Description

L. A. BLOCK.
TOOTH BRUSH.
APPLICAUON FILED IULYZI, I916.
Patented Dec. 30, 1919.
STATES PATENT oFrIoE.
V LOUIS ADRIEN BLOCK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOOTH-BRUSH.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, LOUIS ADRIEN BLooK, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Tooth- Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to atooth-brush and the object thereof is to provide an improved type of brush adaptable for elficient use in relation to certain parts of the human teeth,
' which parts are not readily accessible to 7 tion above, will be in 30.
taken upon the brushes of the type commonly in use.
A more detailed object is to provide a brushwhich embodies a brush element disposed to face approximately in the direction of the opposite end of the handle of the brush so that said brush element will be peculiarly adapted to' reaching the inner surfaces of the teeth. p
A further detailed object isto provide means whereby the mentioned brush element will be adjustable with respect to the handle of the brush so that it may be adjusted into various convenient positions for adapting it to articular uses.
ther objects and aims of the invention, moreor less specific than those referred to part obvious and in part pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of'parts and, applications of principles, constituting the invention; and
the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which are to be taken as a part of this specification, and in which I have shown a merely preferred form of embodiment of the invention:
Figurel is a plan view of a tooth brush constructed in accordance with this invention, andindicating the bristle carrying porof the brush in two different positions. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view plane of line IVIV of Fig. l; and
Fig. 3 is a further enlarged sectional view taken upon the plane of line VV of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings for a'detalled description of the structure illustrated therein, theyrefcrence character 6 indicates the handle of the brush. The brush element 7 is arranged at one end of the handle 6, and is carried upon the plate 13 which is pivotally connected at one end of the handle...
the pivotal connection may he made in set of recesses,
Specification of Letters latent. Patented Dec, 30, 1919, Application filed July 21, 1916. Serial No. 110,442.
any approved manner, but preferably includes a pivotextension 8 projecting later-F 13 is in one position, and having a second i 12, for receiving theribs 10 when the plate is in a different position.
Any desired number of sets of recesses may be formed within the bearing aperture of the plate for retaining the brush element in different positions, but usually two sets is suflicient, one set for retaining the brush in a right angular position with respect to the length of the handle, and the second set for retaining the brush in substantially the same plane as the handle, as illustrated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The pivot extension 8 may be made to project from the handle at any desired an- .gle, with respect to the general direction of length of the handle, so to dispose the rubbing surface of the brush element in the most appropriate position relatively to the handle for properly operating upon the inner surfaces of the users teeth.
As many changes could be made in this construction without departing from the scope of the following claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in 1 the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative 'set of bristles pro ecting from one face thereof, said member having an aperture formed therethrough in a-d1rection transverse to the plane in which the bristles project, the handle portion having a pivot part extending laterally therefrom through the a handle por-' aperture in said bristle carrying member pivotally connecting the bristle carrying member with the handle to permit rotary adjustment of the bristle carrying member so that the bristles thereof may be caused to.
face in the direction of either side or one end of the handle, and the bristle carrying member and said pivot part of the handle having means cooperative to yieldingly obstruct free rotation of the bristle carrying member when the bristle carrying member is therefrom rotatably through the aperture in said bristle-carrying member adapted to connect the bristle-carryin member with the handle and to permit ad ustment of the bristle-carrying member so that the bristles thereof may be caused to face in the directionof either side or one end of the handle, the aperture in the bristle-carrying member having a plurality of recesses therein, and the pivot comprising resilient parts for engaging within said recesses adapted to yieldingly retain the bristle-carrying member in ace ing portion, the bristle-carrying portion comprising an elongated member having a set of bristles projecting from one face thereof as is common to tooth brushes, and said member having an aperture formed therethrough transverse to the plane in which said bristles project, the handle portion having a pivot extending laterally therefrom rotatab'ly through the aperture in said bristle-carrying member adapted :to connect the bristle-carryin member with the handle and to-permit a justment of the bristle-carrying member so that the bristles thereof may be caused to face in the direction of either side or one end of the handle, the aperture in the bristle-carrying member having a plurality of recesses therein, and the pivot comprising a air of resilient lugs carried by the handle having parts spaced apart and compressible toward each other in the presence of two witnesses.
vto ermit portions thereof which engage LOUIS ADRIEN BD OCK. v v
