed between said soundreproducing instrumentalities and said inlet to form a means of communication therebctween in the open position of said cover.
7. In a talking machine, in combination with a casing carrying sound-reproducing instrumentalities, a cover hinged to said cas ing, sound amplifying means carried by said cover and provided with an inlet adapted to communicate with said sound-reproducing instrumentalities when the cover is in closed position, and adetachable tube adapted to be interposed between said sound-reproducing instrumentalities and said inlet and support said cover in an open position.
