lor tioundddeproducing lidachines,y ot vvhich the l-ollovving is a specication.
litly present invention relates to cabinets tor sound-reproducing machines and has special reterence to the provision ot a cabinet tor such a purpose tor installation with in the vvalls or partitions oil buildings vvhich shall amply protect the mechanismand at the sametime will alilord tacilities tor easy' manipulation ot the instrument and the sten age oit a considerable number ot records9 and i vvill also taclitate the vtree discharge ot re produced sound vvhile the mechanical noises originating in the operation ot the instrument vvill be largely, it not vvholly absorbed and dissipated lit will be seen 'trom the tollovving descripn tion that but one et the outside :taces et my cabinet vvill require the usual cabinet-nuria iinish., and that by the use oit my cabinet considerable room-space heretotore devoted to such a cabineh vvill be entirely saved.,
pilhe above9 as vvell as other objects` ot my inventiom 'vvill hereatter clearly appear and vvill be pointed out in the appended claim..
in the dravvingei-m Figure l is a diagran'unatic perspective vieiv oi" my invention installedin the vvall or partition ot a building..
iiig. a is a vertical section thereolt, on line 22H2, ot Fig.. l..
lilig, 3 is an enlarged detail ot the circuit controller illuminating lthe upperv chamber..
llig.; t is a tragmentary vievv et thevupper I portion ot the cabinet showingl a modilied closure 'tor the sound amplitying chamber.
liteterring to the drawings, it vvill be seen my cabinet pre'terably comprises vertical, parallel side vvalls llt-l0, that are connected at their bach edges by a vertical rear vvall ll9 and are provided vvith a top la and bottom ld.. intermediate the top and bot-` tom, the cabinet is divided into three chambers or compartments by horizontal iloors or partitions Zbl and l5, the torrner being spaced trom the bottom a distance sucient to provide a storage chamber l@ lin vvhicli the sound-reproducing records are placed vertically in suitable raclrs l'l., "ihe upper partition lla, with the Walls and topy tot an upper chber ai and the partition it provides a structure "or supporting the mo tor l@ connected to a suitable source ot electric supply tor driving a suitable gear-train i9, said motor and gear-train being installed upon the underside ai a hinged door 2U in the partition l5. 'llhe gear-train drives a suitable spindle al that projects 'through the door 20, and has a rotatable dishreceivmg table 22 :mounted V thereon and rotatable therewith rlhe usual sound-reproducing diaphragm bon 23 is mo-unted upon the outer side ot a siviveled tone-arm 24%, that entendsA tangentially to the sound groove on the record and connects at its stationary or rear end with a passage leading to 'the sound-amplitying horn 25, that is disposed in the chamber 26 betvveen the partitions la and instead ot providingtlie usual legs or support :tor the cabinet, t e rear and side vvalls entend dovvn to the door, substantially as shown, and the trent vvall 2i' ot the cabinet is provided vvith three openings tor access to the three chambers lo, ai, and ab.. Wllhe upper and lovver openings are closed by suitable hinged doors, it@ and E229, respectively, and the intermediate opening is closed by a suitable grille-Wordt 3U, that is baclred with some suitable tabric to prevent the admission ot dust and to allovv the sound to be emitted thereilrem l'he cabinet thus constructed is linished upon the outside ot the liront Wall, includ inside or behind the vvall or partition ot H the building.. d suitable recess or niche is made in the vvall or partition 3l oit' the building and the cabinet inserted therein so that the liront vrall is substantially 'llush with the outer surta/ce ot the vvall or partition 3l., and :terms a continuation thereoit. ltllolding strips 3a are secured to the vvall di and entend around the side and. top edges ot the cabinet and the usual baseboard and molding 33 are secured to the partition or vvall 3i in the usual manner and entend across the trent 'lace et the lovver portion ot the cabinet Wall @7., thus conveniently inclosing the tallring machine cabinet inside the vvall ot the building, Hush vvith the outer tace thereoi" and entirely out oi the room or spannt tilt titi
tid
ltltl lliti lllll lin order to illustrate the upper chamber where the sound-reproducing elements are installed, and which, owing to the fact that the talking machine cabinet is not provided with the usual hinged cover, l prefer' to provide a suitable socket 3i, in which an electric bulb 35, of suitable candle power is screwed. This socket may be conveniently placed in the upper part of the chamber a and depend from inside of the top wall l2, in which position it will illuminate all parts of the chamber m. The circuit wires leading to the socket are controlled by a make-andbreak contact element 36, that is actuated by the opening and closing of the upper doors 28, as shown in detail in F ig. 2.
ln Fig. i l have shown a modified structure for closing the opening to the sound amplifying elements, which comprises suitable doors 37, that are hinged to the sides of the opening and which are divided by a vertical panel 38, that is provided with one or a number of openings 39, of conventional contour, so that the doors need not be opened for the purpose of emitting the sound from the amplifying element. lf desired, however, the person operating the instrument may open the doors 37 to further increase the volume ci sound.
While ll have illustrated and described certain specific means for carrying out my Leitner,
invention, it, of course, will be obvious to others skilled in this art, that divers modiications thereof may be made without materlally departing from the spirit of' my inventlon. l desire it understood, therefore, that all such refinements are included within the scope of my` invention as expressed in the appended claim, to which reference is now made.
'What l claim is A cabinet for sound reproducing machines comprising a recess built in the permanent wall of a building, a removable box-like form positioned in said recess and open at its front side, compartments in said boxlike form, sound reproducing mechanism in one of said compartments, sound amplifying means in another of said compartments, and suitable closures for the front of said box-like form; whereby the walls of the recess dissipate the mechanical noises of the sound reproducing device, and a suitable trim covering the joints between the boxlike form and the walls of the recess.
Signed at Chicago, countyyof Cook and State of illinois, this 10th day of March, 1919.
